Square One - Coldplay

A Million Suns
Across the Universe, Book 2

Author: Beth Revis
Pages: 386
Publisher: Razorbill
Source: Won from Saundra Mitchell

Description from Goodreads:
Godspeed was once fueled by lies. Now it is ruled by chaos. It’s been three months. In that time, Amy has learned to hide who she is. Elder is trying to be the leader he’s always wanted to be. But as the ship gets more and more out of control, only one thing is certain: They have to get off the ship.

Prior Book: Across the Universe

First Sentence: "This isn't going to be easy,' I mutter, staring at the solid metal door that leads to the Engine Room on the Shipper Level of Godspeed."

Review:
Before I talk about the book itself, which is pretty awesome, can I talk about how much I hate the whole 'ship fueled by lies' business? That is such an absurd way to describe Godspeed. Actually, if they could figure out how to use lies as fuel, Godspeed really wouldn't be having any troubles, because they'd be moving a long at a nice clip. Oh well, that was Across the Universe. Apparently, now the ship is 'ruled by chaos.' That's a definite step up, phrase-wise.

Speaking of steps up, I liked A Million Suns better than its predecessor. I know lots of people will judge me when I say this, but I was bored through the first half of Across the Universe. For a while there, it came close to being a DNF. I put it down for a while, came back to it, and then enjoyed it. With A Million Suns, there was no boredom. I was totally caught up in the book from the beginning to the end. I thought this one had much more consistent action and less of Amy whining about the, admittedly unfortunate, situation in which she has found herself. Don't you just love when a series doesn't peak with book one?

In fact, now that Amy is somewhat resigned to her fate here on Godspeed, I found her a much stronger, more likable character. She's still grumpier than the average heroine, but is down to a level that I can stand reading about. It helps, too, that she has a purpose now, in the form of a mystery to solve. Of course, it also helps that the other characters are more interesting now too, since they're off of Phydus. There's more life in this book.

While I'm talking about Amy, I also want to discuss the romance between Elder and Amy. I was expecting it to be cheesy and awful, because that's one of the aspects I barely remember about the first book. Thankfully, though, Amy actually has the kind of attitude towards romance that I always hope to see from YA books. To get the gist, see my favorite quote at the bottom. Also, I totally loved that, though the romance was here, it was not at all the main focus. The most important thing was saving the ship and its people in whatever way necessary.

At the end of Across the Universe, power-hungry Eldest died and insane Orion was frozen. Now Eldest (Elder in the last book has now taken over the title, though I will call him Elder for the rest of the review for clarity's sake) is leading Godspeed. However, his youth, inexperience and kindness all run against him. So, too, does his desire to keep the ship off of Phydus. Without it, people have minds and opinions, and they're extra pissed off because they now know what was happening to them for generations. Elder helped them by removing it, but he's also the representative for why they were turned into brainless sheep. Some are mad because they were ever drugged, others are mad because they want Phydus back, but they're all mad.

Elder wants to focus on the important thing: fixing the ship and finishing the mission. The Shippers (those responsible for ship maintenance) tell him they can't fix the engine, because they're too busy keeping the ship in working order otherwise. This was one of the things that didn't make sense. The Shippers don't have time to work on the engine, yet, when Elder decides he needs a police force to help get the population under control, they volunteer. I thought they were busy? Shouldn't he choose people who don't need to be, you know, making sure the bits of metal keeping you from death in space don't FALL APART.

Elder tries really hard, poor dear. He does. Honestly, though, I'm kind of on the side of the people considering revolution. He has his heart and intentions in the right place, but I don't feel like he really knows what he's doing. Then again, Elder has never been my favorite hero. He's a bit stodgy most of the time; it's hard to fathom how he was such good friends with Harley and the rest.

I really loved the plot line with Orion and the clues he left behind for Amy. Having a task made Amy more fun. He hid a bunch of clues in literary references, so that was awesome. Plus, I got to see a different side of him than I ever had before. The problem here is that this Orion seems fairly stable. I mean, a little bit crazy, but he sure seems incredibly smart and as though he has plans. Elder would never have figured all of that stuff out on his own. Maybe it's because I read the first book two years ago, but I felt like it wouldn't be that bad if Orion were to be the leader of the ship. Yes, he killed people, but Eldest drugged them and he didn't really get hatred for that.

In all honesty, I don't know why these books are not more popular. This series ought to have the fandom that Divergent has: they're accessible, but much better written and plotted. I am super stoked about Shades of Earth in a few months, guys! I feel like it might be EVEN BETTER.

Favorite Quote:
"'Just because we're the only two teenagers on this whole ship doesn't mean I have to love you. Why can't I have a choice? Options?'
   Elder steps back, stung.
'Look, it's not that I don't like you,' I say quickly, reaching for him. He jerks away. 'It's just . . .'
'Just what?' he growls.   Just what if I was back on Earth instead of on this damn ship, if I had met Elder at school or at a club or on a blind date, if I had my choice between Elder and every other boy in the world . . . Would I love him then?
   Would he love me?
Love without choice isn't love at all.
'Just that I don't want to be with you just because there's no one else.'"

"You're in control, is there anywhere you wanna go?
You're in control, is there anything you wanna know?
The future's for discovering
The space in which we're traveling

Your review gave me hope about starting this series. I've just heard many...not so glowing reviews for it that deterred me from reading it, despite the very lovely covers. I am disappointed that they redesigned the covers because I was so looking forward to what gorgeousness they would've came up with.

"At the end of Across the Universe, power-hungry Eldest died and insane Orion was frozen. Now Eldest is leading Godspeed."
What? A ghost is leading? *confused moment*

"I thought they were busy? Shouldn't he choose people who don't need to be, you know, making sure the bits of metal keeping you from death in space don't FALL APART."
Bwahahahaha. I sense some shenanigans going on from those workers...being a police officer is much more fun than fixing an engine (bonus points if doughnuts are involved).

OOOOO! THERE'S A PUZZLE/MYSTERY??! *o*
is it just wishful thinking, or does it sound like Ready Player One? *o*

From your favorite quote, I am liking Amy's attitude. Though I can see that making her a bitch who wants "more options." I don't quite agree with her. Perhaps it's just that I have a romantic view of love, that it doesn't just change because you are in the presence of more hot guys.

Oh this series sounds so good! I've heard amazing things about it and even bought the first book a few months ago and haven't gotten around to it. I'm glad the sequel is great, too, as too often it's just a filler book that kind of hits its mark. Great review, chickie!

Yeah, this was so refreshing, in that it WASN'T just filler so they could market the books as a trilogy. Woohoo! The atmosphere was a little different from book one, from what I remember, but still very good.

Right? It's like cover redesigns come when they have no idea how to design a cover equaling the awesomeness of what they already devised. SIGH.

I don't RAVE over these books, but they're solid and good. They have their issues, but they're well worth reading. I would have more respect for humanity if this had the fandom instead of Divergent.

Yeah, it is confusing. Eldest is a title, so when Eldest the power-hungry died, his successor, Elder the love interest of Amy became Eldest. Maybe I'll try to fix it, but looking at that sentence it kinda seems worse. Urgh. TRIED.

When I read that scene I was seriously like LOL WHUT IS THIS. Because it's not like he asks if they can fix the engine and they say they have no time, and then months later they volunteer to ALSO be the police force. It's minutes later. MINUTES. What happened to all of your business? Is it a cover for the fact that you have no clue how to fix the engine? I DON'T KNOW.

YUM. Doughnuts probably aren't involved since one of the issues making people mad is food shortages, because once they're off the mind-numbing drug, no one wants to do any frexing work.

Definitely not a mystery of Ready Player One levels, because these kids aren't nearly that smart and they don't have that much pop culture in space.

I like Amy's attitude. Her point isn't that she would want the other hot guys, and actually Elder isn't described as being especially attractive. Basically, Amy wants to know how she feels for real, and she has no one to compare Elder to, because he's her only option. She doesn't want to settle. She does like him, but she doesn't want to slap love on it, when the feelings could be borne of necessity.

I liked the first one better, despite all the whiny whining. But, I definitely feel like book 1 was more of an intro book. Book 2 definitely was not filler. And Book 3, based off that ending, at least has to be super interesting! I definitely agree that the main character has gotten a lot better!

Divergent had great marketing. And so did Insurgent. *winces at the thought of the deluge of Insurgent faction blog posts filling my email subscriptions for that entire month* I GET IT, INSURGENT IS COMING OUT! LEAVE MY INBOX ALONE, AND GO BACK TO PROPER BOOK BLOGGING PROGRAMMING. It made me frustrated at several book blogs that wouldn't stop plugging Insurgent.

When I first read Eldest, I thought of dragon. Then I thought of a very old guy that might be a wizard. And then Elder sounded like a middle age guy with greying hair. But then I realized Elder was a teen, and not a very smart one. oops.

NO DOUGHNUTS? Ok, I don't see why they would volunteer for more work anymore.

Yeah, I'm super excited for Shades of Earth now, because they're going to be some CRAZY stuff going down in that one for sure!

What did you like better about book one?

August 9, 2012 at 9:17 AM

See, I wouldn't call the Insurgent campaign great marketing. From what I here, all of the bloggers they chose weren't necessarily Divergent fans; some hadn't even read it. When so many people are like ZOMG MUST HAVE INSURGENT, why not choose them? Also, they weren't asked, so I know some were like 'hell to the no' am I doing this when it arrived, or at least Stacked was. Plus, I was more pissed off by all the fanfare than encouraged. Just like the shitstorm that was the Clockwork Princess cover reveal finally convinced me to quit Cassandra Clare. Getting the word out is good; cramming the word down everyone's throats is BAD.

Hold on now. Elder's not stupid, but he's not brilliant like the kid in Ready Player One. I mean, heck, I'm not as smart as the kid in Ready Player One. That's a HIGH BAR. Elder's fairly smart, but he lacks some basic life understanding because he was raised by Eldest and had limited social options, since the bulk of the people were on drugs.

Right? Makes no sense.

Sorry.

I think it's a sign I am not that into social media because I missed the whole Clockwork Princess campaign. Or maybe it's because I left for a trip to Hong Kong in the summer.

I actually haven't read Clare yet. I have City of Bones on my dresser (because I need to be a hipster and read it before the movie). And because the copy is from the library, it looks like it's been to hell and back. *stares and yellow pages and creased cover* ugh.

I secretly hoping they wouldn't reach 35k? Insurgent preorders so that the extra short story wouldn't be released...just to see if they would release it anyway. I didn't want them to think their book blog flood was actually working. If nobody tweeted for Clockwork Princess...that would make me laugh. *Evil moment*

I don't know about you, but I'm Asian so of course I'm high bar brilliant!

The cover reveal was seriously obnoxious. They wouldn't reveal the full cover until people tweeted about it like 7000 times. UGH. I watch cover reveal tweets, and they just exploded. My feed too. It was the worst.

Good luck with that. I think you'll bring out your red pen and judge the hell out of it, like any good professor.

Right? That would have been so funny. FOUR HAS NOT BEEN FREED! But he was. And now people are probably paying 2.99 or whatever for a 30 page novella. The whole novella thing really makes me sick to my stomach. It's like authors realized they could make money off of the scenes that weren't quite good enough to put in the actual book. I mean, some of them are good, but I've read a couple that were POINTLESS. Obviously, they're not crucial to the plot, so it's just an extra scene they can charge money for. Blergh.

I have a sad lack of Asian. Damn my white ancestors who only married other white ancestors.

Damn, and to think of those people who tweeted it 7000 times being pawns in their obnoxious campaign. EWWWWW. I want to see these stupid, obnoxious campaigns backfire. Granted, it was a pretty cover.

oh no. *opens window in preparation* *flexes fingers*

"FOUR HAS NOT BEEN FREED!"
*giggles in delight* I guess the good thing about it is it's less-than-great rating on Amazon. And the "most helpful" review thought the novella was a marketing trick (I fully agree of course), I hope that will deter people from buying it.
Amazon reviews are hilarious, here's a title of a 1-star review: "i would have rathered use my dollar at the dollar stor buying junk"
Made me laugh despite the poor spelling.

I hope the people who felt cheated knew they could refund.

I guess white people can only eat so many char siu buns and sushi until they get fed up and go back to steaks and burgers...
But seriously, why are American food portions in restaurants SO GIGANTIC. Even a big mac, that thing is stacked so high I don't know how to stuff it in my mouth. My dad once said that's why Americans have such big mouths. His words not mine.

Right? I want everyone to be like, no thanks, how about you just show us the damn cover already? I just don't see how it adds anything positive to the experience. It's not like all those people wouldn't have tweeted about the cover's release! Why make them tweet about nothing first?

Wah wah. That's so funny. It really blows my mind how obsessive people are about Divergent.

Oh snap. I bet they didn't. How long do you have to refund? Do you know? I feel like if I could game the system. Buy the kindle, read it, refund it. If I liked it, I would then buy the physical book, because ebooks feel fake to me. Everyone wins in the long run!

Bahaha. I have trouble eating giant sandwiches. I actually don't like hamburgers. So there's that. The portions are crazy, unless you buy gourmet food, and then it's like three bites, for 8 times the cost. I will NEVER UNDERSTAND.

I think it's a desperate attempt to get on Twitter's trending list (which I actually don't pay attention to since I use Hootsuite most of the time.)

Ditto on the obsessive. I was chatting with a stranger on Omegle about Divergent, and she went batshit crazy on me when I said I didn't really like Tris, nor did I care for their romance. She ended up disconnecting me. hmph.

The refund policy states that you have up to 7 days to refund an ebook.
I actually thought about cheating the system (since I am sure you can save the ebook on your desktop), but perhaps if you do it too often they will know you are abusing the system. Maybe...once a year? *sneaky grin*

I found out about the refund because I accidentally bought an ebook with the one-click system and I panicked for a minute before I Googled "how to refund amazon ebook." I was relieved I didn't have to call customer support. It was a book that the author said was going to be free from a certain date, and I forgot time zone differences. Thank god I was able to refund it, wait a day to download a free copy. Yes, I am cheap.

It's mind-boggling how many stacks of hamburger patties they manage to squish in two buns. O_O And that is why I can only eat off McDonald's dollar menu. Those are the only burgers that can fit in my mouth.
Gourmet food...*drools* I watch food shows often and I end up drooling. Apparently the chefs/food critics don't even eat more than one bite even if they like the dish. Those lucky people...

I use Tweetdeck, so I also don't see the trending list. I also really don't get why you would want to trend. Once something's trending, the spambots go WILD with that hashtag. No thanks. I actually pretty much only like hashtags when they're something very few people would ever make into a hashtag. #notwhathashtagsarefor

Bahaha. I really don't know how you do that chatting with strangers thing.

Probably more than that, although I'm sure they'd notice that I only buy the ebooks to refund them. Sigh. There are some books I can't get my hands on any other way (without buying a print copy, which I don't like to do if I don't know I'm going to like it). I wish my library had ALL OF THE THINGS. I think they might have a lending library for ebooks in the Prime thing. I would be tempted to join at some point if that's the case.

Dude, I would do the same thing. I actually did the same thing once. It was in the free lists, but wasn't anymore and I was like AHHHHHHHHHH!! Give me my 3 dollars back, you jerks!

Gourmet food is stupid to me. Certainly we don't need the portions you get most places, but I'm not going to pay SUBSTANTIALLY MORE money for less food.

Well, I think the relationship is done pretty well. I LIKE that Amy is logical about it and doesn't immediately proclaim her love to the skies...er space. They're not a swoony romance for the most part, but I think it's refreshing and more realistic this way.

Chatting with strangers are fun! except when the other person is antisocial..or when they don't know how to react to my literacy or unique brand of sarcasm/humor...or the rare occasion that I'm told I sound like a bore (HOW DARE HE! HE WAS THE ANTISOCIAL ONE. I AM NOT BORING! RAWWWRRRR *flips a table*)
But sometimes you can find intelligent people (it works better if you filter by interests).

I tried talking about books with strangers, but the conversation inevitably gets reallllyyy awkward if the other person doesn't read the same genres as I, or we disagree on something (like that Divergent girl.) *sigh* I haven't figured out a way to talk to strangers about books...TT_TT There was this one guy who was all anti-female writers.

I WISH MY LIBRARY HAD ALL THE THINGS TOO.
They should just make a national library of ebooks.
I was looking up library services one day and apparently you could ask them to ship a book from another library system for like twenty bucks...

Did you get your refund?

I would love to be a gourmet cook. MONNNEEEYYYY!!!

Hmmmm, that's...not convincing, but you enjoy yourself. I have enough trouble being social as it is. I AM THE ANTISOCIAL ONE. *hides under table*

Wait, HE HATES FEMALE WRITERS. *beats guy to death with table* That can be a danger with books, that people might also love to read but hate all the things you love and vice versa. lol.

Right? ILL is only two dollars here, but, honestly, two bucks so that I can read it once? I might as well buy the damn thing.

Oh yeah. Well, actually, I had the wrong card on file, so I just didn't correct it, but there was initial panic. Woo!

I hate cooking. Takes TOO MUCH TIME. (Says someone who spends all of her time reading.)

NEVER FEAR! YOU CAN ALWAYS USE THE HANDY DANDY MEGAPHONE TO TRANSFORM YOURSELF TO BE SUPER FRIENDLY AND SOCIAL! I AM SURE EVERYONE WOULD BE PLEASED WITH YOUR ENTHUSIASM! LALALALALA

YES, HE HATES FEMALES WRITERS (he said he especially didn't like Austen, I have a feeling not JK Rowling either--which amkes me think what's wrong with him??). Apparently he believes females only write towards a female audience. Which I can't completely disagree with either when I think of Bronte and Austen. I've also come to the conclusion, that guys generally don't know how to write romance well, with the exception of Nicholas Sparks...yep, that's the only male romance writer I can think of.

But I wanted to beat him with Ayn Rand, Margaret Atwood, and Toni Morrison. I think female writers need to use pseudonyms (or initials) so people don't judge their work by their gender.

"that people might also love to read but hate all the things you love and vice versa. lol."
NO! IF THEY DON'T LIKE WHAT I LIKE, THEN THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM! But yes, I completely understand. The conversation immediately gets awkward. Very rarely I find a YA reader, but usually they get REALLY defensive with their fandoms...especially their couple worshipping. I was chatting with a girl about Maze Runner and I just wanted to be like "WHY DON'T YOU SEE THAT THIS MAKES NO LOGICAL SENSE??"
*calms down* Each to their own.

It gets amusing when the conversation shifts to favorite books and the other party gives me a classic (which I suspect out of pretentious reasons). If I feel like the guy is acting pretentious by giving me a classic, I often shoot them down.
Like this one guy who said his favorite book was Lrods of the Rig. Or some other atrocious spelling. Yet he didn't know what Middle Earth or Mordor was. *facepalm* DUDE, WHAT BOOK DID YOU READ? AND HOW CAN IT BE YOUR FAVORITE BOOK IF YOU SPELL IT WRONG?

I never saw a purpose in ILL...20bucks??? This is what I get for being in Hawaii where anything that gets shipping costs are OMG-EXPENSIVE.
Thank god Hawaii's state public library system spans all it's 50 branches on all islands, and requesting is free inter-state.

Which reminds me, I went to Hong Kong in the summer. And my cousin was telling me how she thought this guy working at the library was cute..so she would request books to find an excuse to talk to the guy (but the guy was one of those antisocial types). And each time she requests a book, she had to pay a fee. I think she racked up quite a few fees--enough to get my auntie mad at her for wasting money.

GUESS WHO JUST GOT GILLIAN FLYNN'S GONE GIRL IN THE MAIL!!? *points to self* happy happy happy~

READY!

You think Nicholas Sparks writes romance well? Because I don't... There are undoubtedly plenty of males that write good romance, though I would need to dig through my list of books to give you a list. That guy is a punk.

Like A.S. King. I bet he would have liked her stuff if you gave him Everybody Sees the Ants or Dust of a 1000 Dogs. He'd be like 'This dude is great.' And you'd be all 'this dude's actually a lady MWAHAHAHAHAHA.' Or, you know, something.

Oh goodness, people and their fandoms. Like the Divergent folks or Cassie Clare. I'm like you people need to chill. Also, The Maze Runner doesn't make any sense, but it does make the most sense out of the books in the trilogy, even though we should have learned more later. WAH WAH.

Well, maybe if the title was hard to spell or difficult to remember. We read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for a class in college and the prof COULD NOT remember what it was called. She came up with a new name every time. I suspect that by the end it was a gag. But yeah, Lord of the Rings shouldn't be that hard to spell. And how can you not know Mordor or Middle Earth. They even made fairly accurate movies about them and those terms are DEFINITELY in there. Liar, liar, pants on fire!

Yeah, if they charged 20 bucks to get a book from another branch, your book buying would skyrocket. Amazon would be your only savior. Actually, you'd probably have to go ebook. Sad day. Good thing you at least have everything the good state of Hawaii purchases. Does your library have a book request form?

OH MY GOD, that is the BEST. She paid to flirt ineffectively. WOW. I hope she at least read the books so it wasn't a total waste!

Woo! I don't know anything about that book, but all of a sudden it's everywhere!

I wouldn't know if Sparks writes romances well, because I haven't read his work (I have a copy of The Wedding on my shelf though). BUT EVERYONE SEEMS TO LOVE HIM TO BITS AND THEY HAVE A GAZILLION MOVIES WITH HIS BOOKS, SO IT MUST MEAN SOMETHING RIGHT? EVERYONE KNOWS THAT STUFF THAT EVERYONE LIKES THE MOVIE OF SHOULD BE BACKED UP BY GOOD WRITING! RIGHT?? *O*

If that guy reacted like that to the stigma of gender. I have a feeling he wouldn't react well to the stigma of YA. *sigh*

"Lord of the Rings shouldn't be that hard to spell. And how can you not know Mordor or Middle Earth. They even made fairly accurate movies about them and those terms are DEFINITELY in there."
DITTO! I mean Mordoreven became a meme! And then I called him out on it, being the evil person I am. And he said he hasn't read the book in many, many years. Well, I don't see how you haven't read your favorite book in several years and totally forget where the whole thing was set. Like reading Harry Potter and forgetting Hogwarts.

"Amazon would be your only savior. Actually, you'd probably have to go ebook. Sad day"
IT WOULDDD...but if that was the case, I would just drive to that library or something. I WANT MY BOOOOKKKK! Most branches (including the main branch) are on my island anyway. Or depend on Goodwill...or my local branches' library sales (50cents for paperbacks and a dollar for harcovers..not bad, not bad at all!) There was this one time I wanted to buy City of Bones, but I didn't have fifty cents change and didn't feel like breaking up my ten dollar bill, so I decided to buy it later...BUY SOMEONE ELSE BOUGHT IT. I better hate City of Bones, or I will feel bad.

Or I will go to the ebook black market that is the Internet. *evil grin*

Book request form? Like the form you fill out for them to purchase new books?
Because I swear they do, but they just don't tell people about it. When I was a kid, I filled out the forms for every new Mary-Kate and Ashley book. So much that the librarians noticed and gave me a GIGANTIC Mary-Kate and Ashley poster that they probably got from the publisher. HAPPY DAY!

Or do you mean the form for just requesting a book from another branch?
because all that is digital, and thank God...FREE!

Well, she requested for these children's craft books since she's a tutor. Apparently, she could bill the school for it. I hope she actually did, but something tells me she was too lazy (or felt bad) to do so.

Oh, well, it depends on your perspective. I don't find doomed romance romantic. He writes about people who fall in love and then one of them dies in an accident or of a disease. Tearjerkers are so not my style.

Probably not, but there must be someone similar in adult fiction, although I can't think of one off the top of my head.

Right? I mean, come on. There's a movie and people talk about LOTR all the time, at least awesome people do. Even if you forgot the name, you should recognize it and be like OH YEAH.

Are you on the biggest island? I don't remember which names go with which islands, since I've only been once when I was like 13.

I buy most of my books at Goodwill. Or from Amazon if I have to buy someone else a present. One for them, three for me. lalalala. I'M NOT SELFISH. WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT?

Odds are pretty good that you'll hate City of Bones, or, like me, at least hate yourself for enjoying it.

Right. It's a good thing I don't care about ebooks or that would be a SERIOUS temptation. My issue is that I don't buy physical books (except at a serious discount) unless I know for sure that I'll like them and want to reread, so I'm not going to buy ebooks just because I want to read the book. I often read things I thought would be awesome but were in fact the WORST. At least with a physical book, I feel like I got something for the money; ebooks don't feel real to me.

Hahaha, I was OBSESSED with Mary-Kate and Ashley when I was in elementary school all the way up until it became embarrassing. The drug habits finally saved me (theirs not mine, because I don't have one). I remember when I had a chance to buy a VHS of Billboard Dad and I passed it by and then it was gone! My young self thought that was the worst decision I'd ever made. I still remember how distraught I was. I saw like five minutes of it on TV years and years later and thought it was terrible. Young me had the worst taste.

I meant the one to get them to purchase things they don't have.

Embarrassed for her.

OMG, I loved this book! I agree that it's better than the first one, which was really predictable for me (I still liked it, though). But this one went so above and beyond that I was really shocked and impressed. It's hard for the sequel to live up to the original, let alone surpass it!

Right? It's always so incredibly impressive to me when the author can build and improve as the series goes along. There's a lot of disappointing sequels these days as standalones or duos get forced into the trilogy format. This one really was worlds better! AND I think that Shades of Earth should just be even more epic.

Nope, but I'm on the most populated island: Oahu. It's where the capital is.

"Tearjerkers are so not my style."
And you watch KDrama? *stares*

"I was OBSESSED with Mary-Kate and Ashley when I was in elementary school all the way up until it became embarrassing."
Ditto. I also had a girl-crush on Hilary Duff in third grade...
I don't know what "saved" me, I guess Hilary just left Disney and I thought Hannah Montana was lame. Then I moved on to my manga obession...then my Kpop/Jpop obsession...I have all these phases.

"It's a good thing I don't care about ebooks or that would be a SERIOUS temptation."
I didn't want to wait for Sophie Kinsella's I've Got Your Number so I actually downloaded the galley that leaked online. I suspect it was the Netgallery version. I didn't even have a kindle then, so I read the entire thing off my laptop. I did it with Divergent too because I had to return it to the library, so I downloaded a ebook I found online to finish the last few chapters. *whistles*

"I meant the one to get them to purchase things they don't have."
I should go and ask for a stack of them like I shamelessly did when I was like nine (to request all those Mary-Kate and Ashley books). Ah, being older does things to me. I feel kind of bad now like "WHY AREN'T YOU BUYING YO BOOKS, LILIAN?" or "Do you realize you have a towering pile of books on your dresser?"

They should just put those forms (actually it's these tiny yellow cards) out so people don't need to ask for them. I know if it was online I wouldn't feel bad and I know like ten books I would love to ask for on top of my head: Throne of Glass, Stormdancer, Postmortal, etc. etc. I even know all the authors and release dates...and publishers. I guess that's what happens when your email is stuffed with book blog subscriptions everyday.

"Embarrassed for her."
Hey, you also have to give her props for being that brave. Though may dropping a request form with her phone number would probably be much more effective.

Damn you, assumptions! I've been to your island! (Yes, it is now YOUR island. You're welcome.)

Welllll, I like the endings to be happy. I can deal with craziness along the way. Plus, I refuse to watch kdramas that center on romances where one of them has cancer or something similar.

Oh man, I was SO OBSESSED with Lizzie Maguire in like sophomore year of high school (embarrassingly old, I know). We'd just gotten cable finally, so it was my first chance to watch Disney, so I went through a phase of watching all of their stuff and all of the movies I could. Speaking of, I really want to watch some of those again to see if they're still awesome. Probably not.

I've done that a couple times with library books. Like I had this legitimately, but I'm going on a trip with my Kindle and I need reading materialssssssss! I don't do anything with them after. I don't even keep them. *shrugs*

Yeah, I really need to conquer my review pile. I'm considering stopping with NG almost entirely and then just taking whatever physical copies come my way. The digital request pile is too insane. Besides, I worry what all of the reading off my comp will do to my eyes.

Yeah, ours are online. I don't do it much though, because they don't tell you whether or not they're actually going to order the book. Also, you have to look up the ISBN and stuff and explain why and it's lame. BECAUSE I WANT IT. WHY ELSE?

Right? If he's socially awkward enough, he wouldn't know that's what she was going for. Maybe he just thought she REALLY liked crafting books.

WHOO HOO! I have an island now! And I didn't even need to take it over like a benevolent dictator!
Everyone who visits should have been on my island, you couldn't really go to neighboring island without stopping over first...unless you ave a private jet.

I usually avoid those too, but sometimes THEY DON'T TELL YOU. But I remember watching this KDrama called 49Days, which seemed all sweet and okay...and then the last episode. RAWRRRR! *flips a table* Most frustrating ending ever. I was happily plodding along the story and then it felt like I was hit with a truck in the last episode. I can just feel the producers snickering and being all like "You thought you knew what was going to happen didn't cha? NOPE!"
While I want to strangle them.

I still think Lizzie McQuire was okay, because it didn't try to make you laugh with stupid things. I still think The Amanda Show is AWESOME, it was one of those shows that were actually funny.
Now I watch Disney/Nick and I'm like "oh gosh, I'm not a high school anymore which means I'm supposed to be older than these people!"

Ive only requested two books off Netgalley then I thought it wasn't for me (mostly because the formatting is hideous.) And I also requested one from Edeilweiss? (I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL THIS WORD! ARGHH.) because I was abroad and I was on tour for it. The formatting was still disgusting, and my Kindle kept jumping chapters. Wasn't pleasant.

"because they don't tell you whether or not they're actually going to order the book."
Oh, they don't tell me either here, if they do purchase it, they just request it for me automatically.
But I think I did get every book I wanted, because Mary-Kate and Ashley had popular books...I think. I ate their So Little Time ad Two of a Kind series up like candy. Though I'd like to think the librarians just liked me.

Haha, you should put something like "because if I don't read this book I won't be able to cure cancer." or "to save the world from illiteracy and stupidity."

Or maybe he'd think she was just stupid for not being able to fill out a simple form. XD

WHY DON'T I HAVE A PRIVATE JET? *puts on bucket list*

*makes mental note to approach 49 Days with caution* *shudders* Kdramas always have an episode where everything goes wonky for a while. I much prefer for that to happen in the beginning or the middle, not to END THAT WAY.

I don't watch Disney anymore, because I don't have cable. Even though during my youth I thought my parents were monsters for not having cable. BUT IT'S SO GODDAMN EXPENSIVE.

This is why I read NG stuff on my computer. The epub files are WAY better. The Kindle files are a hot mess just about every time. They may do it on purpose because they can't make the Kindle ones expire.

Ooooh, that's nice. I'm pretty sure my library doesn't. In fact, I know they don't.

YES. STEALING THE SECOND ONE.

Bahahahaha. 'Lady, you don't need to leave your phone number...you're supposed to write the title and author of the book!'

WHY WOULD YOU WANT A PRIVATE JET?
You'd have to learn to fly the thing! AND GAS IS SO EXPENSIVE! Unles you can make it powered on air. And is that a hint that you want to avoid my island when flying to Hawaii...or you want to avoid me? NOOOOO!!!

The sad thing was that it was all awesome until the ending. The writers were probably all like "You thought you avoided that didn't you? NOT SO FAST!!!! Muhahahaha"
There was this one Hong Kong drama that had a less-than-desirable, cliffhanger-ish ending and so many people complained that they filmed an alternate ending.

"This is why I read NG stuff on my computer. The epub files are WAY better."
I don't know how you stare at the screen so long!! Or maybe you should get a nook..or any of the other ereaders that support Epub (seriously, WHY U NO SUPPORT EPUB, KINDLE?! ARE YOU BEING HIPSTER?). I wonder if the expiration can be bypassed through converting the file...

"YES. STEALING THE SECOND ONE."
OKAY! I PROMISE NOT TO SUE YOU IF YOU TELL ME HOW IT GOES.
Either the librarian will appreciate your good humor, or she'll get pissed off and ban your account.

Oh that scene would be perfect for a chick-lit! Or a rom-com.
If only I worked as those creators that dished out ideas of writers, if there is such a thing.

I don't know either. I'm just used to it by now, I think. Problem is I already have a Kindle. Why drop MORE MONEY? ARGH. Maybe someone will give me one.

Yes it can. Ahem. I know nothing.

SURELY THEY WILL LOVE ME.

Seriously, why won't people pay me to give them ideas?

I wish I had tv channels, but cable's absurdly expensive! I watch on Hulu/Netflix.

BECAUSE FLYING YOUR OWN JET WOULD BE BADASS. And pilots can be sketchy and get drunk, be too sleepy, or just want to fly into a building as part of a terrorist plot. REALLY? The drinks is all that's attracting people here? I thought it was the gaudy keychains. OR Obama bobbleheads.

I don't like the mainland dramas (my grandfather loves those ancient war/strategy dramas though where everybody looks like a hobo and too many people die), not the Taiwanese ones since they are OMG-SO-EXAGERATED. I did love Fated to Love You, but that's my limit. I couldn't even bear watching Skip Beat!

I actually kinda want the Nook Glowlight. Because I am too lazy to turn on lamps. I won my Kindle, let's see if I can win a Nook!..actually I could've chosen between a Kindle or a Nook, but Kindle won out with its affiliation to Amazon (those free books!...that I don't even read).

THAT GOES WITHOUT SAYING.

Ah, the Internet is a wonderful place for TV.

The only mainland or Taiwanese ones I might try are the ones that are based on manga I love. There's a Taiwanese adaptation of Cat Street and I'm going to have to watch it. Also, where are mainland dramas made? The fact that they're not referred to as a specific country confuses me. KOREANS ARE THE HOTTEST.

I wish I hadn't gotten the older gen kindle, pre-touch even. It's really not that great. Ugh, but I bought it, so I can't justify buying another device until it dies.

WHAT? A Taiwanese adaptation?? I barely lasted through the Japanese adaptation (the main guy was HOT though!)

Where are mainland dramas made? Ummm...I guess any place in China (Taiwan and Hong Kong don't want to be lumped with mainland China) that isn't living in poverty? Mostly because we know that foreigners don't give a damn which province stuff is filmed. Though I wish I could say mainland dramas are made in top-secret underground film sets. I just know mainland china dramas cost less to produce, and many Hong Kong actors expand their careers by being in mainland dramas.

I like any Asian guy in a suit.

"I don't know why they don't just call them Chinese dramas"
I think it's because Hong Kong and Taiwan don't want to be associated with Mainland China. And the dialect of Chinese is different. Cantonese is my first language and I'm fluent (I was born in Hong Kong), but my Mandarin (what they usually speak in Mainland China) comprehension is seriously depressing. And Taiwanese dramas usually speak Mandarin, though they do have their own Taiwanese dialect too.
I guess only Chinese people care for the distinction.

I think Korean actors/actresses are just there to try to break into the Chinese market (all those people, it's bound to be a lucrative business.) And it doesn't work well, their Chinese makes me want to hide in a hole.

I would recommend something...but I've only watched like one or two in my lifetime. One is my grandfather's favorite about ancient war strategy...and the other is this fantasy/martial arts thing. And I think they had a high budget for both. They really splurged on special effects.
But I haven't watched a modern day drama, so I have nothing to say.

Um. Nope. Taiwan is it's island thingy (like Japan, but smaller) and Hong Kong used to be part of China, then the British took it over for 99 years. And then independence was restores in 1997, and Hong Kong became it's own "country." And though they are connected to China in that you could ride a train up to China, it's not "China." And Hong Kong has it's island too.

Um. And there are no countries in China. China is a country, with all it's many provinces. I think the entertainment industry is centralized in its cities, so they don't really "each do their own thing."
Like the US, you wouldn't say each state is doing their own thing....right?

Ok, just stick with your Kdramas! China does have some awesome movies though. They did a live-action Mulan a few years back, and I cried. They make way better movies (especially ancient ones with badass fighting and pretty dresses, I love ancient Asian costumes *o*) than dramas.

I have that problem with Filipino! It's like "oh, IT'S ENGLISH!!"
NOW YOU'RE MAKING ME SELF CONSCIOUS ABOUT MY ENGLISH! AM I AS GOOD AS I THINK I AM?!?!? NOOOOO!

Really? It's the makeup that has you concerned? O_O
What are you watching? Chinese Opera? Because that stuff takes makeup to a whole new level. My grandfather loves that stuff. I once read an English translation, and the stuff they sing in Chinese opera is DEPRESSING. They sing about eloping and then drinking nuptial wine...then joining each other in death. Or committing suicide so that they can be together in death. When I first found out I was like "My grandfather likes this stuff?!?!"

I love lighting scented candles!

ACK! No,nononononono. I know Taiwan is it's own island! I mean that the different provinces of China with the different languages were still all China. Hong Kong, though, I was legit unsure about. Mostly, I guess that's because it sounds confusing.

Why you no understand me? I understand mainland to mean non-island countries of South East Asia. Thus, Korea is also on the Mainland. Vietnam. You see? Mainland does not = China, in and of itself.

LIVE-ACTION MULAN. THIS IS HAPPENING. Cool. I am down with movie reccs.

Couldn't tell you. Do a vlog for your next book haul post. Then we will all know.

Well, I was thinking more of the Korean historical dramas. I haven't researched the Mainland ones much. Things like this. Although, now that I look, it's more the crazy costumes/hairstyles that get me.

Y U MAKE IT SO CONFUSING?
I thought you actually meant mainland China, and you were just oo lazy to type China! NOBODY LUMPS VIETNAM AND KOREA TOGETHER. I think.

Hong Kong is very weird. I was born there, and I still don't know much. They don't really have citizenship the same way America has it. You have an ID card to identify you as a resident. And since I was born there, I have my own ID card granting me the right to vote there. But of course I hold a US passport/citizenship.

It's a moving movie, radically different from Disney's take. But if you are expecting a roly poly fat dude singing and dancing to I'll Make A Man Out of You--it's not happening. Though the male lead is hot. The enemy is just weird though, like they stepped out of Disney.

Korean historicals go on forever. I think I watched one that was 180 episodes since my aunt loves them and asked us to record it for her. The shorter ones span 50 episodes. With the royalty all mad at each other and deviously planning to backstab each other...

I used to love the fancy head things. Then I got older and it was like "oh gosh, all those fancy thingys must weigh a ton"
I secretly would love to time travel back into that period and be a princess.

You had me at "the male lead is hot." Ahem. I do love the songs in the disney version, but I can always have a dance party after. The enemy actually looks like from the cartoon. O_O I feel bad for that guy looking like that.

I prefer the modern stuff. The closest I got was Goong, in which they sometimes wear the crazy costumes, which always made me lol, even though it probably shouldn't have. Cultural sensitivity fail.

At least I now know where they got their inspiration for Queen Amidala's appearance.

I am debating their choice of the word 'mainland' to describe China, because it is defined, according to Merriam Webster as "a continent or the main part of a continent as distinguished from an offshore island or sometimes from a cape or peninsula." This means Mainland should mean any of the non-island countries, not just China!

Right? There hasn't been a good one since I was in middle school.

I WILL.

True, but I am more used to seeing those, so they're less immediately entertaining, which is why I need to work my way back slowly.

August 13, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Blogger Lilian said...

I think using the term depends on context. Because here in Hawaii, we refer to the states as the mainland. "My relatives are in the mainland" or "I'm leaving for the mainland for college." And nobody would ever think you're referring to the mainland of another continent or Asia. Nor would anyone think you're going off to Canada or something even though it's connected.

Which is why I think the term "mainland" only suffices if you are in a Chinese-dominate country and everyone there agrees that mainland means China. Like when I was in Hong Kong, we'd rarely say "I'm going to China," rather we'd say "I'm going up to the mainland." And Hong Kong is not in the water, it's actually on the edge of the continent, though they do have an island as well.
I thought you were referring to mainland china because we were talking about Asian dramas, since that seems to be the common term.

Seriously, what is Disney doing?

August 15, 2012 at 12:28 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Well, yes. What the 'mainland' is depends on where you're living, so if you're in Asia, the mainland is going to be that giant chunk of land. If you're in the US, same thing. You're in the US. The people making sites for Asian drama are in Asia.

Then why say that on a site clearly intended for Americans (and maybe other english-speaking folk) to watch Asian dramas? Why not say something they would understand?!?!?

Is mainland China only a PART of China?

No clue. Pixar's okay.

August 15, 2012 at 8:12 AM
Blogger Lilian said...

I think the term mainland is still exclusive to being part of the same country. Just like Hawaii's mainland doesn't include Canada even though it is a part of that "giant chunk of land." And I don't think people making English sites for Asian dramas are in Asia. I am pretty sure most of them are in the US. Their English too good. <--completely not a stereotypical generalization. *cough*

BECAUSE WE THINK AMERICANS ARE AS SMART IF NOT SMARTER THAN US. YOU GUYS INVENTED THE ATOMIC BOMB!
Or we tend to think whoever is watching Korean dramas has enough of an Asian background to know. And if you don't, trial and error! IT's not like people can watch a Mainland China drama and be like "is that Korean? Indian? Filipino?"...can they?

Mainland China is the country except Hong Kong and Taiwan (depending if the person associates themselves with China) I suppose. If you want to include all the other Asian countries...Mainland Asia might be a better term.

Brave's soundtrack is pretty good. I didn't watch the movie though. I heard it barely has anything to do with being brave, just not mistaking your mom for a bear.

August 15, 2012 at 4:39 PM
Blogger Christina said...

LOL. Well, if one of us has to say something racist about Asians, it should be you. BUT if those sites are made in the US, then WHY WOULD THEY SAY MAINLAND, since AS YOU ARE ARGUING 'mainland' refers only to YOUR OWN COUNTRY. If it's Americans, it should say China! (I do not know why I am so passionate about this issue, but I AM.)

But the sites don't say Mainland China. That makes sense. They just say Mainland. Sigh. *punches hole through wall*
