Cover Snark (27)

Welcome to Cover Snark, where we discuss covers freely and openly. Art is subjective, so feel free to love things I hated and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments! There are a ton of covers this week, so let's get started, shall we?

Ink (The Paper Gods #1) - Amanda Sun
Thoughts: Please don't hate me, but I'm not crazy in love with the art style. It's the girl that bothers me, though I don't know why. However, I do think the cover is just what it should be stylistically to go with the plot. Also, I freaking love the ink drips.

The Elite (The Selection #2) - Kiera Cass
Thoughts: Alright, I know I should be snarking all over the place, but I freaking love pretty dress covers. This dress has some issues (what's up with the hanging bits), but is still way more awesome than the blue one. Also, I find that shade of burnt orange so visually appealing. I also love that icy backgrouns still. Her hairstyle really doesn't suit the dress, and I do think the color is a little too close to the shade of her hair to be flattering. Also, that crown above the title is lame, and it doesn't blend in as well as the one on The Selection did.

Tidal (Watersong #3) - Amanda Hocking
Thoughts: Goddamnit, cover designers, we have talked about this. Make sure you look at the prior book covers in a series before designing your cover. Eesh. The first two barely look like a series, and this one doesn't fit AT ALL. What's with the mood change? Why did we decide to stop with the pretty blue clovers in favor of this awful Lux + Altered style cover? Anyone able to tell me what's up with the feathers? Or why they're being spied on by a lighthouse? Or why they're only that deep in the water, but this is apparently a body of water boats regularly use, since there's a lighthouse? Also, where's he reaching???

Eternal Hope (The Hope Series #2) - Frankie Rose
Thoughts: Tropeity trope trope. Seriously, this is like all of the ridiculous elements of YA paranormal romances combined: shadow person, terrible filigree, shirtless broody guy, tattoo, ridiculous title font, and SHINY HANDS. Why are there so many YA books about guys with glowing hands?

Phoenix (Black City Chronicles #2) - Elizabeth Richards
Thoughts: Okay, so, first off, let me say that this cover is beautiful. The color of the feathers and the perfection of the flames are balling. My issue, though, is that I really have no clue what either of these covers has to do with the books. I've read Black City and there was nary an exploding flower, and, so far as I know, phoenixes are absent. Oh well, they are visually arresting, and every cover doesn't need to be literal, I suppose. I do not like that they moved the author name to the bottom, and I don't think the boring title font works as well on this cover as it did on Black City. Also, why would the feather be reflected like that? It makes no sense! On the water maybe, but on the city and the sky too?

Awoken - Timothy Miller
Thoughts: Pretty good. I like it from a distance, and I'm hugely creeped out by the shadows at the bottom. Things that bother me: the random red in the middle of the O, the creepy faces on the edges, the strip of white between the gold border and the main image on the right side.

Dead Things - Stephen Blackmoore
Thoughts: Another UF for men. The art style is a little weird. I'm not a huge fan of pictures of people that almost look real. It creeps me out. I feel like this would be better with a bit more crispness in the background.

Agave Kiss (Corine Solomon #5) - Ann Aguirre
Thoughts: Okay, most of the covers for this series are simply awful, particularly for book one. Add in some model changes and that weird hairstyle on Devil's Punch and these are a hot mess. This one's pretty good so far as this series goes. Of course, this one, like the others, still looks like it's for a 90s books, what with the short, stomach-baring shirt. The background couls look less fake and the model could look less like she's checking herself out in the mirror, but this could be worse.

The Amber Light (Beyond Humanity #1) - Becky-Elizabeth Searson
Thoughts: As an indie, I guess it's good. The image is high quality, but I feel like the various elements just fon't fit together. From the look of the model, I'm thinking something pirate-y, but the font treatments are so fruity and lame. I can't even. The electric blue eyes are not doing the cover any favors.

Mr. Real (Code of Shadows #1) - Carolyn Crane
Thoughts: GROSS! ICK! I hate this. So much. Giant, hairy, sweaty, burly man, who's apparently on fire. *shudders*

Mind Raider (The Anomaly Trilogy #2) - Anna Hackett
Thoughts: You can tell she's a mind reader because she grips her head. This does remove some of the usefulness of the talent, since people will always know when you're eavesdropping on their mind, but what can you do? Also, are her hands creepy or am I weird?

Dark Halo (Angel Eyes Trilogy #3) - Shannon Dittemore
Thoughts: Yet another series where the books in no way look like they belong together. They're all awful in their own unique ways. This one features a guy coyly using an angels wing as a fan. He has lovely fake blue eyes like the girl up above, and the longest, sootiest ashes ever.

Enlightened (The Light Tamer #2) - Devyn Dawson
Thoughts: Apparently this is the week of non-matching covers. The first one looks like a YA contemporar, and this one looks paranormal, or maybe like the cover to an edgy yoga book. Those issues aside, Enlightened is a decent indie paranormal cover. I do like the background.

Half Lives - Sara Grant
Thoughts: I like it. OMG second girl upside down! I love surprise images. Awesomeness.

Red - Alison Cherry
Thoughts: Sassy red head? Heck yes! Also, it fits the blurb PERFECTLY.

Wild Awake - Hilary T. Smith
Thoughts: I love when designers can make contrasting covers work. Orange and purple ought to look awful, but I like it here. Very dramatic and sure to stand out on the shelf. I'm not sure what's up with the model's pose, though. Mid dance move?

Rush, Fever & Burn (Breathless #1-3) - Maya Banks
Thoughts: More authors are hopping on the erotica train, since it goes to the land of monies. These covers are pretty, but weird. Like why does Fever have ice? Fevers are hot, right? Or have I been laboring under a misapprehension all these years?

A Touch of Scarlet (Unbound #2) - Eve Marie Mont
Thoughts: I just don't like this one as much as the first cover. I just love the shiny purple dress! I do like the red shawl a lot, but otherwise I'm a little bored. I hoped for more!

Fractured (Slated #2) - Teri Terry
Thoughts: There's no blurb yet that I can find, which means I don't know if I should hate this for having a different cover model. I like how these work as a series for sure, though. The tag line is lame, but otherwise, this is pretty good.

Dance of the Red Death (Masque of the Red Death #2) - Bethany Griffin
Thoughts: Okay, I don't like this one as much as the first, but it's still awesome. Parasol trumps fan and red is creepier than purple. I love these covers, though, and they totally fit the story! That dress does not flatter her at all, am I right?

Legacy (Night School #2) - C.J. Daugherty
Thoughts: The French version of the cover for book two in the Night School series was revealed last week. It matched book one, and this one doesn't AT ALL. I do like the creepy school. I don't like that her hair is a different shade of red or that it's ALMOST the same as the color of the font treatment but not quite.

The Fall of Arthur - J.R.R. Tolkien
Thoughts: Tolkien + King Arthur? Hell to the yes! The cover fits the theme of Tolkien's non-LOTR covers pretty well, and does the whole knighthood thing. It's not super exciting, but solid.

Afterglow (Wildefire #3) - Karsten Knight
Thoughts: I like this one. The Embers & Echoes cover never really did it for me, but this one's almost as cool as Wildefire's. The one thing I don't like is the title treatment. I actually really like the way the title is done on book one, dainty, and probably shiny. This font they're using for the other two looks a little too comical for my tastes.

Cover Battle: The Dead and the Buried - Kim Harrington
First Attempt vs. Redesign: Usually, it's pretty evident why a cover's been taken back to the drawing board, even if the second attempt fails. In this case, I have no clue why they redid this one. I think the first attempt is much prettier, creepier and more unique. Oh well.

Cover Battle: Fearless (Reckless #2) - Cornelia Funke
First Attempt vs. Redesign: Much as I love the first one, I can see why they would redesign: the cover didn't match Reckless' cover. Unfortunately, while the new one's cool too, it isn't as awesome as the first one AND still fails to match any of the Reckless covers.

Cover Battle: Easy - Tammara Webber
Indie vs. Penguin: Penguin purchased the phenomenally popular Easy and just barely changed the cover. I don't know about you, but they shouldn't have bothered. I like original font treatment for the title better.

Cover Battle: Doomed - Tracy Deebs
First Attempt vs. Redesign: Well, I didn't like the first cover, but all of a sudden I am overcome with nostalgia for it. This is the week for stupid redesigns.

Double Vision: A Temptation of Angels - Michelle Zink / Weaving Magic - Mindy Hardwick
Thoughts: Two things that aren't good ideas in creating your indie cover: using stupid font, using an image that is easily recognizable from a better cover. Wah wah.

WTF of the Week: Who Peed on My Yoga Mat?: More Stories from a Perfectly Imperfect Life - Lela Davidson
Thoughts: I believe the words you're searching for are 'lol whut.'

Bonus WTF of the Week: GPS with Benefits - Vanessa Morgan
Thoughts: For the safety of yourself and other motorists, it is recommended that you use your TimTim only when the car is stopped.

Outstanding Cover of the Week: Half Lives by Sara Grant

Ink: Nah, I won't kill you. I like the girl, but the fonts for the title and the author's name throw things off for me. It feels like they forgot about adding the author's name until the last second.

Phoenix: I like it except for the background color. The feather just doesn't stand out against the sepia like the rose did on the first cover's background.

Red: Ooh, I like that cover too. The book itself sounds a little silly, but it's the right kind of silly. I want it!

The Dead and Buried: I hate the redesign too. I'm hoping I'll get the ARC of it that I requested so I can have the old cover. *crosses fingers*

I totally agree about INK. Like...there's something weird about her face. Maybe her mouth is too big? I don't know. Otherwise though, it's awesome!

1. That cover art just might make me rethink reading the book. Too. Much. Pastel!!! *growls*

2. I would love the cover for The Elite but I am a firm believer of keeping gingers out of that particular color. (I prefered the blue one. :-P)

3. Is Amanda Hocking back in charge of choosing the cover art? I’m seeing a pattern of “hot mess” again.

5. Very pretty – as you were.

6. Okay, I’ll grant that it’s interesting, but it just does not mesh AT ALL. *sigh* Whatever. I don’t think they really even try anymore.

7. Meh, Jim Butcher stuff revamped.

10. Carolyn Crane is such a nice lady. I hate that this cover happened to one of her books.

11. This can also be the cover art for a porno.

12. Mess

13. What the hell? Contemporary THEN paranormal? I think I heard someone talking about how this was going to be a thing...

14. This is clever. I’ll allow it.

15. As a ginger, I had to buy this book. :-)

16. This one makes my eyes hurt. I don’t like it. :-(

17. Umm... They match?

18. Well, this one looks like a costume for a local play group’s performance of whatever 19th century play is popular. (Excuse me but I believe my brain is broken today.)

19. These are about vampires, whether they are or not. A vampire cover model is a vampire cover model, but the gray is definitely cooler.

20. Loved the first book, hate the second book’s cover. *sigh*

22. It looks exactly like The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún, but I suppose that’s the whole point.

23. I know you are going to think horrible things about me, but these covers make me think of burning vaginas. I blame that horrible movie The Bachelor (as I do for many other things).

Cover Battles:
1. I prefer the first one, too. Maybe going for a more ethnic cover model?

2. I prefer the first one again.

3. What a stupid waste of a salary.

I can’t comment on the bottom stuffs after that. I need these brain cells for later. ;-)

Me too! It's vaguely reminiscent of Sisters Red, which is my favorite cover ever.

It MAY be the lips. I may also be sad because they missed an opportunity to have a hot Asian guy on the cover... I see white girls ALL the time.

Oh man, you are so right about the author name on Ink. It doesn't fit AT ALL.

Phoenix: Contrast fail!

Red: I am so with you. I read the summary and went 'lol whut,' and immediately added it to my tbr.

Dead and Buried: Good plan. *crosses fingers for you*

1. What? You don't like pastel? :-p

2. As I said, the hair and dress are not a flattering combo. Too bad, that.

3. I see that. It's a shame, because I really love the cover for Lullaby, though you probably don't.

7. Pretty much.

10. This cover should never happen to anything, because it's awful and gross and euuuuugh.

11. BAHAHA. You find one EVERY week.

12. It's Christian fiction...what do you expect?

13. I don't know if the books are contemporary then paranormal, but they look like that.

14. :-D

15. Already? You'll get your preorder in like 9 months. :-p

16. Awww.

17. They do. Full points for matching!

18. Hahaha, it does. Maybe that's why it doesn't seem quite right (to my eyes) for any class in particular.

19. I don't think they are.

20. I really liked the first book, too. WE AGREE!

22. I suppose. They're all very Beowulf.

23. Whatever you say, Georgia O'Keeffe.

CB1. Is she more ethnic or is just darker?

CB2/3: Yup, serious waste of time on those redesigns.

Ink: I like this inky/watercolor style, so this is a win for me. She does look like she's about to burst into song though.

Elite: I want to like this, really I do, but I keep being distracted by her dress. What is with the extra octopus legs trailing from the waist?

Tidal: That Lighthouse is the second cousin of the Eye of Sauron. And you pose a great question; just what IS his hand doing?

Eternal Hope: AHAHAHAHAHAH!

Phoenix: Maybe someone with a better understanding of art and drawing can help me with this but am I right in thinking that the shadow/reflection of the feather is facing the wrong way?

Awoken: I am not a fan. Random Ruby, ManWoman looming face, shadows and crag, white strip, gargoyle faces - this cover is ALL over the place.

Agave Kiss: Aside from Agave Kiss sounding like a new flavor of cosmopolitan, this lady looks like she's in a low-budget Vampire Slayer porn film. "Ooh, I am going to slay you now. Uhn! I missed! I just cannot seem to stab your perfectly sculpted pectoral!"

Mr. Real: Is he supposed to be smokin' hot? Get it...smokin'...'cause he's on fire? *slaps knee*

Mind Raider: Pretty sure those are not the model's hands. Think about how wonky her elbows would be if they were. I like to imagine another person lying on a table and she's putting her head into their hands. #awkwardphotoshoot

Dark Halo: How tiny is that angel wing?!

Wild Awake: Inner ear problem, throws off your balance.

Fractured: I JUST noticed the author's name is Teri Terry.

Night School Legacy: I like this cover but I understand that it is not true as a part of the series and, therefore, a loss.

The Dead and Buried: The first cover was so much better? Why? Why would they do this?

Easy: They had to make more room for blurbage.

GPS with benefits: I had a physical aversion to this cover.

I think Ink and Dance of the Red Death are my favorites. Although, to be fair, if your title includes the word "red" in it, I feel like you should use the color red. Even a different shade of red would have been better than purple.

Ink: I really love this cover. It's a favorite of mine. But the author's name really stands out and not in a good way. It was the first thing I noticed when I saw this cover.

Eternal Hope: Everything is wrong about this cover. Tacky filagree, weird standing position on the male model, and that tattoo looks obviously photoshopped on. ICK.

Phoenix: Love.

Awoken: I think the red in the center is a gem.

Dead Things: I do not like blurry covers like this.

The Amber Light, Mr. Real, and The Mind Reader: I completely agree with everything you said. Like, COMPLETELY.

Dark Halo: I don't like guys with long eyelashes. It creeps me out. But yeah, this cover doesn't match at all.

Enlightened: I actually really love this cover but I have to knock points off for not matching with the first one.

Half Lives and Red: Love these two.

Wild Awake: Love the contrasting cover combo. But I don't care for the cover model's pose. It's awkward.

A Touch of Scarlet: Sorry, but this looks like a Glamour Shots photo shoot gone wrong. I hate it.

Fractured: Umm..to me that DOES look like the same cover model. Her face is just scrunched and her hair isn't blurred out.

Dance of the Red Death: Love but not as much as the original.

Afterglow: This may be my favorite of all of the covers.

The Dead and Buried and Fearless: Love both the originals more. But I like the blue of Fearless the most.

Easy: I like the new font better but not the color. I wish they would have kept the old color.

Aww, so many redheads, I was practically drooling! :))) Red was alright, but the rest of the covers I didn't like at all (Easy excluded because that book was awesome!). Also Mr. Real has a different sweaty guy on it now, Carolyn had to change it because another author was using the same stock photo and her book was being released on the same day. The smoke and sweat is (I'm guessing here!) because he is a firefighter :) Night School Legacy is WTF cover. Where is her doc Martens? She isn't into heels :)
Fab Cover Snark as usual, Christina!

@ Angel Eyes trilogy ; I've seen covers for #2 and #3 around but I didn't know they were part of the series...

@ Easy ; I wished they kept the original font treatment.

@ Fractured ; I'm pretty sure she's the same model as the one of Slated. Look at her lips and shape of the eyes.

@ Dance of the Red Death ; Yup, I like the first one better too. This one's pretty but somehow I'm just not feeling it. Maybe it's the silver + purple color combination..

Ink: Haha, that would be awesome if she burst into song, but probably less effective in written form than in Once More, with Feeling.

Elite: Bahaha, I couldn't come up with a good way to describe those, but they are somewhat like tentacles.

Tidal: Haha, he's getting fresh while Sauron's looking on. KINKY.

Phoenix: I probably know less than you do about that, but I'm pretty sure a lot's wrong with that shadow.

Agave Kiss: OH man, there must be a MST3K about that, right? WANT TO WATCH.

Mr. Real: Oh, you.

Mind Raider: Lol.

Dark Halo: I just refused to comment on the wing, because wings are ALWAYS the wrong size. Cover designers apparently think heavenly angels fly around with wings the size of a sparrows'.

Fractured: I read a post about that. It's her real name, though I think Teri was an abbreviation or a nickname or something and she married someone last name of Terry. My quandary? Why not get a new nickname or not take his name. Glutton for punishment.

Dead and Buried: Because they hate nice things.

GPS: Right? Ew.

Or a reddish purple? I agree with that.

Ink: That's funny you say that, because I DIDN'T notice the author's name until Ashleigh pointed it out. It doesn't fit at all. Ugh. Awful.

Eternal Hope: They'd seen enough covers to have a basic idea what's out there and just did all of it BADLY.

Dead Things: I rarely like a blurry cover. I love Unremembered though. But there it seems to fit.

Dark Halo: Eh, I'm not bothered. I don't like when they have enormous lips though.

Enlightened: Yeah, it's pretty solid alone but together it's no good.

Half Lives and Red: Me too.

Wild Awake: She looks a bit like she's having a seizure standing up.

A Touch of Scarlet: I'm not a big fan either. Sigh.

Fractured: Really? They look so different to me. Like the eyes. I don't know. I'm so bad with faces apparently.

Afterglow: I think I like the first the best still.

Yep, I'm late again. Surprised much?!

Tidal really doesn't match the series - why do they do this, why?! And the hand hahahaha!

Eternal Hope - you mean guys DON'T have glowing hands? Man, that's disappointing.

Phoenix - the feather is too big and in-yo-face - but I like the cityscape in the background.

The Amber Light - WHY do they photoshop eyes - WHY.

Mr. Real needs a real wax. Stat.

Dark Halo - the eyes with the lashes just add up to CREEEEEEPY.

I'm actually not a fan of the cover for Dance of the Red Death - it's kinda wishy washy, a little more purple on the dress would have done it for me!

GPS with Benefits - oh man that made me laugh, considering who my employer is! Branding would have a fit!

Awesome snarkness as always :-D

SHOCKED! (not really)

Tidal - I don't know why. They should stop.

Phoenix - IN YO FACE.

Amber Light - Because they're not pretty enough in real life, I guess.

Dark Halo - Those eyelashes will haunt your dreams.

Yeah, I kind of agree.

GPS - You should put up flyers of it around the office.
