Cover Snark (21)

Y'all, it was a bit of a slower week for covers, but I've got some awesome (and horrendous) ones gathered up for your viewing pleasure. Remember, this is a judgment-filled zone, so put on your snarky hat and get ready to decide which covers have merit.

As always, the wonderful Giselle of Xpresso Reads' facebook page was a source of covers I might not have found otherwise. Also, she rocks and you should check out her blog.

Clash (Crash #2) - Nicole Williams
Thoughts: I'm actually kind of digging these. At first, I was all why does this big dude have a tutu, but now I've noticed that she's with his shoes in the first cover. That's cute. I only wish it looked like the same tutu. They also don't look too indie. Nice work.

The Rules (Project Paper Doll #1) - Stacey Kade
Thoughts: I really dont' like this. The model's not doing anything for me, nor are the two different shaded eyes. This could have been cool, but it mostly just feels like fail. The title font looks like so many other cover fonts (think Altered) only less awesome. Oh well, the book still sounds awesome.

Chantress - Amy Butler Greenfield
Thoughts: For the most part, I really like this. The title font is super cool. I never get tired of the swirlies, plus the hot pink really pops. The tag line is better than most, although I totally thought it was the title as I was scrolling down the cover. I'm not sure what's in her hand, but whatever. What I don't like is the blurred pink face on the left. Sigh.

Naturals (The Lost Souls #2) - Tiffany Truitt
Thoughts: Eesh, really? This looks like a self-pub. The first cover was gorgeous. I don't know why this happened.

Fade to Black - Francis Knight
Thoughts: COOL. I don't know anything about this book, but I want it, because that's awesome. It has sort of a comic book feel to it, which I LOVE.

Winger - Andrew Smith
Thoughts: This goes in the category 'hard to look at.' Seriously, I looked at those stitches over his eye and started feeling woozy. Something tells me this book won't be for me. If I do read it, I need a hardback so that I can take the cover off.

 Vengeance Bound - Justina Ireland
Thoughts: Well, I'm intrigued by the building she's in, but I can't get past the GODDAMN SKINNY JEANS. I hate skinny jeans. This could have been more interesting. If it's Goddess Test meets Dexter, shouldn't she be in a pretty dress holding a blood-soaked knife? How could you miss a chance like that?

Gabriel Stone and the Divinity of Valta - Shannon Duffy
Thoughts: Each week, it seems like I include at least one wholly awful indie cover. This one wins for this week. That's like an arashitora, only all tiger. WHAT? I'd never seen any flying tigers until a few months ago and now they're a thing. This also reminds me a lot of the cover for The Unwanteds for some reason. Can't imagine why. Also, there are 80 bajillion fonts in the world and they went for that? Really? It's like a glowing neon marquee proclaiming that the book is indie. Still having trouble getting past the white tiger with wings that's apparently about to have a nice evening snack of monkey with armband.

The Caged Graves - Dianne Salarni
Thoughts: Yup. That grave is in a cage. Since it's historical fiction, I doubt this is to keep zombies from attacking, but that would be pretty cool. This cover is pretty, but not astoundingly so.

Cover Battle: Magic Bites (Magic Bites #1) - Ilona Andrews
Thoughts: I know I should like the original better because this one looks whitewashed, but this one just looks so much better done! I like the color scheme better. I like her hair in a braid. I like the shiny sword. Plus, the lion looks cooler. I do wish they'd kept the same model.

Slated - Teri Terry
UK/Aus vs. US: These are really similar, which is cool. I really like the terring effect on the UK cover. I'm going with the US cover, though, because I like getting to see the city AND because the city brings out the blue in the model's eyes. Also, I just tried to spell blue 'bloo' for some reason. What the eff is that? Am I Melvil Dui or something?

The Lost (Celestial Blues #2) - Vicki Pettersson
Thoughts: It is probably apparent by now that, though I may not read much paranormal romance or urban fantasy, I am really entertained by the covers. Sassy chicks in pretty clothes? Heck yes! Also, can I say how much I love the style on this cover. Inspired by Mad Men much? I want her outfit. Also, the guy in the suit looks much less lame than the guy on the first book, who kind of looks like a carny. Just saying.

Ashes & Ice - Rochelle Maya Callen
Thoughts: Nice work, indie. The eyes are a bit off, but, otherwise, I really approve. I especially love the title font. :)

The Twice Lost (Lost Voices #3) - Sarah Porter
Thoughts: Well, this is my favorite cover of the bunch by far. I'm seriously digging the mermaid on the bottom. Why does the one on the top look so fake though? Like why does one look like a model and the other look computer generated. Also, who swims like that? "Look, ma, no hands!"

Gilded Wings (The Angel Chronicles #2) - Amy Lignor
Thoughts: These are pretty great for indie covers. The angel wings are lame, but they're at least they blend into the background enough to not be super irritating to me. I do wonder, though, why they thought there should be a streetlight in the background. What does this really add to my cover-viewing experience? Also, does the model have an itchy sternum?

Blood Doll (The Vampire Agápe #3) - Georgia Cates
Thoughts: The Vampire Agápe? Really? Without the accent mark, it's the Vampire Agape, as though something really surprising just happened and the vampire is standing there with their chin on the floor? Given that people will probably mostly be too lazy to use the accent, this was a bad plan. That aside, I will say that Georgia Cates definitely has some of the best indie covers out there. This one's the best of the lot, I think, though the dress looks a bit homecoming queen or child-playing-dressup to me. Oh god. Jusy noticed the butterfly on her back. Sigh. There are too many butterflies on YA book covers.

Chosen at Nightfall (Shadow Falls #5) - C. C. Hunter
Thoughts: NGL, I think these covers are pretty. The background colors are just so gorgeous, with the exception of Taken at Dusk. Is she wearing the same dress in all of these? I think she is. Interesting. Anyway, I think this one and the first one were the best covers. My main complaint is that this model never seems to DO anything. She's just standing there. There's no sense of action in any of them.

The Rebels of New Sun (Blending Time #3) - Michael Kinch
Thoughts: Oh, what a boy cover. I'm amused by how much it looks like a kid playing soldier. Part of that is due to the fact that he's wearing sandals with his camo. I mean, I LOVE my flip flops, but, were the world to end, I'm pretty sure I would pass them up for sneakers. The cover looks really fake, but I'm okay with it, since it's clearly a stylistic choice. I do really like the shiny title.

Summerset Abbey - T. J. Brown
Thoughts: Oh, those magic words: "reminiscent of Downton Abbey." This cover's kind of lame. Is that just me? I mean, she owns this huge estate and can't afford to buy a dress that fits? Her fancy gold dress is straight up dragging on the ground by INCHES.

Outstanding Cover of the Week: Fade to Black - Francis Knight

19 is slow?? O_O

Before I go back to reading about typography and typing a Biology essay I just have to say this:
If you can't stand Winger's cover, blindfold yourself in I Love You, Beth Cooper. It's like the same thing but 1000 times worse, and being illustrated doesn't help. Plus the guy is a loser.
This Winger guy looks more like a jock than a loser. I have some issues with how hard the title is to read against such a light background though.

I do like the cover for Clash sitting next to the first book. But alone, it's just scary. I do agree that it doesn't look indie - I had no idea. They were really well done, but like I said, the second one sitting there alone is weird.

The Rules isn't the most offensive weird eye cover out there, but the model's mouth is weird. I also don't like the font: it's been way over used.

My only problem with Chantress (and covers like it) is that it looks EXACTLY like the Wicked Lovely books. It's depressing that people are getting paid bucketloads of cash to create covers, but they produce copy-cat images.

I LOOOOVE that Fade to Black cover! It looks very super-hero-ey and comic booky. I just love it. I hope it lives up to its cover.

I freaking love the Winger cover too. I love the colors and the font, and of course the beaten-down model. I have no idea what it's about but I want it. At first I was grossed out, but the colors on his uniform and of course the bloody tissue all really pop.

I don't really have a lot to say about Vengeance Bound except zzzzzzzzzzz.

I hate everything about the Gabriel Stone cover. First of all - I thought we've progressed as a race passed WORD ART. STOP. Second, I hate the flying tiger-thing and his creepy facial expression. Who needs their claws out when the fly? No one. It will only slow you down. I don't trust the beckoning monkey leading these children deeper into this wilderness. And is that kid wearing a Google Chrome shirt?

The Caged Graves' title and cover are a waste of awesome resources. I'm sad about the lack of zombies, and if it's truly not a zombie novel, the cover is booooring.

I don't like either Magic Bites cover because I have a fundamental opposition to shadow faces on covers, even if they are feline.

I don't particularly care for either Slated cover but I'll go with US only because of the colors. I mean I can see a city from my house, I know what a city looks like lol. Also, you spelled it "Bloo" because of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Yup.

I really love the clothes on The Lost but I could live without the wings.

I like Ashes & Ice. Another great indie cover. I probably wouldn't have guessed it was indie if you hadn't said anything. The only thing I don't like is the tear.

I can't remember the name of the mermaid on the cover for The Twice Lost, but she was the leader of their tribe in the first book, before she got usurped. All the mermaids were colorful and different looking, but as the queen, she took the cake for it. I'm excited they showed her though, I love her colors.

I hate everything about Gilded Wings. I hate the super-glossy finish. They tried to make it look all rugged, but it just looks silly. And dirty.

If I never see a butterfly on a cover again it will be too soon.

I love the Born at Midnight covers. They're a guilty pleasure for me because technically, I know they are boring. I don't really know what the hell they were thinking with Whispers at Moonrise, but as a whole I do like the series. Now to find time to read them. Humph.

Oh god, what a terrible cover, Rebels of the New Sun. That's just awful. It looks sort of like a simulation video game.

To be fair towards Summerset Abbey it does look like that is a train on her dress just pushed towards the front, sort of like she was facing the house but turned around for the picture. These things happen. But I am bored to death by this cover.

Also: whooo I commented on ALL the covers this week.

I like Fade to Black... it's very edgy and mysterious. Also 'Clash.' Some part of me wondered if the guy was about to change into the tutu. Probably getting the wrong image there... but I like it. I DON'T like the flying tiger. I would have liked the Vampire Agape (agape *snickers*) but the butterfly. They're very overused in my opinion. I also like the covers with the girl standing. It's a "safe" pose; it's easy to mess up someone running or fighting on a cover, I guess. But the cover with wings... I like big wings. Big wings are beautiful. What the hell are those black-plasticky-looking things doing?

Also, what's 'Indie?' I is confused :P

I love cover snarking~

You found quite a few covers I've never seen before. I'm particularly excited for Vengeance Bound and Fade To Black which have both been added to my wishlist.

Glad to see you liked the cover for Chantress. I thought it was stunning and reminds me of the Wicked Lovely covers a little.

I'm also really loving the cover for The Lost. Like you mentioned, I don't read a lot of paranormal but I'm a sucker for a pretty period dress.

So excited for The Rules, but I'm not surprised the cover is lacking, I didn't think too much of the Ghost and Goth covers either.

I doubt I would read Winger, but if I did it would be an ebook. Cover weirds me out.

The dress that the girl is wearing in Sommerset Abbey not only is way to long, I don't feel like it fits the time period of Downton Abbey. Now maybe the book isn't the same time period, but that's what they imply by puting Abbey in the title.

I agree. Fade to Black is an amazing cover. I added that book to my tbr this week even before I read the synopsis. Covers like that just really do it for me.

I love when you do these cover snark posts. Please don't ever stop doing them. I agree with you on the worst indie cover as well. How corny. And it does look like The Unwanteds.

Chantress looks like she's about ready to stab a hearty she's holding in her hand and as for the font i think they look more like veins coming off the letters than swirls. Hmm. And as for Natural, couldn't they have found a natural redhead? Lame. We're out there people!! I agree though Fade To Black kicks butt.

* Wow, Clash doesn't look indie at all to me. I actually kind of dig it, even though it's probably contemporary and all. ;-)
* Okay, I'm going to ask this right now - what is up with this 80s shit that is going on now? The Rules looks like another 80s movie still, but at least it's not porn. Publishers, stop it now. It's not appealing. Stop. *stares* Stop.
* I like Chantress, despite my hatred of pastels and pretty things. I think I may buy this one as shelf candy. (It's only fair that I do that as mean as I am about other covers.)
* I took part in the cover reveal for Naturals. It doesn't bother me really except that my hair won't be that color anymore. >.<
* Fade to Black gives me vertigo. I'm buying it to face out at the library. And at home. Hell, I may even read it. I like super heroes. :-D
* Winger doesn't bother me. It's most likely not my kind of book, but the cover doesn't make me uncomfortable. I wonder if he'd let me give him a free punch to the face?
* Vengeance Bound is going to become dated soooo fast. Publishers should KNOW BETTER.
* I think someone should take the idea of cages on graves and make a freakin' awesome zombie novel. That picture should be INSPIRING writer folks.
* There should be more white on book covers, like with Magic Bites. It can be well done, and when it is, it really stands out.
* The girl on the cover of Slated is a vampire. That is all.
* If I had the figure of the girl on The Lost, I would dress like that every day. I would even let a hot zoot suit dude creep in the shadows behind me.

The others are boring. But look! I'm not a week late! :-D

NICE WORK.

Okay, I see what you mean about Clash alone. I think it's because it looks like he murdered the ballerina. Right? Could that be it?

The Rules is a bunch of interesting (albeit overused) elements put together in the worst way possible.

Actually, I didn't think of the Wicked Lovely books at all. They're so much better looking. I guess I see it in the darkness and the girl, but this totally is not in the same ballpark imo.

Yeah, I added Fade to Black for the cover alone. I'm really not sure what it's about, but I don't care. Haha. Hope it's awesome!

Were I able to look at the Winger cover, I might like it more. Haha.

Whoever designed Vengeance Bound made a poor choice with all that white and then a boring model. It does induce zzzzs.

Bahahaha, I don't think it's Google Chrome. I'm pretty sure he's wearing an amulet of some sort. You can see the necklace strings. WORD ART REVOLUTION.

Nope. No zombies. It's historical fiction.

Shadow faces are not my favorite cover element. In fact, they're one of my least favorite elements. Still, I like the colors and at least on the new one the lion kind of blends into the background.

What is Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends?

Oh man, I didn't notice the wings. RUINED. THIS COVER IS RUINED. I was too distracted by the obnoxious cherry tattoo.

I'm still more bothered by her unnatural eyes and the way the eye makeup is done, but the tear is lame too.

Surprisingly, I do actually remember the character you're talking about from Lost Voices, which I read and did not like. Oh well. The bottom mermaid is awesome. If they'd just ended it there or put a cool fish at the top for her to look at, this would be so pretty.

Meh. My standards are lower for indie. Plus, props for having a dude on the cover and not having it look any more ridiculous than the girl on book one's cover.

I hate butterflies on covers, even though I enjoy butterflies.

Yup. Same. They're not brilliant covers, but they're pretty and meh! I haven't read any yet either, but I do plan on it.

It's better than the cover for the second book in the series. I think they're trying to appeal to gamer boys probably.

Also, if she spun around to face the cameraman, WHY DID SHE THEN TURN AWAY AGAIN. GRRRRR.

You did comment on all of the covers!

August 31, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Blogger Christina said...

What's even worse is that the Agape Vampires have a butterfly on the series info too.

Yeah, the wings on Gilded Wings and Until Next Time are awful, but they are at least sort of hard to see until you know they're there. They look ridic though.

Indie just is a way of categorizing the books that either self-published or from a really tiny press. They don't have as much money for covers, so they tend to be less good.

True. Those covers weren't great either, but they were trying to be sort of funny at least. I can't take the cover for The Rules seriously, and I think I'm supposed to.

Seriously weirds me out.

The dress does look a bit too glossy to me as well. Perhaps. I really don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if this book was written solely to attract a flock of Downton fans.

Hahahah, Like The Net or something. Lol. Your job is to find ALL of the 80s movies.

Oh, you and your hatred of pretty things.

Despite my love of covers, I don't take part in cover reveals anymore. I just do this. Cover reveals were too awkward. Besides, I figure it only gets you more traffic if it's an exclusive reveal. Meh.

I can see how it would give one Vertigo.

Got some rage to work out with face-punching?

I loathe that Vengeance Bound cover.

*makes note* Maybe I will write that book. Except I don't think I've got the stomach to write a zombie book. We need to give this to The Aussie Zombie and get her to run with it.

She does look rather like vampire. I think it's how it looks like her mouth is full of darkness. Blood perhaps?

Woo! I would dress like that everyday too. WHY DO I NOT HAVE THAT FIGURE OR WARDROBE?

Oh boy some of the covers here.. haha! I actually like the Naturals cover though. I think Chosen Ones was perhaps better, but I like the brightness of book two. That's just me though. :)

Ohhh! I love C.C. Hunter's covers! I've only read Born at Midnight (adored that book), but haven't got around to picking up the rest of the series yet. I need to. I enjoyed it...and the covers just make me want to rush to them also.
The U.S. Slated cover is great. I like it better than the U.K. cover also. I think I'll put that on my TBR list now. Along with Fade to Black.

They look all messed up and so uncomfortable for her...like at the top...Not good. Any way, I also love the Chantress cover. I wonder if the publisher used the same artist that designed the Wicked Lovely series because it so reminds me of that. And Fade to Black does look pretty epic.

I'm seriously considering adding a separate cover rating to my reviews that doesn't affect the book rating. (That's not fair to the author.) I also have a new idea for a cover meme that I may try to put together in the coming weeks. :-D

Clash deserves high praise - it is a fantastic cover, indie or no.

I will personally make the 80s covers stop. It is my mission, and I choose to accept it.

Worst thing ever - PRETTY CONTEMPORARY COVERS! *giggles*

You do have a point, but it's a free post for lazy people like me. Also, I'm back on The Facebook Beast now, and some of my friends are interested in that sort of thing. A few people aren't aware that I'm not the only book blogger alive (shhhh), so they can be all impressed by me.

I have a crippling fear of heights. I can only tolerate high places if I'm holding a camera.

Maybe, but that dude would let me.

I think even a new outfit could make Vengeance Bound more effective.

I am working on a vampire book, so I don't want to swarm my brain with zombies too. Paranormal creature overkill seldom works.

It's the bloody mouth, pale skin, and weird eyes. She is going to eat you.

I'm not a pink or magenta person (prettiness), but if I had a killer figure and dark hair I'd wear it. :-D

So far behind on my commenting! I am ashamed.

Clash: I had to stop and check if that was a girl or not. Also, I thought the ballet slippers were a gun holster. Do you see what dystopian August has done to me?!

Chantress: It's a stone right? Because it kind of looks like a human heart. I want her cape, though.

Naturals: I love her hair! If that cracked dirt background were a verdant lawn this would be a Herbal Essences Naturals ad.

Gabriel Stone & the Divinity of Valta: HAHAHAHAAHA!!!

The Caged Graves: So pretty! I love that once upon a time, when humanity was genuinely concerned about vampirism, this was something we did. Part of me wants to have my grave surrounded by a cage, just for the kicks. I also want one of those bells attached to my finger in case I'm accidentally buried alive.

Magic Bites: The lion makes me think this is a really hard-edged fan fiction of the Chronicles of Narnia. Pardon me while I go write that into existence.

The Rebels of New Sun: Pretty sure this guy is a member of S.Q.U.A.T., ala Geek & Sundry's "Written By A Kid" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef2wnLL1s00&feature=player_embedded

Clash: Pretty sure that's not a girl. Or it's a VERY muscular lady. NOT a gun. Haha. You should imagine what my brain is like now!

Chantress: I think you know someone who can make you that cape. I think it is a stone. A yicky one.

Naturals: It DOES look like an herbal essences ad! One that was filmed in the setting for those Aveeno commercials.

The Caged Graves: I agree. It would be awesome to have a cage over my grave, though, actually, I don't plan to HAVE a grave. Instead, I shall live forever. Actually, I will be cremated.

Magic Bites: Right? I think it looks like that too. Instead of being lame, Lucy now wields SWORDS.

Rebels of New Sun: I will need to check that out later.
