Welcome to Dystopian August + Giveaway Details

It's time for Dystopian August, guys!!!!

As everyone knows, August is the month of dystopias, because Lenore Appelhans said so. She's been doing Dystopian August and February for years now on her blog Presenting Lenore, and even has her own dystopian novel coming out this January. She features reviews, interviews and overviews of forthcoming titles. Because I love the event so much and always end up reading a bunch of dystopias anyway, I decided to copy her, because imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Make sure you also check out Lenore's blogs for even more giveaways and awesomeness!

Lenore totally does know and approve; I did not just up and steal her idea, so no worries there. Mine will be much more review-focused, since I'm a review-heavy blogger anyway. I'll hit 500 reviews during Dystopian August. Woo! I also have a couple of interviews planned and some top ten lists, as well as some Waiting on Wednesdays with the dystopian novels I'm most excited for in the coming year. I've got 40-some books I'm hoping to review during August, only 10 of which have I already read, so I hope I get to all of them! Oh, and, just so you all know, I'm pretty loose on my inclusion into Dystopian August. Some of the books we may even decide AREN'T dystopian, but if they have buzz for possibly being dystopian, they'll still be here. Also, post-apocalytpic and dystopian are buds. Dystopian August is very inclusive. :)

The first review, coming up at noon today will be for Lenore's book, so make sure you come back and check that out. For the duration of Dystopian August, we will have special guest judges here to provide ratings: the zombicorns!

Now, let me talk about the part everyone's most excited about: the giveaway. There will be one primary giveaway for Dystopian August: this one. I did a lot of thinking about how to work this and here's what's going to happen. The giveaway will be comment-based. For every review you comment on, you will get an entry into the giveaway. All you have to do is fill out the Google Docs form below with your contact info and comment name, and I will do all of the point tallying. Make sure you fill out the form, because otherwise all the comments in the world don't count! Following is not required, although, obviously, it would make it easier for you to come back and comment, and is always appreciated. This giveaway is US only, since I have to ship all of these bad boys. If you scroll down through, I do have an international giveaway up as well.

Did you fill out the form? Because you should.

Inquiries on Twitter indicated that people like more winners and smaller prizes, so I'm breaking it down like this.

Grand Prize: choice of 3
Second Prize: choice of 2 (from remaining titles)
Other Winners: choice of 1 (from remaining titles)

What books can you choose from?

Swipe - Evan Angler (ARC)
Struck - Jennifer Bosworth (signed)
The Selection (The Selection #1) - Kiera Cass
Matched (Matched #1) - Ally Condie (ARC)
Wither (The Chemical Garden #1) - Lauren DeStefano
Fever (The Chemical Garden #2) - Lauren DeStefano (ARC)
Invisible Sun (Black Hole Sun #2) - David Macinnis Gill
Dawn of the Dreadfuls (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies prequel) - Steve Hockensmith
Possession (Possession #1) - Elana Johnson
The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) - Julie Kagawa
America Pacifica - Anna North
Divergent (Divergent #1) - Veronica Roth
Altered (Altered #1) - Jennifer Rush (ARC)
This Is Not a Test - Courtney Summers

Yes, I do know that Dawn of the Dreadfuls is not a dystopia, but it has zombies, so I'll stretch and call it post-apocalyptic. Who cares? It's a free book, guys. I might add a couple more books to this as I read through my pile, so there could be MORE prizes.

Oh, also, I don't want to forget my international friends. I really wish it were not so expensive to ship things to you guys, but it is, so ugh. Anyway, it's not much, but I want to do something for you guys, so I'm offering a dystopia or post-apocalyptic book from your choice (within a reasonable price range TBD by me...I'm not buying you a 50 dollar book) from The Book Depository or Fishpond. Yay! This one I'm going to do with good old Rafflecopter, and I'm going to make really basic. More comments are, of course, appreciated, but I'm only requiring a comment on one review to get you going! I know the Rafflecopter is a bit more work, but I think two spreadsheets to track would make my brain explode.

International ONLY:
a Rafflecopter giveaway
Are you ready? Are you excited? You should be. You should be THIS EXCITED:

LOL. YES I AM PUMPED ABOUT THIS!! I heard about it from Leonora and was super happy because I missed the last ones and really want to participate. AND OMG OMG OMG!!!!!ALTERED! *faints* that book I have been DYING ABOUT. This is not a test also sounds GOOD, just like the classic DIVERGENT.

Will help spread the word about dystopian August! :D

Woo! I decided to have a couple of people get multiple, but otherwise to have a bunch of winners. Of course, since I'm so generous, I'm making you guys work for it. :-p

Yay! Please do spread word! I would be SO grateful!

This Is Not a Test didn't remind me of Divergent at all, but it IS amazing. I reviewed that one already, several months ago. :-D If you like Divergent, though, I think you'll love Dualed, which comes out in February. My review for that will be up mid-month!

So excited for this! I'm terrible at genre books - I usually just randomly pick up interesting-sounding books, and then everyone's like, "Yeah, we read that in 2008..." So now I will be ahead of the curve!

I was going to be like "tl;dr" with this post...but then I started reading, and it really wasn't as long as I feared!

Commenting? I practically already stalk this blog. It'll be as easy as pie. *flexes fingers*

WOO HOO! DYSTOPIAN AUGUST!! I love a good dystopian any day! *twirls*
But unfortunately, I don't know it's because I just read a novel about a serial killer...I need a lighter read. Too many people are dying in my novels!

The only dystopian novels in my TBR this month are It's Not A Test and The Knife of Never Letting Go (I've been putting this on off for too long! BUT IT LOOKS SO GIGANTIC)

oh shoot, I just realized the giveaway was for international followers only.
My apologies, ignore my entries!

Damn, the 3AM tiredness is worse than I thought. >__<

That's okay about the entering the international one. I'll just pick someone else if you win that one. Also, the US one is easier, so no worries. Just put your name and email in, since I recognize your avatar. :)

I tried to break up the length with silly gifs. Because, yeah, who doesn't love those?

You totally do stalk my blog. And I LOVE it.

Haha, well, you don't have to READ the dystopias, you just have to comment on me reading them, so you're good. I plan to read a YA romance when I finish up this month. haha. Recovery book!

I don't think The Knife of Never Letting Go is all that long, but who knows. This Is Not a Test is short! And awesome. And will break your heart.

The worst is when you pick up a book because it looks cool and like something you wanted to branch into and then it's awful and THEN everyone's like 'hello, we all reviewed this five years ago saying that!' Whoops, right?

I am excited for dystopian August, but can I just say how excited I am for the awesome GIFs in this post? The NBC comedy love made my Wednesday morning happy.

You can ALWAYS tell me how excited you are about gifs, because I find them super entertaining. I couldn't resist the Thursday show love, because they're the best. That's one of my favorite Ron Swanson moments right there.

Ron Swanson. Katie, your mission is to go watch Parks & Rec!

I'm probably going to hate myself for this giveaway when I have to mail everything, but I wanted this event to be exciting, and people like giveaways!

GIFS! AHHH!

I am definitely as excited as Tina Fey is for Dystopian August! I'm actually reading your copy of Fever right now (Finally! I like it so far, and I should be finished within a few days), so my August may turn quite dystopian, too.

"you don't have to READ the dystopias, you just have to comment on me reading them, so you're good. I plan to read a YA romance when I finish up this month. haha. Recovery book!"
but..but..I wanted to join in on the cool party! Plus, I wouldn't be able to write dystopian reviews, thus not being able to enter Lenore's dystopian-review giveaway (if I do choose to join Dystopian August.) *pouts*
Unless you write a negative review, I will probably put the book on my TBR--and then I will only skim the review. I only hope I have something interesting to say; unlike most of the WoW commenters who I swear didn't read my post and just copied and pasted some generic message like "interesting choice! here's mine:" to linkplug.

I liked the GIFS more because DARREN CRISS IS IN THE FIRST ONE!

I'm just started Enchanted Inc. as my recovery book! I hope it works~

August 1, 2012 at 7:40 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Well, then you SHOULD join in on the dystopia-reading. And you should enter Lenore's giveaway, because that prize is awesome sauce.

Right. Well, your tbr is going to be attacked, because I mostly have good reviews so far. I've had a lot of 4s so far. Only one 5, though.

Yeah, I don't like that part of WoW. I try really hard not to use the phrase 'great pick,' because OMG so boring.

Bahahaha. He is so ready for Dystopian August! Just like me!

YES! You have Enchanted, Inc.! OMG! I hope you love it!

"Well, your tbr is going to be attacked, because I mostly have good reviews so far."
*rolls up sleeves* BRING IT ON!!
I am waiting for your review of Incarnate, I saw the cover staring at me again at the library and I was like "NO! No matter how gorgeous you look, your story is about a whiny girl!"

For WoW comments..it would be nice if people actually bothered to put the title of the book in their comment..or something relevant. Instead of just two words. *sulks*

OKAY, BACK TO READING ENCHANTED INC.
(ooo, I didn't know it was a YA book, but the library labeled it as such)

August 1, 2012 at 10:53 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Lol, well I will be reading Incarnate. Or, at least, my super ambitious schedule calls for me to read it. :-p We'll see.

Right. I like when people actually say things.

It's totes not YA. It's chick lit. If anything it might be 'new adult,' but that new category makes me want to throw things.

August 1, 2012 at 11:00 PM
Blogger Lilian said...

Well, you always surprise me by how many books you manage to read. (it makes me feel bad! hmph!)

My library is funky with classifying like that, maybe they don't actually read the books so they don't know...
Ready Player One was classified as YA as well. Which might be a good idea since there's a dire lack of "male" YA novels.

It surprised me when Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Brandon Sanderson were also in the YA section..and Christopher Pike's Falling (I picked it up thinking it was a YA novel when I was 14, then the gore creeped me out--so not a YA novel).
New Adult is a genre? I thought it was just "new adult books." *pat pat*
Keep calm and ride a zombie unicorn.

August 1, 2012 at 11:13 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Lol. Sorry. I will...not change my reading habits. As it is, there is zero chance I will get to read all the books I want to before I die. TRAGIC.

Weird, yeah, I wouldn't classify things that way. Whatevs, though! As long as they have the books, that's what really matters.

I think Ruiz Zafon does have some books that are YA books. Maybe. Not The Shadow in the Wind though. Nope. They're trying to make 'new adult' a thing to cover books for people in the 18-22 range, since teens can't handle reading a book about someone slightly older apparently. *stomps*

And when I was a kid I was like "what if I read ALL the books and I will be bored? and the writers won't write fast enough?" OF course, that was when all the books in my reading level only look like ten minutes to read. Now I am l like "We'll worry about having no books to read after you get through your humongous TBR pile on your dresser." Not to mention the articles/news I also regularly read. *sigh*

Sometimes I think prison would be great for reading. With nothing to do--I will have no excuse not to tackle The Iliad, Ulysses, Tolstoy...
