Cover Snark (20)

Welcome to Cover Snark, where I share all the interesting cover reveals of the week that I can find, and we rip them apart with judgment or, slightly less often, praise them for their awesomeness. Get out your judgin' shoes and let me know your thoughts on the covers!

Oh, also, I do know this is the longest post ever. Do you like it or should I cut the size of the images to make it shorter? Thoughts?

Shattered Hourglass (Day by Day Armageddon, #3) - J. L. Bourne
Thoughts: These are some pretty fabulous zombie covers. I really like the colors and the tie-dyed look of the title font. I expect this series to be action-packed but also funny. Hope that's true!

Wicked Kiss (Nightwatchers, #2) - Michelle Rowen
Thoughts: MENACING POLKA-DOTTED SCARF! Has anyone ever seen the wind make a scarf fly like that? This is too much magenta. Just too much. What the eff is up with her dress/coat/thing? Is she a mermaid? I thought this was about angels. Her expression's also a bit weird. AND I am unclear as to why there is water in the background ABOVE the bridge. Confusing.

The Exiled Blade (The Assassini #3) - Jon Courtenay Grimwood
Thoughts:  This cover is GORGEOUS. It is also a trap. I read the first book in this series, back in my requesting everything from NG because I could days, and it was full of defecation and grossness. Do not be lured in by the pretty cover. His work appeals to some people, but read reviews before you add this to your shelves.

Right of Way - Lauren Barnholdt
Thoughts: Why are Barnholdt's covers always so boring. Of all of her books, I think I've only liked one cover. They're not bad, but...meh. The glaring sunshine through the old ass car really is not appealing. The coloring is also dull.

Conjure (The Hoodoo Apprentice #1) - Lea Nolan
Thoughts: Conjure wins most-marketed cover of the week. Good job. I wouldn't have included it here otherwise, because I really don't care about it. The font's kind of fun, especially the moon as the i's dot, but I'm still feeling the indie vibe.

Derailed - Alyssa Rose Ivy
Thoughts: BAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This is AWFUL. Seriously, who thought the blue and white striped shirt was a good idea with that background and the bright yellow for the title. The concept for this isn't great anyway, but holy crap no. Also, it looks like summer, but this chick appears to be freezing, based on how she's hugging herself. There's also something off about her expression, which really doesn't fit with the idyllic, greeting card style background.

Wings of Tavea (Wings of Arian #2) - Devri Walls
Thoughts: In the first cover, a young man stands in crotch deep water in a cave. On his left arm, he has a snake. On his right, a water floaty made of clouds or mist. Dude, may I suggest not getting in such deep water if you need a floaty? The second cover in the series introduces us to Floaty's girlfriend (or so I assume), She appears to be in a nicer, man-made cave with less water, although a giant wave seems to be heading her way. It's also evidently quite windy, since her hair and skirt (which may or may not be made of bubble wrap) are blowing to the left.

Tides - Betsy Cornwell
Thoughts: PARDON ME WHILE I DIE OF CUTENESS OVERLOAD. LOOK AT THE SEAL!!! I HAVE NOTHING CRITICAL TO OFFER, BECAUSE ZOMG CUTE SEAL.

Ever After (The Hollows #11) - Kim Harrison
Thoughts: I was definitely way too lazy to assemble ALL of the covers in this series. At a certain point, there are just too damn many. However, I had to comment on this because WHAT THE EFF IS SHE WEARING? At first glance, it looks like she's not wearing any pants, because she apparently thought a skin-tone pants suit was an awesome plan (Note: it's not). Also, color aside, this really just is not a flattering outfit on anyone, and really makes her look older than she is. Also, am I the only one that would love some more color variation on this cover?

Cover Battle: The Tale of the Vampire Bride (Vampire Bride #1) - Rhiannon Frater
Original vs. Redesign: I looked at this new cover and I thought Really, this is an improvement?!?! Then I looked at the book on Goodreas and determined that, yes, it is. There are no words for that original cover. It makes me laugh (especially the shadow)  and maybe cry a little.

Cover Battle: The Vengeance of the Vampire Bride (Vampire Bride #1) - Rhiannon Frater
Thoughts: This is, without a doubt, another improvement, although the bar was set low enough you could pretty much zombie shuffle over the damn thing. I do like how the kept the same themes (minus the floaty eyes of the original cover - good choice removing that) from the original but in new ways. The cover still looks indie though, especially the title font.

Cover Battle: The Mad Scientist's Daughter - Cassandra Rose Clarke
The Madman's Daughter vs. The Mad Scientist's Daughter: I can only imagine that these two books are mortal enemies, as they are both about daughter's of mad scientists. Not only that, but they're slated to come out within a month of one another. Odd that. I like the cover for The Mad Scientist's Daughter, but in the cover battle I have to go with The Madman's Daughter for the splash of color. I want to read both of these.

The Loop - Shandy Lawson
Thoughts: This goes on the great shelf of meh. Yet another designer who read about how black, white and red covers have a lot of visual appeal. There just isn't anything about this that especially calls to me.

Cover Battle: Cleopatra Ascending (Shadow's Edge #2) - Maureen Lipinski

Astarte's Wrath vs. Cleopatra Ascending: If you insist on using a stock photo for your book cover, at least make sure that you're that your version is better than the existing ones. The coloring alone make's Wolfe's version of this photo world's better; Cleopatra Ascending is likely tinted that way in an effort to make a white model look Egyptian. However, Lipinski's cover also suffers from the use of the transparent hovering symbol, which really looks like an ax about to chop into Cleo's head. Wah wah.

Spies and Prejudice - Talia Vance
Thoughts: Come on, guys, how about a bit more creativity, please! I'm not getting anything spy-ish, prejudiced (unless she hates rain - umbrella indoors...why?) or Jane Austen-y from this cover. More than anything it reminds me of Pretty Crooked's cover or Gossip Girl, since it seems to be about blonde hair and fashion. I am disappoint

The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women - Marie O'Regan, ed.
Thoughts: Successfully creepy. I keep trying to see under the sheet and not quite managing, which is distressing. Also, the tree definitely looks like it has arms.

Confederates Don't Wear Couture (Pilgrims #2) - Stephanie Kate Strohm
Thoughts: There really IS another one. UGH. PDWP is one of my most-loathed reads so far this year, so I'm not thrilled. Okay, I'll stop ranting and just talk about the cover. I don't think this one pops like the previous, largely because (much as I love blue) there's too much blue. I do like the bonnet and the dress (although it looks creased, right?). The picnic table cover background really isn't working for me, though.

Nexus - Ramez Naam
Thoughts: OM NAAM NAAM, PILLS. Sorry. Couldn't resist. Anyway, this reminds me heavily of this and this. I'm intrigued, but not blown away.

Cover Battle: Dreadnought (The Clockwork Century #3) - Cherie Priest
US vs. UK: Why did they bother? They appear to have decided that they didn't like the covers for books 3 and 4, but have kept the one for Boneshaker the same. Sigh. Apparently, they wanted closeups on faces for each. Personally, I like being able to see the creepy steampunk monster in the backgrouns and I love the original model's ginger curls.

Cover Battle: Ganymede (The Clockwork Century #4) - Cherie Priest
US vs UK: Were I to take the look of the series into account, I would go with the cover on the left for sure, but based solely on these I like the UK version. The monster on the Ganymede cover isn't anywhere near as cool as the one on Dreadnought. On the UK version, I get a boat and a dirigible. Plus, I love that this chick is wearing so damn many shot gun shells.

The Burning of Isobel Key - Jen McConnel
Thoughts: This is a great indie cover. I can still tell, but the model and background have been done better than usual. I like the vibrancy of the colors and the lighting. I want to go to England and Scotland and Ireland RIGHT NOW.

Flutter (Discover #1) - Melissa Andrea
Thoughts: Serious major props for there not being any butterflies on this cover! Yay! I think they're going for more of a dragon fly thing. I really like both the way the skin has been done and the title font. Very eye-catching.

Garden of Stones - Sophie Littlefield
Thoughts: Why does Sophie Littlefield keep writing books that I want to read? Seriously, I've read one of her books and didn't like it, tried another and DNFed, and yet I still want to read all of her books because the topics are so up my aisle. This one's about Japanese internment. The cover's a bit boring, but I like it more having looked up the subject.

Falling to Ash (Moth #1) - Karen Mahoney
Thoughts: I like that this looks a bit like an old painting, but it's not quite clicking with me. I think it's the pose that's getting to me. Also, we found the butterflies that weren't used on the Flutter cover.

The Elementals (Vespertine #3) - Saundra Mitchell
Thoughts: I don't know about you guys, but I really don't get a series feeling from these covers at all. This one's interesting in that it doesn't continue the pretty dress trend, though she still is walking away from a fan. Bonus points for the suspenders. Anyone notice her SHINY GOLD SHOES?

Uprising (Children of the Gods #2) - Jessica Therrien
Thoughts: A definite improvement over book one's cover (because I like the color), although I'm not sure why her hair is all up in her face.

Flukes - Nicole Chase
Thoughts: Congratulations are owed to the person that found the bikini that looks most like shells. However, they probably should have removed the little ties, because they are distracting. I like the bright colors.

V Is for Virgin - Kelly Oram
Thoughts: First thought: I like it. Second thought: Clever use of those stupid necklaces in case people can't remember their names. Third thought: WHAT THE EFF IS SHE DOING WITH HER HANDS?

When She Was Gone - Gwendolen Gross
Thoughts: Oh, come on, guys. Really? Ugh.

New Moon: The Graphic Novel, Volume 1 - Young Kim, Adapter
Thoughts: You're welcome. Is that supposed to be Jacob? Or? Seriously, I never pictured Jacob as that white. Whatever. This makes me so gleeful anyway. Just look at it! They really need to stop making shitty graphic novels out of YA books.

Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga #4) - Stephenie Meyer
Thoughts: Apparently two movies means two new movie tie-in covers. The one on the left is a trade paperback which will come out first, followed by the mass market on the right. That child is horrifying, which sounds about right. RPatz has a bit of derp face going.

Timeless (Transcend Time Saga #3) - Michelle Madow
Thoughts: Dear indie designers, please remember that simpler is better sometimes. I mean, her dress is awesome. Her hair could use work, sure, but the setting's not too bad. What is bad? That mask that she's flipping out about makes it look like she has a freaking mustache. HOTT.

Yay cover snark day!

Day by Day Armageddon is an awesome zombie series indeed, but I feel it's my zombie duty to inform you it's not actually funny. Soz. But still recommended!

Derailed is horrible - nothing matches!

Teehee @ the man with the floaty - what a wuss. Don't go in the cave then - duh!

And I thought the whole 'off with her head thing' belonged to Marie A - not Cleopatra - Fail!

Too many faces AGAIN - but the funniest one is definitely Timeless - bad bad placement!

Oh, and the Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories is most definitely creepy - I think I need to track that one down.

Awww, but the covers! They look like it SHOULD be funny. This is tragic news. Oh well. I still like zombie books.

Derailed is definitely one of the worst this week, which is saying something.

Bahaha, Mr. Floaty isn't very bright.

So much fail. Also, this book is apparently being published by Flux. I would have thought they were big enough to do better. WHOOPS.

What were they thinking with that? How did know one look at that and go, gee, she has a nice mustache?

Hahaha, you of course gravitate to the creepy ones. :)

Day By Day Armageddon: I like these covers a lot, especially the back-splash brushstrokes. They all go together very well. I do wish the zombies on Shattered Hourglass were in less stereotypical zombie poses. On the first two covers they are all the creepier for their functioning poses. I also kind of wish they were in the Thriller pose.

Wicked Kiss: If it were not monotone magenta (and minus the watermark), I'd love this cover. Her scarf is apparently trying to strangle her but I like the ruffle coat and it has a sort of Penelope feel to it that I like. I do not get any kind of angel vibe off it though. Which is maybe good because I don't know that I'd read a YA angels book. So, is this false advertising then?

The Exiled Blade: A shame because I am loving that cover.

Right of Way: I'm also curious as to why she's standing on the car that way. If there were a surfboard or a kayak on the car and she were in the process of getting it down, I think it would make more sense. As it is, it looks like she went up there to get her kayak and has just discovered she left it at home. Drat. Boring day at the beach.

Conjure: hahah! I like that she looking at her foot as though she cannot fathom why she is wearing high heels in the forest. I concur, lady, heels in the forest was a BAD choice.

Derailed: A fitting title for the cover. And the pouty lips? Not working.

Wings of Tavea: Is her hair CGI? Is she CGI? It looks very fabricated.

Tides: I love the colors on this one. For a moment, I thought the seal was a manatee.

Ever After: You know who loves a good pant suit? Hillary Clinton. Perhaps this is an accounting of Hillary's paranormal life before she married Bill?

Tale of the Vampire Bride: I get the impressing she was holding roses and they were taken out. Her fingertips are oddly posed.

Spies & Prejudice: Uhm, obviously she's wearing a trench coat, international sign of espionage and afternoon booty calls to your significant other's workplace.

Dreadnought: I love the artsy comic book style of the US version over the UK. Also, I will bet money the hands on the UK cover do NOT belong to that model.

V is For Virgin: Your third thought was my first. Also, I'm pretty sure the font on "Virgin" is from Gilligan's Island.

When She Was Gone: I know we had a name thing last week too but Gwendolen Gross? Unfortunate last name AND alliteration.

New Moon Graphic Novel: ....No.

Breaking Dawn: So, Bella is a vampire when she has Roseanne Roseannadanna or whatever-her-name-is, right? I haven't read them but I think that's part of it. Certainly by the time little vampette is of adolescent age, Bella is a vampire. So why, between these two covers, does she go from "still pretty much human" to "I AM NOW A VAMPIRE, SEE MY PALE AND HEAVILY CONTRASTED FEATURES"?

Timeless: Did someone sneak up behind her, untie her mask, and run away?

Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories and The Exiled Blade are my wins.

I am cracking up over the teeth on Shattered Hourglass. They're so white! Could have left that bit out and went with only glowing eyes instead, and maybe I'd be laughing less.

All the things are wrong with Wicked Kiss, starting with the title, and ending with the model's weirdly rubbery thumbs.

I agree with your assessment of Barnholdt's covers. I've never read her books, and maybe they're good, but I'm sleeping before I've even opened them. And if you look her up (which I just did) you'll see about 75% of her covers are KISSING. Awkwardly.

I definitely like the font on Conjure, but it's so clearly indie that it's not appealing. And IDK why but the title bothers me: The Hoodoo Apprentice.

Where the hell did that girls legs go on Tides? I am more critical of this cover because A) seals scare the shit out of me and B) I thought it was a manatee at first which had me rolling all over the place cracking up.

I am dying over the original Vampire Bride cover because she looks like Tori Spelling, and that is never a good look, not even for Tori Spelling.

I really, really like the Ghost Stories cover. I WANT it. Now.

The Confederates Don't Wear Couture cover bothers me a lot. I hate the background noise, I hate the title, and I hate that she's wearing taffeta.

Falling to Ash: I don't like butterflies or wings. I don't like her crimped hair falling in her face. I hate filigree and I hate brown.

Shattered Hourglass: Bahahaha, good point about the poses. They were a bit creepier when they were running in your general direction. Maybe they're saving Thriller for the conclusion or something?

Judging from the cover for book one, I think this is an angel book. Most of the reviews I saw made it seem like something I would not enjoy. I do agree that this one was almost right. It COULD have been awesome, but a bit TOO magenta. She's like Elpheba's magenta cousin.

Exiled Blade: I know. I almost want to read more because it's gorgeous, but I still remember just how gross that book was.

Hahaha. Damn! Forgot the kayak AGAIN! I assumed she climbed up there to get a better view. I suspect she's looking for the driver, who is obviously not present or he/she would be blocking the sun glare. WHERE ARE YOU DRIVER?

Conjure: Sandals and a ball gown seemed like a fantastic idea at the time. However, she is now realizing that perhaps now. The title font really looks like Disney. The C looks so much like the trademark Disney d to me.

Derailed: Not working AT ALL.

Wings of Tavea: I'm guessing it was a real model at some point, but has been Photoshopped to the point where it's questionable. The hair especially looks completely fake. Wind doesn't tend to blow hair so neatly.

Tides: A teeny, tiny, uber-cute manatee? I just want to hug it and love it forever.

Ever After: I would read the adventures of Hillary Clinton, paranormal demon killer. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.

Tale of the Vampire Bride: Or she's doing a shimmy.

Spies and Prejudice: Well, I guess it MUST be espionage, since she appears to have a shirt under there. You have a lucky husband, haha. ;)

Dreadnought: The hands do look a bit out of place, I agree. Slightly different in color and a bit large.

V Is for Virgin: GILLIGAN'S ISLAND! That makes her Mary Ann, then?

When She Was Gone: Yeah, I read one of her other books and liked it a lot, but it's not a great name. We have a Greg Gross at my office.

Breaking Dawn: Renesmee. Who will grow up in just a couple of years to slaughter her parents for naming her that. Good point. I have no clue. It may be that the covers were designed by different people who liked different lighting? Bella is never human when Renesmee is alive. And Renesmee is always a half-vampire or whatever.

Timeless: I guess. She's SO SURPRISED.

Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories was a bit too monochromatic for me. Exiled Blade is gorgeous, but I was in a cuteness mood.

The teeth are incredibly white. Maybe there will be product placement for white strips? I can see leaving them out, but they actually do creep me out quite a bit, so I don't know.

Wicked Kiss IS a pretty awful title. I did spend some time staring at her thumbs. Why not just put your whole hand in the pockets? You're not prepared for fighting and you're not keeping warm properly!

She has the one where the girl looks like a zombie and is doing an almost kiss with a guy, right? That one cracks me up! Cover designers must secretly hate her.

It's the Hoodoo. HOOOOOOODOOOOO. If it ever got Twilight or 50 Shades popular, it would spark a satire: THE DOODOO APPRENTICE. Just saying.

The girl is a selkie, I believe, and I think she's changing into a seal or part seal or something. I'm not entirely sure. You're scared of SEALS? WHY?

BAHAHA, Tori Spelling is a creature from nightmares.

Why am I the only one not completely in love with the Ghost Stories cover? I like it, but that's it.

You like the bags and boxes, though. Also, sweet bonnet.

So, in conclusion, Falling to Ash is your fav?

I do agree that the seal on the Tides cover is too cute!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE TIDES AND FLUTTER. Unless they're super, Cassie Clare-amazingly detailed awesome, then I prefer simple. Also, bright red: unless it is scifi, bright/anything-that-is-not-dark red does not seem to go well. It comes off as a bit... tacky to me.

vampire bride? the original covers look like Ariel in a bad Disney remake.

also, the manga of New Moon... no comment.

I thought you weren't going to like the first book. They all look the same. Never could read a book about zombies...

lol. The Scarf! Maybe she is a witch although the second book looks angely.

Too bad about The Exiled Blade. She looks awesome in her Little Red Riding Hood outfit.

Derailed- laughed like a loon after you wrote Bahahaha! This is AWFUL.

WOW! The Madman's Daughter looks Ah-Mah-Zing! So want to read it.

The Loop doesn't look that bad. I just rather more design on the cover than a big title.

Aww.. I like Pretty Crooked's cover. Granted I didn't know what it was about until I read the summary but still.

Ghost Stories gave me goosebumps. *shudder*

Pills... how original but it does intrigue me. The cover reminds me more of Brave New World. I love Girl Parts cover. Why does it remind you of that book?

Falling Ash looks good! Maybe re-position the hair on the face better.

Uprising- To show she has hair?

Flukes looks cool. I want her bikini.

V is for Virgin- "Clever use of those stupid necklaces in case people can't remember their names" nice. Her hands- she is posing like sometimes the awkward model girls do?

Fail on the last book called Timeless.

Do you consider that the outstanding cover of the week because of the seal? lol. I find it adorable that you think it is adorable (:

Actually, I tend to be a fan of series covers that have the same theme in different colors throughout. I also like the Unearthly covers. *shrug* I like colors!

Yeah, I'm really not completely sure what those books are about. Maybe angel dude in love with a witch? Could be for all I know.

Too bad!

Clearly the sense of the designers was derailed somewhere along the way.

I really want to read it too!

Agreed about The Loop. It's not that it's bad, but it seems a bit lazy and boring.

Because one of the little pill sections has a person on it, which made me think of that cover. A person in a box, I guess. Haha. Oh my brain.

HAIR IN HER FACE.

I guess, but if the hair is so important to you, why not just position her differently?

I would look so awful in that color of bikini. Haha.

What emotion is that pose supposed to indicate. I could understand a Home Alone face grab, but she's doing different things with each hand. WHY?

Yes. I like different covers for different reasons. I was in the mood for something cute this week. :P

And the ghost stories women book that was so creepy i can't even look at it again to get the title right? There may be nightmares tonight. I totally don't do ghosts. Eeekkk

Don't change your set-up. I like the big covers. Now on to my two cents. :-D I've said it before, but I really hate pastel book covers. Wicked Kiss makes me even less likely to read the series. I think the cover would have been more effective even in black and white.

I like the cover for The Exiled Blade, but I'm not tempted to read it. It looks like a tricksy historical wanna-be.

Right of Way's cover screams contemporary. Excuse me while I run like hell.

And what is up with the chick being so worried about her foot on the Conjured cover?

I love the Hollows series by Harrison, and Rachel is always dressed slutty on the cover. I mean, I hate the clothes, but I hate her face showing even more. Also, where is her freakin' red hair?! Oh yeah, the awful Frater covers stole it all. My apologies.

I like both covers about the children of mad people. They're simple and gorgeous. They both get to be my favorites, right? ;-)

Spies and Prejudice is using a still from a 1980s porn as a cover. I refuse to believe anything different.

Ghost Stories by Women has the cover down. Can we get a more creative title, maybe?

I thought Nexus's cover had sanitary napkins on it at first. The book is now ruined for me.

What is this, The Elementals? Is that a pretty girl in PANTS on you?! *dies from shock*

Okay, I love the Uprising cover. I have no idea why. Indie win, I guess!

And for the indie loser - Timeless. That cover is All Things That Are Awful. *shudders* The face and hair are just horrid, and it does not match the other two novels. I think pretty faces in masks can be effective. This cover - no. Just no. Burn it.

The only reason I ever might have read the series Wicked Kiss is in was because it was a 2012 debut, but there were so many better looking ones. I haven't had the best luck with angels. Mermaids and angels are totes the worst paranormal creatures.

Lol. You and contemporary. You are such enemies.

Don't know. Maybe she realized she forgot to paint her pinkie toe and it looks weird and she can't find her nail polish?

That is weird that they're showing her face and she's blonde now. Huh. I would have known that were I not SO LAZY.

Right? Those covers are crazy. Frater's covers always do weird things to my brain.

YES. They do. I like them both and want to read them both.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. OMG. YOU'RE SO RIGHT.

What kind of sanitary napkins are you using? O_o

Nope. We like our titles simple and straight forward round here.

Yeah, The Elementals totally DOES NOT MATCH. I mean, I like that she has pants, but I don't even know what to think about it as part of the series.

It's a great indie.

Yeah, I really don't like the other two either, but this one is just horrid, though I do kind of like her dress.

LOVE the amazing gothic-y cover on Mammoth Ghost Stories (these anthology series are the best!).

Also, Conjure is gorgeous! <3
My favorite of all, though The Exiled Blade is right up there :)
