Waiting on Wednesday (19): Dystopias with Gorgeous Covers

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine.

Normally, I only feature one book in my WoW posts, but it's Dystopian August, so let's make things crazy! This week, I'm featuring the upcoming dystopias I am impatiently waiting to read because of the glorious covers. The synopses are interesting, but it's the covers that make these so completely tempting. Think how nice they would look on my shelves!

Gravity
The Taking, Book 1

Author: Melissa West
Expected Publication Date: October 16, 2012
Publisher: Entangled Publishing

Synopsis from Goodreads:

In the future, only one rule will matter: Don’t. Ever. Peek.

Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed--arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.

Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know--especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

The Summer Prince

Author: Alaya Dawn Johnson
Expected Publication Date: March 1, 2013
Publisher: Scholastic

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Four hundred years ago, the world ended. And now, on the coast of what was once called Brazil, women rule in the legendary pyramid city of Palmares Três. The city's Queen only cedes her power to a man once every five years -- to a Summer King, whose story will grip the city like a fever.

For June Costa, art is everything. Her brilliant creations -- from murals and holograms to a delicate pattern of lights in her skin -- have impressed (and irritated) her classmates and teachers alike. Her dream is to win the prestigious Queen's Award, and the instant fame and success that come with it. It's a dream she never questions -- until she meets Enki. Enki, the newly-elected Summer King, is the hottest thing in Palmares Três. But when June sees Enki, she sees more than piercing amber eyes and a lethal samba: She sees a fellow artist.

Together, June and Enki will create art that Palmares Três will never forget. They will add fuel to a growing rebellion against the government's strict limits on new tech. And June will fall deeply, tragically in love with Enki.

Because like all Summer Kings before him, Enki is destined to die.

Taken
Taken, Book 1

Author: Erin Bowman
Expected Publication Date: April 16, 2013
Publisher: HarperTeen

Synopsis from Goodreads:

There are no men in Claysoot. There are boys—but every one of them vanishes at midnight on his eighteenth birthday. The ground shakes, the wind howls, a blinding light descends...and he’s gone.

They call it the Heist.

Gray Weathersby’s eighteenth birthday is mere months away, and he’s prepared to meet his fate–until he finds a strange note from his mother and starts to question everything he’s been raised to accept: the Council leaders and their obvious secrets. The Heist itself. And what lies beyond the Wall that surrounds Claysoot–a structure that no one can cross and survive.

Climbing the Wall is suicide, but what comes after the Heist could be worse. Should he sit back and wait to be taken–or risk everything on the hope of the other side?

Note: Before you leave, remember that if you go fill out the form on this post, every comment on a post, including this one, during August will enter you to win one of 14 dystopian novels!

  3. OOO, there's a black girl! Not enough books featuring minorities.

    And Taken!
I need to figure out why they don't just tie and put him under 24-hour surveillance the boy up on his birthday.
And if there isn't any men, how do they get boys? Do they just marry really early...or have a sperm bank?

    1. Isn't she gorgeous?

Yeah, I don't know about those things. That's why I'm kind of unsure about the plot aspect, but the cover says READ IT NOW.

    2. *nod nod nod* even though I don't see her face. Her head can be severly deformed for all I know.

      I agree!
I hope they make the plot logical, but I'm liking the cover. Are they walking on the wall? O_O

    3. True, we don't know what's going on for sure. She could be a monster. No way of knowing. Well, her hair is gorgeous then.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. The cover is like colorful Inception.

  5. Yes, yes, and yes. I think I've featured all of this as my WoW pick at one point or another. Haha! And if not, they're definitely on my Wish List :-) I'll be on a Blog Tour for Gravity next month, I think, so I'm really looking forward to that.

    Great picks, chickadee! <3

I'm on the Gravity tour too. :)

  8. Beautiful covers for Gravity and The Summer Prince. Gravity, especially; I love blue covers. The Summer Prince sounds like the most promising to me. I went on the author's blog to find out if it's the first in a series or a stand-alone. It's not explicitly stated, so I remain in the dark. I really hope it's a stand-alone book. I like reading a book with a complete story, or at the very least, a completed plot line.

    1. I really like series, but I definitely see your point, and I've come to crave standalones, especially in dystopian fiction. It seems like a lot of authors are being talked into making their novel a series by the publisher, because trilogies are so hot right now. Why sell one book at 17.99, when you can sell 3?

Pet peeve: when a book appears to be a standalone, but then later turns out to be a series.

  9. This is very much not related but I have to comment on it because the Taken post reminded me. Have you seen the Dark Knight Rises? Because, apparently, no one at Warner Brothers knows how to spell "heist" or bothered to check. Bruce Wayne is reading up on Selina Kyle and his BAT-puter pulls up a newspaper clipping with a headline about a CAT-burglar pulling a HIEST. Wah-wah.

Should I be bothered that the title of the book is "Summer Prince" but the title used in the book is "Summer King"?

    1. I have not seen Dark Knight Rises, because I haven't been the HUGEST fan of them and going to the movies is expensive. BUT I recently saw a trailer for it and realized it has JGL and Anne Hathaway, so now I REALLY WANT TO SEE IT. Agh! Also, Hiest = hilarious.

I had not noticed that because I generally don't bother with summaries. That does worry me. Maybe this time she refuses to cede her power, so he just gets to be a prince? THIS BETTER BE EXPLAINED.
