Waiting on Wednesday (21): Forthcoming Dystopian Series

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine.

This week, I'm highlighting forthcoming dystopian/post-apocalytpic series that I'm really excited to check out. These all sound awesome, and I hope I love them!

The Program
Program, Book 1

Author: Suzanne Young
Expected Publication Date: April 30, 2012
Publisher: Simon Pulse

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone.

With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in.

And The Program is coming for them.

Inhuman
Fetch, Book 1

Author: Kat Falls
Expected Publication Date: March 2013
Publisher: Scholastic

Synopsis from Goodreads:

In a world ravaged by mutation, a teenage girl must travel into the forbidden Savage Zone to recover lost artifacts or her father’s life is forfeit.

America has been ravaged by a war that has left the eastern half of the country riddled with mutation. Many of the people there exhibit varying degrees of animal traits. Even the plantlife has gone feral.

Crossing from west to east is supposed to be forbidden, but sometimes it’s necessary. Some enter the Savage Zone to provide humanitarian relief. Sixteen-year-old Lane’s father goes there to retrieve lost artifacts—he is a Fetch. It’s a dangerous life, but rewarding—until he’s caught.

Desperate to save her father, Lane agrees to complete his latest job. That means leaving behind her life of comfort and risking life and limb—and her very DNA—in the Savage Zone. But she’s not alone. In order to complete her objective, Lane strikes a deal with handsome, roguish Rafe. In exchange for his help as a guide, Lane is supposed to sneak him back west. But though Rafe doesn’t exhibit any signs of “manimal” mutation, he’s hardly civilized . . . and he may not be trustworthy.

The Culling
The Torch Keeper, Book 1

Author: Steven dos Santos
Expected Publication Date: March 8, 2013
Publisher: Flux

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Who would you choose?

Lucian “Lucky” Spark has been recruited for training by the totalitarian government known as The Establishment. According to Establishment rules, if a recruit fails any level of the violent training competitions, a family member is brutally killed . . . and the recruit has to choose which one.

As the five recruits form uneasy alliances in the hellish wasteland that is the training ground, an undeniable attraction develops between Lucky and the rebellious Digory Tycho. But the rules of the training ensure that only one will survive—the strongest recruits receive accolades, wealth, and power while the weakest receive death.

With Cole—Lucky’s four-year-old brother—being held as “incentive,” Lucky must marshal all his skills and use his wits to keep himself alive, no matter what the cost.

Note: Before you leave, remember that if you go fill out the form on this post, every comment on a post, including this one, during August will enter you to win one of 14 dystopian novels!

The Program sounds SO GOOD! My daughters name is Sloane so that's pretty cool too. I've seen The Culling around and that cover is kind of a turn off for me, being a cover whore and all. Great picks!

Part of me really wants to tell you to read This Is Not a Test if you haven't because the MC is named Sloane. The rest of me says you really shouldn't, because it would break your heart into a million pieces even more brutally.

The Culling I want not for the cover, but because it's lgbt!

I'm pretty excited. There's not much lgbt fiction yet!

Whoa - I haven't heard about The Program yet, putting it on my want list as it sounds REALLY good (and frighteningly plausible) :)

Having read the synopsis for The Culling, not sure it's my cup of tea, but dang that cover is pretty sweet!

Yay! It always thrills me when people find books from my WoWs. :D

Haha, I like The Culling for the synopsis, not the cover. Bahaha. Personal taste will never cease to astound me.

Inhuman and The Program sound like good books with interesting new ideas. I like the covers for both too. Super smart to have their outfits bright yellow on The Program. Iggy really catches your eye and gets you wanting tho know more. Sorry i think The Culling sounds silly. If you fail you have to pick a family member to die? No thanks.

Oh, I liked The Glimpse, though I didn't love it. Above, which had some similar themes, I didn't like either. Still, the idea is great, so there needs to be an amazing one eventually.

I can't wait to read The Program and Inhuman. I will probably read The Culling too, but truly the cover is just blah. The synopsis sounds like it might upset me though. Gotta think about that one!
