Nice haul Christina ..enjoy!
ReplyDeletePERCYYYYYYYYY! :D No no, please keep showing me your cat. He makes me miss Tiger because they look a lot alike. I very much enjoyed you talking about him because I'm a crazier crazy cat lady.
ReplyDeleteIt sucks Penguin Teen didn't send you The 5th Wave like they said they would (I'm eighty percent sure you said they did the same thing with The Symptoms of My Insanity), but I'm glad you've got awesome friends willing to send you their copies of stuff in times like that. The 5th Wave was awesome, so I hope you enjoy it! Also, Bekka is the reason why I want Love in the Time of Global Warming now. It sounds AMAZING and I want to support diverse YA.
The cat I had before Percy, the cat of most of my childhood was an orange tabby named Tiger! This is what happens when your parents let you choose the cat name when you're 6. Haha.
DeleteThey did do the same thing with The Symptoms of My Insanity. Blergh. Anyway, I didn't end up loving that one, so it's less awkward this way. So excited for The 5th Wave and Love in the Time of Global Warming, even though Bekka and I don't always agree on books. *crosses fingers*
Your cat is adorable!! I am so not a cat person at all, but I enjoy seeing yours in your vlogs. I totally don't think your sounds ungrateful or complainy about not getting the books. I agree, it's fine if they don't send them, but it's rude to say that they will and then don't. I wouldn't know, I have never gotten anything from Penguin unless it was something I won. The 5th Wave is a book I am super looking forward to and can't wait until it comes out!! Great haul chick!!
ReplyDeleteI love cats. They're the best. And mine is ridiculous. Haha. I've worked with Penguin's adult group since early in my blogging career and they are wonderful. The teen group not as much, sadly.
Delete5th Wave sounds great, hope you enjoy.

OMG, Francesca Lia Block! You don't sound elitist--I actually grumble about super-long books that same way! I'm always scared to read FLB's new books though, b/c I haven't liked most of them as much as her earlier ones. Bekka liked it though, so that's a good sign!
ReplyDeleteSuper long ones? Why? It's the really short ones that bother me. Haha. Well, not liking them as much as the early ones might be a good thing for me. Maybe she's a bit more mainstream.
DeleteUnfortunately, I don't think she's more mainstream...I honestly think that some of her recent books feel like a rehash of earlier themes without the same intensity of emotion behind them. Although if you haven't read her earlier stuff, the repeated images and themes might not bother you as much!
DeleteI am an extremely slow reader and I want to read EVERYTHING, so I get impatient when I feel like the author is writing more than is necessary. If there's a reason for it to be that long, it's okay, although even then I'll get a little annoyed, like with The Mists of Avalon in high school. It took me an entire summer to read.
I also tend to like books that have really vivid, but short images and emotions and then sort of leave a lot for the reader to interpret on their own...but the more reviews I read, the more I realize that many readers see this as vague or underdeveloped. It's a weird balance. I don't know if sometimes I read more into certain texts than are really there, but on the other hand, if I think the author is being too heavy-handed and repetitive with emphasizing the themes and emotions, it will cause me to withdraw emotionally.
Hmmm, interesting. Well, I didn't feel any emotional intensity behind Weetzie Bat. It just felt like I'd taken some sort of drug unwillingly. Maybe it's a book that doesn't make sense if you've never been high. I don't know. Not that you have, but it's a theory I'm considering.
DeleteI want to read EVERYTHING too. I read fairly quickly, but it's still a losing battle. Oh man, I read The Mists of Avalon twice, because I DNFed halfway through twice before I stuck it out to the end when I had to read it for a course. The first half is great but then it's a hot mess.
I like some short books, but it needs to pack a real wallop. I also really don't go for books that make me feel like I'm on drugs. That doesn't interest me.
LOL! I'm actually terrified of getting high, so I never have...
DeleteI actually read Weetzie Bat AFTER I had read some of the other books in the Dangerous Angels series, which are about the same characters but IMO much better, so I probably was reading more into it because I already knew the characters. I just picked up one of her books randomly off a library shelf in middle school--it was Baby BeBop, the last book in the Dangerous Angels series and I think the best--read it in one sitting, sobbed, and then became obsessed with her.
That would be a mean professor to make you read Mists of Avalon for a course! I couldn't do it!
Nor have I. I'm not terrified so much as entirely disinterested. Doesn't seem like a great idea, though.
DeleteHmmm, I don't think I could ever pick up another Weetzie Bat book, but we'll see how this goes.
Well, I was in an Arthurian Lit course, so it wasn't that odd.
I love seeing your cat, especially that he lets you rub his furry belly. That's one of my favorite things to do, and not all cats will let you touch their tummies. Percy's gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI'm really happy I was able to help out! Feel free to check out my Goodreads shelves from ALA Midwinter and Annual and ask if there's anything that really interests you. I tend to give them away as I read them, so I tell my friends to check out those shelves (but they rarely ask to borrow/have any of them).
Happy reading!
Haha, yeah, my cat I had growing up would claw your face off if you touched his belly. Percy has no fucks to give. It's pretty great.
DeleteSweet. Noted.
Of course you are a crazy cat lady, Christina, but we love it! :) I had a huge smile on my face every time Percy jumped into that box. He is extremely cute.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't like first Francesca Lia Block book and gave up on her as an author, because that style was just too cutesy for me. Hope you enjoy this one and The 5th Wave. I also really want to read Replica, so will be looking forward to your review.
I am so not. How is it my fault he's the cutest kitty? I love watching him jump into boxes. My house has too many empty boxes sitting around because of how adorable he is.
DeleteWe'll see how it goes, though it doesn't come out until August so it will be a while.
Oh I REALLY hope you love Love in the Time of Global Warming. If not I'll feel like a total putz.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the penguin thing. They don't HAVE to send you books, but I guess if someone says they're going to do something, you expect them to follow through. It's pretty unprofessional if they don't.
Also, I love Percy's big fat belly. He's adorable. And the totally heartbreaking look at 1:16 - I can't take it.
Ha, no big deal, Bekka. I mean, obviously, I already know we don't agree on a lot of fiction. But hey, you wanted me to try another of her books, and I love LGBT fiction, so bring it on yo!
DeleteFor real. Why take the time to email me if you don't actually want to work with me? MAKES NO SENSE.
I love Percy's chubby belly too.
PERCY!!! He's totes an awesomecake cat because did you see that move at 3:17 because he was ALL UP IN that box, flying ninja move and all.
ReplyDeleteI loooove the cover of Love in the Time of Global Warming and ahhh, I'm kind of regretting NOT requesting it myself. Especially now. As you're talking about it. And I totally get you on that bit with publicists forgetting all about their requests and never sending a book. That's a truly sucky feeling 'cause you're all like WHY ME? I'm happy that you still got it somehow or other and i've heard good things about that one as well, so enjoy it bro!
Have a fabulous week, dearie!
My baby is awesomecake. He's not the best jumper, but he does it with flair. Haha.
DeleteThe cover is amazing. In the catalog, it didn't have a cover, and, if it had, I bet I would have been ALL over it. For real, why contact me to ignore me? Why not save yourself the trouble and just ignore me the whole time?
That's awesome that you were still able to get a copy of The 5th Wave... I'm super excited for that one, it sounds amazing. Hope you love it! Going to have to check Replica out... stand-alone?! So rare. lol
ReplyDeleteMy Showcase Sunday
Yeah, so thankful that Audrey passed hers on to me, because I was so sad.
DeleteApparently Replica might not be a standalone someone said. There's no info on GR, though, so I'm going to be pissed if it's a series!
LOL I love how he just looks up at you like, "Please let me the fuck goooooo!" <3
ReplyDeleteWOW! You got some awesome books this week! I agree with you about Penguin Teen. I wish I could get on with them, but yeah, I'd be pissed if they said they were going to send something and didn't.
I am dying to read the 5th Wave. I hope it's as good as everyone is saying. I was hoping I could get a hold of an ARC but it looks like I will have to wait until pub date. Incidentally, if you do decide to pass it on to someone else and it isn't claimed yet, I CALL DIBS. :D
Ha, yes, he's very good at the long-suffering expression. Whatever. He loves it. This is how I make him feel loved. If I suddenly stopped picking him up like that, I bet he would be sad.
DeleteUgh, there have been so many headaches. Seems like they pretty much just like to send things unsolicited.
Not sure whether I'll want to pass it along, but noted.
This is my first time watching one of your book hauls--how cute are you?! Your curly hair is gorgeous! And I love your cat! And I love the bookcase backdrop! I must stop writing in exclamation points!
ReplyDeleteI am super excited that you got a copy of The 5th Wave. It's one of my favorite books so far this year, so I look forward to hearing what you think of it. If your haul is going to be more modest, this one more than makes up for that. It's frustrating that you went through that with the publisher, btw, but I'm glad you ended up getting a copy after all. Hope you enjoy!
Wendy @ The Midnight Garden
Aw, thanks. Only in the last couple of years have I really come to terms with my curly hair. It was the bane of my existence in middle school and high school. I used to do the vlogs with a blank wall behind me, but finally had the brilliant idea of filming in my library.
DeleteI'm about fifty pages in and it's brilliant so far. I'm not making fast progress because I've got a review book pile of scary, but I'm loving it.
The 5th Wave. OMG OMG.
ReplyDeleteI HOPE YOU LOVE THE SHIZ OUT OF THAT.
Also, I am so far out of the loop, so IDK if you've finished yet. But yay.
I am not done yet. Haha. It's taking me a while, because the chapters are super short and I have a weird reading system. It's really good though!
