Cover Snark (17)

These really don't have anything to do with Dystopian August, but...well, I like doing them, so I'm posting them anyway as usual. Comments will count toward the giveaway, because WHY NOT. So, in case you get too depressed by all the death in the books, I give you humor, judgment and shiny things.

Beyond (Crossroads Saga #3) - Mary Ting
Thoughts: Well, I don't hate these covers, but I do think they're very strange. There's a definite connection between this one and book one, as both have a girl walking away in a white dress while butterflies flutter. Book two is different for reasons I don't know. What's so odd about these covers is the real model in a clearly created setting. Also, WTF angel wings in the sky. This is not how wings work y'all. And didn't I say just two weeks ago to STOP USING ANGEL WINGS ON COVERS. Why don't you people listen to me?!?!

Mountain Echoes (Walker Papers #8) - C. E. Murphy
Thoughts: She loves jeans. She really, really loves Jeans. For the first four books, she wore jeans ans a white tank, and now it's BACK. I mean, I totally appreciate the practicality of her outfit, but doesn't she ever want to look different. At least in 4-7, she got to wear other shirts. She just missed her tank top. I also think it's funny that she's usually busy doing something, but every 3 or 4 book covers, she needs a little rest.

Senshi (Katana #2) - Cole Gibsen
Thoughts: What the eff is that? Here's a hint about book covers: make sure the designer of book two has actually SEEN the cover for book one. Seriously, this looks like the cover for a Buffy comic or a Darren Shan book. I mean, obviously, they're going for the Buffy thing, but still. No. This looks ridiculous, especially when compared to book one. Oh, and make sure you don't miss the floating ninja eyes, because those are awesome. Apparently, Steven Seagal does book covers now.  Also, am I the only one who thinks the model a bit looks like a zombie?

Deadwood - Kell Andrews
Thoughts:  I love everything that's happening with the font here. Everything. Otherwise, I'm a bit unsure about the depiction of this tree's roots; I'm finding them vaguely reminiscent of Ursula's tentacles. Or of the tree in the animated movie of The Last Unicorn, which I won't link to, since it continues to haunt many a person who saw it as a child.

Cover Battle: Pandemonium (Delirium Trilogy #2) - Lauren Oliver
US vs UK: I don't love either of these covers. I think maybe the UK one is slightly better, although I personally think it looks like an awesome cover for a zombie novel. Much as we might compare the loveless folks to zombies, there's a difference. What I don't get is why it has nothing in common with the UK Delirium cover, which looks like this. Also, can we talk about that Delirium cover? Is it just me or is the model on it five? What is up with that cover? Ugh. It loses all of the cover battles.

Sidekick: The Misadventures of the New Scarlet Knight - Pab Sungenis
Thoughts: First, I would like to advise that Month9Books get their stuff up on Goodreads faster. I would like to link to them, but I had two last week and now this one that weren't up on GR yet. Now anyone who loves this cover and wants to read it will have to REMEMBER. Sigh. Now for the cover itself. Well, the model definitely doesn't look 30, so that's good. His head looks a little out of proportion with his body, and like it was cut and pasted on. Maybe he's going to use the sword to cut, then repaste a bit better? The cape also doesn't look legit; it's more like he took a curtain and shoved it in the neck of his t-shirt. I'm also bothered by how he's behind the buildings and yet some of them fade away into him. What is that?

Don't Tell - Mercy Amare
Thoughts: I really...have very little reaction to this cover. I'm not sure if people really dress like that, but, then again, it's the skirt I most question and I have one like that (though I've never worn it). I kind of like the pink staticky background, because it really pops, but I'm not sure about the font. It could be more interesting.

Colonization (Paradise Reclaimed) - Aubrie Dionne
Thoughts: This is one of the better indie covers I've seen. The fonts could be better, but I really think the flour in the dome is well done.

Options - Abbi Glines
Thoughts: Dude, you get to be on a book cover and you have gorgeous hair, so why so frowny? Do you hate walking down pretty forest paths? What's wrong with you?

Rua - Miranda Kavi
Thoughts: This is like Glitch but MORE. Pretty! Seriously, I am such a sucker for shinies. Anyway, I like the colors. No idea what's going on here, though.

Battle Lines (Department 19 #2) - Will Hill
Thoughts: These covers are imminently ridiculous, like, seriously, what is happening here. However, they do ridiculous with style. These covers are hilarious.

Things I Can't Forget - Miranda Kenneally
Thoughts: This is probably my least favorite of the three Kenneally covers, mostly because of the boring sandy foreground, but I love how her covers all work together. Also, that dress is super cute, although a really bad choice for a bike ride, since she's going to flash everyone if she's not careful, especially since her free hand is being used for hand, rather than skirt, holding. Both people are dressed to match their bikes.

The Mysterious Madam Morpho (Blud #1.5) - Delilah S. Dawson
Thoughts: The only other Dawson cover I saw had a shirtless dude that made me lol forever. This one, though, is lovely. I'm not sure about the texture of that character's skin, but, otherwise, LOVE.

OMG the dancing ninja on the cover Senshi. Fabulous.

I love the Deadwood cover. I was perusing the middle grade section of my library, and I've decided that the YA section gets the short end of the covers stick. Middle grade books are SO COOL.

I'm sorry but that cover for Sidekick had me gasping for breath. That is just terrible. Sure, he doesn't look 30 but he does look too old to be dressing in a curtain-cape. And what's with his head? Too much editing.

Colonization needs a new font. It would be lovely.

I kind of like everything about the Options cover except for the model.

I can all ready tell I want nothing to do with Things I Can't Forget (which does not include this boring cover - totally forgettable.) I love that you pointed out their matching bike colors and outfits.

I think I would like The Mysterious Madam Morpho cover more without the eye thing. I don't usually like crazy eyes on covers, because honestly, it just looks silly. With a normal eye, and possibly normal skin, I'd like it better because BUTTERFLIES.

Beyond:
Damn, those angel wings ae in the weirdest places on all the covers. Especially the first one. OOOO, A FLYING, ANGELIC COLUMN!! The path she's walking on also bothers me. A poor blend job...it looks like she is making all life die wherever she treads.

Mountain Echoes: Hey, being a protagonist is hard work, every so often you just need to sit in a tree and philosophize. I am jealous how she manages to be out in a forest and still keep her tank top so WHITE. *o*
She must have a tide pen with her.

Options: I think she is either 1) lost 2) her boyfriend refused to carry her 3) scared of getting mosquito bites.

I am so confused with the Battle Lines covers...did they take a helmet and put a ton of spikes around it? It reminds me of the zombie covers from the last cover snark post.

Rua: I thought it was pretty until I saw the red blotches/lumps on her hair (and one of her face). Ugh. Random red holes in your hair and face? Scary.

I always though Kenneally's books might be a series (even though the titles don't seem to imply it.) I saw Catching Jordan in the library but it looked too boring. I kinda wanted to read it since I have the Catching Jordan bookmark, making it a perfect match. However, I like this cover best. The bike ride just looks so sweet.

I LOVE COLONIZATION. Ah, so gorgeous. Probably one of the best indie covers I've ever seen. I'm okay with the authors name..but the title, I can't even read the second line.

Ack! I forgot to comment on Pademonium covers.
Now that you mention it the UK cover does look like something out of a zombie novel.

AHHHH!! DELRIUM's UK cover...I think it also might be the ebook cover too.
I was like "What's this ugly cover?" when I first saw it. I agree that the model looks five! I guess her eyes are supposed to sell the book?
OR they decided to use a less-than-gorgeous model to fit Lena's "plain" description? I don't know. I just know I want nothing to do with that cover.

I just think Sidekick is lame. At least make it look fun instead of looking so grumpy with a sword you bought in a costume store. And that poor guy is so pale. *sigh* I totally laughed at the curtain thing! I can just see him tripping over it. And the "halftone" effect..oh gosh. It doesn't work.
Maybe the guy is just sad that he was forced to pose with a plastic sword and wrapped in a curtain.
And he feels he can't fit into society because he is a giant. Life is hard when you are 10x taller than buildings.

Right? Senshi is so great. Or not. I scarcely noticed the dancing ninja, because I was so distracted by all of that other nonsense.

Deadwood was my second choice for best cover of the week. I almost went with it, but meh. Wasn't feeling it at this moment.

Sidekick is super hilarious. I have no desire to read that book.

Right? Colonization ALMOST made it to AWESOMESAUCE levels, which is super impressive.

That model is SO MAD.

I've heard great things about Kenneally, so I do want to read it, but, as I said, I wasn't especially impressed here.

I'm not usually an eye fan, but I think this one looks cool. The skin is freaky. Is it freaky to a purpose? I don't know.

Beyond: Until book 3, I totes did not get that those were angel wings. I thought they were a random floaty heart shape in the background and mostly ignored it. WHY ANGEL WINGS, WHY. Also, that positioning makes NO SENSE.

Mountain Echoes: Maybe she IS a tide pen. I actually am amused by those covers, and I don't begrudge her a lil' nappy nap.

Options: Hahaha, I'm guessing number 2.

Battle Lines: Yup, it's a helmety thing with a bunch of stakes coming out of it. I don't think they make any sense at all, but I think they work in absurd teen boy sort of way. I think they're intended to market to the same sort of audience as Zom-B.

Rua: I assumed those were part of her hairdo or something, like Christmas lights in her hair or something.

Kenneally: Haha, funny that you like this one best and I'm most bored by it. So far as I understand, they're not a series, but they are sort of companion novels? Like they have a similar feel? *shrugs* I'll be reading the first two later this year. Then I will know.

Yeah, I agree with Colonization. With some minor font changes, that would be the best indie cover!

Pandemonium: I'd never seen the Delirium UK cover and I seriously stared at it going 'the fuck is this.'

Sidekick: So lame. I do not begrudge the guy his weird facial expression, because I know I would not look pleased with my life if that was what my modeling career came to.

AAAA, Christina, your cover snark is way too cool for school! ;))) You had me at Steven Seagal :)
First, Mary Ting. I have nothing against her, and when she just had Crossroads with black background with white wings on the front, it was fine, but this covers remake is horrendous. Anyone with an eye for a colour could have told her that. There is no harmony in them.

Senshi is not tooo bad, actually. Katana was worse. However I'm still not convinced to pick up the series. Like her expression, but too much boobage.

Colonisation is lovely, but I thought Aubrie wrote for Entangled Publlishers? If it's still the case, their covers are seriously improving.

I love Delilah S. Dawson to bits, but I actually prefer the dude on previous cover (I have the book, yeah, yeah, I know ;) I like the eye, but the amount of butterflies on this cover is freaking me out.

Rua I actually like very much. Shiny!

The Crossroads cover used to JUST be those floating wings.

Here's a link to the orginal cover when my co-blogger and I reviewed it. Crossroads

Bahahaha, I forgot I did that. I am hilarious! lol. Glad someone found that!

Yeah, they're not the worst indies I've seen, but they're not very good at all.

Really? I like Katana better, although I don't like either. Mostly I hate that there's not consistency in the series covers. Her boobs do look weird.

Looks like Colonization is Inkspell Publishing, not Entangled. Mystery solved!

Haha! To each her own, right? I just can't take dudes on book covers seriously. Her first one makes me laugh for minutes every time I see it.

Hmmm...I can't decide which is better. Simplicity might be better than the color explosion. But those wings are seriously a mistake. WHY ARE THEY DISEMBODIED?

Okay, I was just scrolling through, minding my own business when the Don't Tell cover happened to me. I just sprayed Diet Coke everywhere! I don't know if it's because I'm delirious from sleep deprivation or there is just something really WRONG with me, but I feel like the model is drunk and just peed on herself. And she doesn't want us to tell. Or something else embarrassing that happens in bars. *chuckles* I can't even look at the others now.

Also, my five year old has the same tutu as the model.

OMG. *dies laughing*

*resurrects as zombie*

*dies laughing again*

I totally thought she looked wasted, but it didn't occur to me that she'd peed herself. I think you may be right. I've heard stories; apparently that does happen.

Oh dear.

The original US Delirium cover was much better! Really don't like the zombie UK version of Pandemonium.... But the worst cover award definitely goes to Senshi! I met the author at the RT booklover's convention, and she was so awesome! I remember being surprised that she was a girl because the name sounded like a boy name (Cole?). I wish she got more say in her sequel's cover!

I can tell you firsthand that she's also about to puke on her feet. The models on the cover below her are probably very nervous.

Pandemonium - I don't really like either cover, but I think the UK is a little better. I don't like the fact that the flower looks like a big ugly giant eating. It's only saving grace is that Requiem cover matches that one and I didn't order my Delirium copy until it's re-release so all my copies will match. (That other Delirium cover is the worst cover ever! She does look like she's five and I would not have ever bought that book)

Love your commentary on Options and Things I Can't forget!

Yeah, I really don't know how the UK Delirium cover passed muster with everyone who must have signed off on it. The story isn't about a girl that young...so WHY?

THANKS!
