Cover Snark (47): "Is This a Kissing Book?"

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don't write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I've linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Commenting pro tip: The easiest way to comment on such a long post is to open the post in two windows (really easy if you use Google Reader). Comment in one and scroll the covers in the other. That's actually how I comment on other people's reviews too. I can't remember all my comments by the time I get to the box!

Shiny and New:

1. Out of Play - Nyrae Dawn & Jolene Perry
Thoughts: New adult cover designers, did you know that your cover might look more interesting if it wasn't a kissy-face scene like EVERY SINGLE NEW ADULT COVER? Also, I love how the tagline hints at a codependent relationship. Fantastic.

2. Isla and the Happily Ever After - Stephanie Perkins
Thoughts: I know lots of people love these new covers because they're not as cutesy and that Stephanie Perkins loves them because she's all about settings, but I do not care for them. The cutesy covers seem like they fit the content, and this looks like an adult literary fiction novel, only with that lame flower added on to appeal to youths.

3. Hild - Nicola Griffith
Thoughts: I like this. Rather daring for a YA cover, because that's a seriously old school art style they're using. I'm not sure what the appeal will be to teen readers, but I was a history major and I think it's awesome.

4. The Lost Sun (The United States of Asgard #1) - Tessa Gratton
Thoughts: Have I mentioned how much I love the way the magazines will cut off the bottom of the cover if you copy it so it can stay an exclusive cover reveal for longer? Because I love it. So thoughtful. I'm sure there's a full version out by now, but, honestly, I don't care. This is how the pub wanted it. Also, the missing bottom strip cannot save this cheesefest of awful. The tagline seals the deal: you mean it's about everything in the world trying to stop their love? HOW ORIGINAL!

5. The Planet Thieves - Dan Krokos
Thoughts: This cover doesn't hold much appeal for me, but I can see young boys being ALL about this.

6. Second Chance Boyfriend - Monica Murphy
Thoughts: Goddammit, NA. We talked about the kissy-faces. Also, stop with the upside down kisses. This isn't a thing unless you're Spiderman. You are not Spiderman.

7. Olivia Twisted - Vivi Barnes
Thoughts: That awkward moment where you're sure a book is a self-pub and then realize it's Entangled.

8. Freakboy - Kristin Elizabeth Clark
Thoughts: This isn't my style of cover, but it will no doubt appeal to Ellen Hopkins fans, as will that blurb.

9. Doctor Sleep (The Shining #2) - Stephen King
Thoughts: Oh man, I just noticed the face in the background. That makes this a bit creepier. I feel like that's too much of the smoky font, and the title and author name run together too much.

10. In the Air - Crystal Serowka
Thoughts: This is a weird place to dance, and that looks seriously unsafe. However, dancing is pretty, so whatver. What really upsets me is that the title is on their twice and hard to read both times.

11. The Mistress Files - Tiffany Reisz
Thoughts: This makes me think of 40 Days and 40 Nights.

12. Of Gaea (Of Legends #1) - Victoria Escobar
Thoughts: The epic battle of horse versus crane. Also, Gaea's apparently a hippie.

13. Unchosen (The Reaper Diaries #2) by Michele Vail
Thoughts: Is she naked? Seriously, if there's a zombie outbreak, nude is the last thing I want to be other than maybe covered in barbeque sauce or blood. Why make yourself easier to eat?

14. Tempt the Stars (Cassandra Palmer #6) - Karen Chance
Thoughts: She seems off somehow; I think it's the hair... The background's pretty though.

15. Violet Dawn (Violet Night #2) - Lynn Rush
Thoughts: Oh good. Magic swirlies, tattoos and badly photoshopped purple eyes. Just what I always wanted.

16. Reconnaissance (Paradise Reclaimed #2) - Aubrie Dionne
Thoughts: Not as compelling as the first. Or maybe I just don't like spiders. Either way, no.

17. The Sword Dancer (Tang Dynasty #4) - Jeannie Lin
Thoughts: Pretty! That kimono is so beautiful. However, I think the Harlequin logo is seriously distracting.

18. When Did You See Her Last? (All the Wrong Questions #2) - Lemony Snicket
Thoughts: So cute! I like the menacing school a lot, and, for some reason, the INK/INC. boxes.

19. Siege and Storm (The Grisha #2) - Leigh Bardugo
Thoughts: So this cover really doesn't seem to fit with my idea of the contents at all, but I really don't care because LOOK AT IT. The title is a freaking dragon! That is awesome.

20. One - Leigh Ann Kopans
Thoughts: I can work with these wings. I also love that summer dress. Spring will soon be here and I can wear pretty things like that again. Should that door have a handle? *tilts head*

21. Parasite  (Parasitism #1) - Mira Grant
Thoughts: I've seen a few covers with the pill casings. I like it, but it's not blowing me away. BUT OMG I NEED IT NOW.

22. Through the Zombie Glass (Alice in Zombieland #2) - Gena Showalter
Thoughts: Cover Math: Pretensions to having something to do with Alice in Wonderland + The Selection + White Girls = Through the Zombie Glass. Unsurprisingly, this mishmash ends up looking like shit. Thanks to Blythe Harris for figuring out what that model looks like, a Wayons brother in drag as a white woman apparently.

23. Going Dark (Blackout #0.5) - Robison Wells
Thoughts: Pretty. Even though I don't think the shades of purple are friends.

24. Horde (Razorland #3) - Ann Aguirre
Thoughts: Well, this is probably the best of the bunch, as the first two definitely had a tendency towards cheesiness.

25. Relic - Renee Collins
Thoughts: Oh dear. Another one I was positive was a self-pub, again from Entangled. They need to step it up. The only thing I like about this is the cute dragon on the top left of the title.

26. Tethered (Iron Seas #2.5) - Meljean Brook
Thoughts: This may be the most work that has gone into a between-the-novels cover ever.

27. Life, A.D. - Michelle E. Reed
Thoughts: What is Dez? If it's a person, I want no part of this. Nonetheless, I'm sufficiently intrigued, even if it's pretty stereotypical city and reflection with floating partial face.

28. Autumn Whispers (Otherworld #14) - Yasmine Galenorn
Thoughts: Is that like the cat version of the Face of Boe? Whatever it is, I do not like it.

29. The Fallout (The Compound #2) - S.A. Bodeen
Thoughts: Pretty cool in a gross sort of way. I think it's the green mist that's icking me out about this. Nice companion cover to The Compound.

30. Viral Nation - Shaunta Grimes
Thoughts: That's pretty awesome. I like that she's got a puppy with her to go through the apocalypse. However, that dog better not die. Are we clear on that? Good.

31. The Space Between (The Book of Phoenix #1) - Kristie Cook
Thoughts: I like that you can see the ground in the back, so that you know that the person on the left is hanging upside down from the sky. You know, like people do.

32. Fangs for Nothing (The Fangover #2) - Erin McCarthy
Thoughts: "I really should have listened to my agent when he said not to take this gig. *facepalms*

33. Game. Set. Match. (Outerbanks Tennis Academy #1) - Jennifer Iacopelli
Thoughts: New Adult, I want you to just stop and think about what Fred Savage would say about all the kissing on your covers. That said, I do love the bright colors for the font.

34. Cruel Summer - James Dawson
Thoughts: This looks like a 90s horror movie.

35. Sunny Sweet is So NOT Sorry - Jennifer Ann Mann
Thoughts: Glue in hair? Ahhhhh. Sunny Sweet would be in for a world of hurt.

36. Eternal Echoes - Angela Corbett
Thoughts: "Love can't protect her from her past." NO. If only it could protect her from this cover.

37. The Liberator (Dante Walker #2) - Victoria Scott
Thoughts: Ew. I do like that I can sometimes tell what books I would hate just by the cover.

38. Vicious - V.E. Schwab
Thoughts: Don't mind me. Just bleeding into a wine glass and surveying my orange kingdom. As one does.

39. Reality Boy - A.S. King
Thoughts: That...is not what I was expecting. A bit too much yellow for me. Honestly, not a huge fan of looking at it, because it's just too bright.

40. Fantastic Family Whipple - Matthew Ward
Thoughts: This looks like a middle grade It's a Mad Mad Mad World. Or something like that.

41. I'm a Frog! - Mo Willems
Thoughts: Awwww.

42. Hive Monkey - Gareth L. Powell
Thoughts: Is anyone else singing this right now?

43. Burn Bright (Dark Star #2) - Bethany Frenette
Thoughts: Is that the girl from Delirium?

44. A Tale of Two Centuries (My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century #2)- Rachel Harris
Thoughts: Yuck. Entangled, you are really not impressing me with your efforts this week.

45. Between the Lives - Jessica Shirvington
Thoughts: Eh. Not sure if I like this one or not.

46. Leap of Faith - Jamie Blair
Thoughts: So they superimposed a ghost face over a boring contemporary romance cover. Brilliant.

47. Pity Isn't an Option - Jessica Brooks
Thoughts: Good for a self-pub, even if the fantasy bird does make me laugh.

48. The Glass Republic (The Skyscraper Throne #2) - Tom Pollock
Thoughts: The UK covers for this series are so much classier.

49. The Hazards of Skinny Dipping - Alyssa Rose Ivy
Thoughts: I usually hate Alyssa Rose Ivy's covers, but I actually kind of like this. Number one hazard? Sand ERRYWHERE.

50. Code Name 711 (Double Vision #2) - F.T. Bradley
Thoughts: I'm thinking of this.

Cover Battles

1. Prep School Confidential - Kara Taylor
Concept 1 vs. Concept 2 vs. Final Cover: I love when they share the cover design process like this. Sadly, I think the final one they went for is the one I like the least. The blank red background doesn't make much sense to me. Also, I'm not sure if I dislike the tagline or just the font its in. Winner: Concept 2, because that looks like a real prep school setting.

2. Small Town Girl - Linda Cunningham
Original vs. Redesign: Wow. I hate both of these. With regards to the new one, they sure do grow some beefy girls in this small town. Winner: I refuse.

3. Anna and the French Kiss - Stephanie Perkins
Original vs. Redesign: Of the two redesigned covers, I'm most torn on this one. The original definitely sent me running the other way, but I don't know that I would have been overly inclined to pick up the new one either. Also, can we ever have a book set in Paris without the Eiffel Tower visible on the cover? Winner: Meh. I don't know.

4. Lola and the Boy Next Door - Stephanie Perkins
Original vs. Redesign:Yes, the original IS super cutesy, but as cutesy goes I really like it. I like their style a lot, and that gives this one more appeal than bland cityscape and star for me. Winner: Original.

5. Walking Disaster (Beautiful Disaster #2) - Jamie McGuire
US vs. UK: Though I have zero interest in the book and generally hate naked muscle man covers, I can admit that the Walking Disaster cover is pretty cool. That butterfly is beautifully done. The butterfly on the UK cover? Not so much. Also, the note. *dies of laughing* Winner: US.

6. Double Clutch (Brenna Blixen #1) - Liz Reinhardt
Some Older Covers vs. Redesigned Cover: I really can't be bothered. Now there's a muscle dude and extra New Adult flair. She looks exactly like the singer girl from One Tree Hill. Winner: New Adult for its refusal to die, I guess.

7. A Face Like Glass - Frances Hardinge
US. vs. UK: Sorry new cover, you're not terrible, but I love the Tinkerbell vibe of the cover on the left. The colors are so pretty. Winner: US.

8. Burn Bright (Night Creatures #1) - Marianne de Pierres
Australia vs. US: *rejoices that this book is available in the US now* *looks at US cover* *returns to plotting how to get the Australian edition* Winner: Australia by a badass landslide.

9. Angel Arias (Night Creatures #2) - Marianne de Pierres
Australia vs. US: Seriously, why do the UK covers look like stereotypical self-pub vampire books? :( Winner: Australia

10. Shine Light (Night Creatures #3) - Marianne de Pierres
Australia vs. US: It's like they knew how bad they looked and thought, we can make this more awkward. Let's have the model hunch her head forward and then look over her shoulder. And throw some hair in her face. YES. The epitome of awkward. Winner: Australia. Look at it.

11. The Eternity Cure (Blood of Eden #2) - Julie Kagawa
US vs. UK: You know, when the redesign happened, I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about it, because the new cover is boring. However, now I know what it would have looked like, and I'm happy with the wallpaper cover. What is with all the purple? I don't remember the vampires having purple eyes, so there's no reason for this nonsense. Winner: US, I guess.

12. Spy Society - Robin Benway
US vs. UK: I hate those glasses. Like a lot. Winner: US.

13. Belladonna (The Secrets of the Eternal Rose #2) - Fiona Paul
Take 1 vs. Take 2: We all knew this was coming. Much as I wasn't hugely impressed with the Belladonna cover, I really don't care for the redesigns. This looks like some sort of spy thriller set in Florence. I just don't get historical from the style or content. Winner: Take 1.

14. The Neptune Project - Polly Holyoke
US vs. UK: While the UK cover isn't exactly good (WTF, trident?), anything is better than the unfortunate monstrosity that is the US cover.

WTF of the Week

1. Finding Valor (Magical Paranormal YA Romance #3) - Charlotte Abel
Thoughts: When titling your series is just too hard.

2. Embracing the Flames (Born in Flames #2) - Candace Knoebel
Thoughts: This pretty much sums up my thoughts on Firelight.

3. Armored Hearts - Melissa Turner Lee & Pauline Creeden
Thoughts: What does a steampunk woman with mime makeup and Icarus wings have to do with fairy lights and a wheel chair? Your guess is as good as mine.

Outstanding Cover of the Week:
Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Thanks for sharing the covers of Reality Boy and Vicious- I hadn't seen them yet! Also, someone rated Reality Boy 1 star on Goodreads with no review. Um WTF?

Anyway, agree with you on Entangled covers- I pretty much always thought it was self-pub whenever I saw one of their covers, then found out it was them.

Also, I want The Skyscraper Throne NOW, but there's no release date yet for US. Come on, Flux!

Between the Lines looks like a movie poster rather than a book cover. And THANK YOU for not liking the new Stephanie Perkins covers; I hate them. I loved the cutesy covers; I feel like they better reflect the content than these new ones, which are kinda bland. I feel like I saw an Isla cover in the vein of the old covers, like in Penguin's catalog or something but I could be making that up. I'm just glad I own copies of Anna and Lola with the old covers.

1. I'm pretty sure I can't tell one NA cover from the other nowadays.

2. I am sooooo disappointed by the new covers! They're pretty, but I thought that the original covers captured the perfect cheesy cuteness of the books. And I'm also slightly bitter about fact that there was a cover change at all.

6. Didn't you post this NA cover just a second ago? *scrolls back up*

15. Her pupils are rather dilated. What's she been smoking?

16. HEEEEEEEEEEEELL NAW. Why would you put a spider on the cover. NOPE.

20. The handle is there if you squint, although it's obviously a door to keep children out, because it's really freakin' high up. Love this cover! What are those weird blankets at the top, though?

25. This one reminds me of those Amanda Hocking books. Switched, etc etc.

30. The dog is probably going to die just to traumatise us.

33. This is getting silly. Have you considered proof reading so you don't post the same cover three times? XD

49. I like this one too, although I'm not a fan of the font. It just seems off to me.

I want the Aussie covers of the Night Creatures series so badly. They're so beautiful!

I hate how NA has gone the way of fifty shades; just because a book sold lots doesnt mean you have to copy its cover FOR ALL TIME. Great post, and lots of new books for me!

OMG, I hate that person who rated Reality Boy one star. I'm pretty sure only the editor and author have seen it at this point, so that's such a bullshit thing to do!

True, though they do have a couple of better covers. The Reece Malcolm List isn't too bad, and Gravity's gorgeous. They CAN do it. They mostly just don't.

I heard The City's Son is good. I initially had no interest because the US cover is AWFUL.

THANK YOU. Everyone loves them, but I feel like the new ones are still cheesy but in a bland way. So unfortunate.

I just recently discovered your feature and I don't even know why I haven't commented on it before because I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Seriously, this just made my day :) Now, I'll try to comment on all of them:

1. The tagline is... um. Well.

2. I adore the backgrounds on these new covers, but other than that they're kind of boring. They should have AT LEAST used a pretty font. This is so meh.

3. I have no idea what the book is about, but I like that it's different and I LOVE the color and the trees and the use of font. The face is a bit weird, but that's just how historical paintings are anyway.

4. He has trees on his face. That can't be good.

5. My ten-year-old brother would love it.

6. I seriously don't know ANYONE who kisses like that. It seems very uncomfortable.

7. I wish there were no people on this cover. I probably would have liked the computer look with the font and all that, but those PEOPLE make it so stupid.

8. I really like that one! It's kind of weird, but mostly DIFFERENT. Difference is good.

9. I HAD NOT SEEN THE FACE. That's creepy. But I LOVE this one. I love fonts, and the smoky one is great!

10. Is this book called "In the air, in the air"? I feel like she's going to fall. If it's a series, I don't want to see the second cover.

11. Looks interesting. (No.)

12. HAHAHAHA. (Your comment.) Wow. This is a lot.

13. HAHAHAHA. (Your comment.)

15. I didn't realize Photoshop was that hard to use.

16. I quite like the sparkly background and the circle and the red but WHY IS THERE A SPIDER? (Note: I have no idea what the book is about. I just don't like spiders.)

18. LOVE IT. Very cute, and I love the silhouettes and the colors.

19. *stares* *blinks* *stares* NEED. (I like the S&B cover better but I DON'T CARE.)

20. There are just too many books with wings, but I really like these! They're unique.

22. But... but... Alice in Zombieland was so pretty :( The model just looks REALLY weird.

23. I don't like the purple and blueish and yellow, BUT I do like the cover.

25. This needed a little more work and I would have LOVED it. The colors, the silhouette, the pretty swirly thingies. But it's just not there yet.

29. CREEPY. I love the font and the way it looks a whole lot. I don't want to see that hand ever.

31. HAHAHA. Just people in their natural habitat. I always hang from the ceiling too.

36. The only thing I like about this is how they used dark grey instead of black. But ugh, no. I thought she was wearing a jeans jacket at first, and that would have looked WEIRD.

38. I actually really like this one. It's weird. It's different. I like drawings.

40. This looks like a TV show. Or a movie for kids.

47. I really like the font! (Yes, I'm a font snob, if you hadn't noticed already.)

48. This I LOVE. It's simple, but classy.

On the Night Creature cover changes: WHY?! The new ones look horribly photoshopped (at least the girl does). The Australian covers look so UNIQUE. Well, kind of. They are pretty.

On the Eternity Cure: I actually LOVE the minimalistic look of the original one. The redesign is too meh for me.

On the WTF: THAT GIRL. She is on every cover. WHY?

Thank you for this. It made me laugh really hard.

1. They are all the damn same.

2. Yeah. I'm really curious what market they're going for, and about whether that market will actually like the books. I mean, I don't look at that cover and think "funny book."

6. Seriously, NA.

15. I wouldn't know, but something!

16. BAHAHAHAHAHA.

20. Ohhhhh! I see it now. I was looking where a handle would normally be. Silly me! Handles aren't in the middle of the doors anymore!

25. Oh, true.

30. Nooooooooooooooooooo!

33. I'm sorry. There are just so many that it's hard to remember!

49. I actually like the font. Though that might just be that I like the COLOR of the font.

I really like the US cover of The City's Son, but that's mainly cuz I quite enjoy seeing shirtless men, lol. I read the e-galley so the cover wasn't something I thought about really.

March 7, 2013 at 8:49 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Awww, thanks so much!

2. Yeah, it really just doesn't say cutesy teen book at all. :(

3. The face is exactly why I wonder if the teen market will be interested. But I love the style. It's a historical obviously. There's no blurb yet, though.

4. He probably hooked up with that girl from Snakeroot and caught the tree herpes.

6. I feel like you might do that if you were leaving and the other person was lying down, but it wouldn't be sexy. More sweet.

7. Yeah, if they'd gone for the computer it would be like the Insignia cover which I like.

10. I think it's just In the Air.

19. Same. This one's a bit more cutesy, but dammit still gorgeous.

20. It's like your average wing cover hooked up with The Forsaken.

22. REALLY weird.

29. The hand is seriously freaky!

47. I like the font as well, and the color palette.

I'm really not sure why Night Creatures looks like that here. I guess they weren't picked up by a press. I don't know.

It had to be redesigned because of the whitewashing. Looks like UK used an asian though maybe.

Hahaha, I have no idea why she's on all of the self-pubs.

Omfg. This is the best feature ever. Like really! I can see all the thought you put into it. Really was a great day to start my morning.

Your comment about the "Wayons brother in drag as a white woman apparently" had me laughing like crazy. I knew she looked familiar.

As for this NA kissing craze, I find it as tactic to forcefully shove a new genre onto readers. Those covers scream "Guess what. This book will have adult themes like sex". -.-

Thanks for sharing.

Ha! See, much as I love shirtless men in real life or movies (well, hello abs), I'm not a fan on book covers. I think it comes from a childhood of picking out romance novels by the covers for my mom. I also picked out wines by the label. I loved picking things.

Ohhhh, okay! It sucks that they couldn't do better than this though. Oh well. I hear the books are super awesome, though, and it's not like they're different under the crap covers.

Isla and the Happily Ever After: This definitely looks like an adult literary fiction. I think a lot of people will be confused by that.

Olivia Twisted: I am getting a heavy Katniss/Peeta vibe from these two.

Reconnaissance: The problem with covers like this is when something magical happens or you're playing Jumanji you are immediately in danger of encountering that spider live. Less spiders on covers, if you please. I do not need that kind of danger in my life.

Cruel Summer: I feel this cover could have benefited from the girl being dead.

CB Anna and the French Kiss: Oh! Oh! The Paris Wife! That one is definitely in Paris (for the most part) and there is nary a tower to be seen. But seriously, Paris has SO many landmarks, find a new one.

WTF Embracing the Flames: Is that Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling's love child?

All hail Leigh Bardugo's cover and its gorgeousness!!! Also, super sad about the Tessa Gratton book because I was looking forward to that one.

I feel like Entangled never has good covers. Just because you're an indie press doesn't mean you can't afford good designers - just look at Strange Chemistry!

Awww, thanks so much!

For real. Blythe is a genius for figuring that out!

If all the covers in a genre look the same, I'm going to look askance. That's all I'm saying.

1. I'm actually really excited for this book, but I must agree that every NA book looks the same! It's kind of annoying.

2. I love the cover changes, but I miss my purple haired Lola! I really hated the original Anna cover. It was way too cheesy!

6. I didn't even like the upside down kiss in Spiderman. :-/

13. LoL, so true!!

17. I agree! I hate how Harlequin has to make sure there is no doubt in your mind that it's their book, no matter if it looks out of place on the cover.

20. The door does have a handle...

22. I actually love this cover. I think it looks more interesting than the first book.

25. A lot of Entangled's covers are not that impressive, but I do love the books that I have read from them!

32. LoL! Yes! I actually just generally hate shirtless men covers.

37. One of my least favorite cover themes is the half cut off face. It's annoying, but I am excited about this series.

39. I love the colors!

41. Aw, cute! :D

Cover Wars
1. I can't decide if I like #1 or #2 better, but I do not like the final cover.

2. Yeah....why is there a man's arm on this cover?

3. I definitely prefer the redesign! I almost didn't read it, because of the cheesetastic cover. I'd be more attracted to the pink.

4. Original! I love Lola's purple hair! And the row houses!

5. Definitely the US version.

6. I like the original. I just like pink covers.

8. Australia! I hate this book though. Damn you pretty cover!
9. Australia again! I will not be reading it though.
10. Australia, duh! Again, not reading it.

WTF
2. That is kind of strange, yet intriguing...

Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking with that Gratton book. It's super unfortunate looking.

1. I will be watching this book. If the reviews are good I will check it out, but I fear that it's a trap.

2. Purple-haired Lola is awesome!

6. Nor did I. But at least there was a reason for it. Sort of.

17. I bet more people would pick this up if it didn't have the Harlequin symbol.

20. It's super high up. That's why I couldn't see it! That's not where door handles go!

22. O_O

37. Especially since it's supposed to allow for self-insertion. This is a dude on a cover for a book aimed at ladies. We don't need to self-insert.

1. Where in her prep school would she be in an all red room?

3. Yeah, I'm on the fence for this one.

"I know lots of people love these new covers because they're not as cutesy and that Stephanie Perkins loves them because she's all about settings, but I do not care for them. The cutesy covers seem like they fit the content, and this looks like an adult literary fiction novel, only with that lame flower added on to appeal to youths."

YES, YES, THANK YOU.
Also, lol @ The Lost Sun. I thought that one would have much more of an epic cover, 'cause I think that was supposed to be one of those hyped up titles? But the cover seems rather juvenile in comparison.

"This cover doesn't hold much appeal for me, but I can see young boys being ALL about this." True, true.

Ooooh, geez, I like that Stephen King cover.
(And yeah... what is with NA and all the kissing covers?!?!? But then again, I suppose that is most of the content...)

"So this cover really doesn't seem to fit with my idea of the contents at all, but I really don't care because LOOK AT IT. The title is a freaking dragon! That is awesome."
Am I the only one who doesn't like the cover too much?? I think the colors and the lines are a bit too much and don't go that well together -_- though I do like the dragon and attention to detail. I actually thought the color for the placeholder was better.

Also, yeah... No to all the Stephanie Perkins redesigns. And I'm surprised you didn't comment on the UK tagline for Walking Disaster lol. All the Burn Bright Australian covers are nicer. And DEFINITELY agree on Prep School Confidential! (And when they post about cover design changes and the process in general. Love that.) And yeah, Fiona Paul's novels... the redesign... *sigh*

You would think they would make it look less like a shitty self-pub anyway. Then again, Random House has a lot of fail covers.

Ah, you wanted the green? I did like the placeholder a lot too.

Oh, I may not have read the tagline. I was tired by that point. Haha.

That news story just flew through my head like that.

12. You KNOW she's thinking "What the hell?" or something like that from her expression. She's probably weirded out by the horse vs. crane battle.

14. Compare it to previous covers in the series and it looks AWFUL. The title font changed, she doesn't blend as well as she did in past covers, and it looks so half-assed. I honestly thought it was a fan-made cover that got mistaken for the real thing.

16. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK, IT'S A BIG SPIDER! -hides- (Sorry, severely arachnophobic.)

19. I like the cover, but darn it, I dislike this series. I'm the odd one out for not liking it. Grrr.

22. I look at her and all I think of is "quack". That's a duckface right there.

36. This cover and the cover for Eternal Starling barely even match. I am disappointed. Grr.

42. That monkey scares me.

43. GIMME GIMME. I like the colors and the first book was kind of fun, so gimme.

49. Exactly! Sex on the beach is a DRINK, not something you should actually do. You don't want sand there. Ever.

8-10. I was WAITING for you to see the new covers. Mwahahahaha. I loved the old ones so much and wanted them to carry over, but the author said the price of keeping the awesome Aussie covers was too much for her. I still wish the covers were better, though. I'll be getting these in ebook so I don't have to see the covers much. ;)

HILD is an awesome cover (I'm a history major too, haha)!!!

In the Air --- the girl looks dead to me. & why make it so hard to read the title of a book?!

Despite not being interested in the contents of ONE I love the cover! So pretty.

Omg, haha you nailed it on Zombie Glass. I was looking at her face and was all "why does it look weird... that expression looks familiar" LOL!

10. I figured out why I like this cover so much. Not only is it dancing, but the darkness and body position reminds me of Black Swan. That's what it is!

18. Love! The other day, I just saw the first book in this series on the shelf at work, and I loved that cover, too! I think middle graders will be really drawn to it.

29. This one creeps me out, but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to, so it gets an A+ from me.

34. All I can think of when I see this cover is this: http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Lifeguard-Street-Super-Chillers/dp/0671868349 My brain is a strange, strange place to be sometimes.

39. I actually really like this, but I do love bright colors :)

1. THANK YOU!! I am getting so sick of the face shot kissy covers. Yes, they are nice and romantic. But Every. Single. Cover. UGH!!! *rant over*

2. I liked the cute original covers. They screamed cute YA contemporary!

6. Throws the book due to kissy cover.

8. I kinda like the cover, but it seems like the broken thing is starting to be overdone lately too.

9. Dude, I'm loving that cover. I am a sucker for red though. The smoke affect is a bit much, but I still think it's pretty awesome and at least it's not the same as every other cover out there.

10. When I first saw this cover I thought the same thing. I was like, why is she dancing in the stairwell? The fading font bothers me a bit too.

12. There's a bit too much going on on that cover for me, and the girl looks horribly photoshopped in.

13. Hahaha!! Is she naked? That's just weird. Really, it's a pretty cover though, but I will most definitely not be reading it. I wanted to throw myself out of my second floor window reading the first one.

16. I will now have nightmares from seeing that cover. Spiders terrify me. Like to the point that I feel the creepy crawlies right now just from seeing that cover. *glares at you*

17. I really love that cover, but I agree that the Harlequin tag is a bit much. It takes away from the beauty of it.

18. That is a super fabulous cover. It looks so fun!!

19. I still need to read the first book, but that cover is awesome!! Dragon = Win!!

20. Odd, but I like it.

23. I kind of love it!! Black and purple and just pretty!

26. Wow, I really like that, but I think the authors name is a little big. I thought it was the title at first. Other than that, no complaints.

29. Now that is a cool cover.

30. I really like that cover. And I'm in total agreement about the dog.

33. Even though I am totally over the kissy covers and the b&w with color font, I really love this one. Maybe it's just the brightness and the varying shades of yellow/green. Either way, it's great.

41. OMG that is too cute!!

45. I kind of like the whole box effect.

49. I love the colors of the cover and even though it's kissy, at least it's not a head shot kissy one. I really like that cover.

Cover Battle

3 & 4. Why?! The originals were so cute!!

7. US cover is very pretty!!

8, 9 & 10. I really liked the originals. The new ones for US are just so common.

You have finally uncovered why that Through the Zombie Glass cover is bothering me so much — it IS the wayans brothers from White Girls. I knew I recognized that face. If that's what your cover model's face looks like after your makeup job, rethink your choices, cover people.

Love the UK vs. US cover analysis. Very scientific. :-) You know, I don't like the purple Eternity Cure cover, but at least they stopped whitewashing. The girl looks like the Allison I'm imagining (I mean, minus the grape bubblegum tint).

And oh oh oh OMG I can't wait for Parasite!! And Dr. Sleep!

I really love the Lemony Snicket book, as well as both versions of A Face Like Glass. Who is publishing the U.S. edition?

I'm interested in the New Adult category as a concept, but I'm not really interested in anything too graphically sexual. I wouldn't pick up a book with these types of steamy covers, and I don't think I'd want to be seen reading it. I don't care if 50 Shades of Gray is making publicly reading erotica/porn more socially acceptable.

Does this mean the pretty dresses and sunshine and camera glare and batshit crazy-looking guys are going away? Okay, okay, I know I'm getting carried away. But still!

4. I wanted this book before they changed the title, series title, and gave it this tragic fucking cover. I think he falls in the Batshit Crazy-Looking Guy category, too. *sigh* And Hild had me so excited... :-(

7. Yep

9. I sorta want to read this, but I never read The Shining. I don't want to either because pre-wreck Stephen King is a little bit to much for me now. I read him as a teen, but I don't like to go full horror anymore.

10. I'm tempted to push her for doing stupid shit like that. People don't pose like that unless there is a knife jammed in an abdomen involved.

11. It makes me think of mites, lice, or whatever nasty little bug it is that you find in feathers. *shudders*

12. And pregnant?

13. I just quit this series, and I still haven't gotten around to reading the first one. This cover is a hot mess.

14. I think her face doesn't quite line up with her head. Someone needs to learn about self-control with PhotoShop.

17. This is a bit cheesy if you ask me. I do want the kimono, though.

18. I like the stairs! And is that a sperm up top?

32. John Leguizamo should know better than to do romance covers.

38. Hooray! I already had this on my TBR! Now I just have to remember to buy it.

39. *barfs*

40. I like it, but I won't read it.

43. This is a terrible cover. I also demand a title change on behalf of Marianne de Pierres.

44. There was a time that I was crazy enough to have worn that outfit.

CB3 & 4. The originals were becoming dated. I don't care much for the new ones, but I understand the change.

CB7. I want them BOTH!

CB8-10. Hell to the NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! MAKE IT STOP!!! I can't buy books like that! I guess I'm going to keep paying 8 cadrillion dollars for international copies of this book. :-(

Omg I totally agree about all those NA covers! Bloody hell, not only is it embarrassing to take out because people on the train or wherever will just assume I'm reading an erotica, but it says NOTHING about the book - except that there's a hot guy and girl kissing. USELESS. Personally my favourite NA covers are Colleen Hoover's Hopeless and Katja Millay's The Sea of Tranquility (both versions of the covers for TSoT are gorgeous). I guess at least for Cora Carmack's Losing It, the kissing cover was relevant?

#9 oh god that is creepy to the max and the smoke makes it bloody hard to make out the title

#10 the cover is so pretty, so it's such a shame the title is so hard to read, as you said

#13 I like the lace on those Reaper Diaries covers (they're what snagged me in) but god I couldn't even get past the first few pages of book 1 it was horrible

#14 I generally like the Cassie Palmer covers but this is blech sorry. Background is pretty but the fonts totally ruin it

#16 I recoiled. I HATE spiders. So seeing a big fat spider on the cover of a book is anything but appealing

#17 YAY for a cover that looks relevant to the story!

#19 FUCK YES SIEGE AND STORM. THE COVER IS AMAZING! And trust me Christina, it matches the contents of the book PERFECTLY. I read S&S and then the cover was revealed and I was like holy shit, this is EXACTLY what the book is about

#22 I really like the covers of The White Rabbit Chronicles but what the shit is with the girl? I love her dress but her face UGH

#44 I actually LOVE this cover :3 I thought it really fits the story and I do love the colour scheme <3 the flourishes I found to be pretty and it really matches the first book D: But I can see it's not your thing haha

#45 I also love this :P a NA with no kissing! And I think it sort of conveys the story well?

Cover Battles:
#3 I don't mine the cover redesigns of Perkins' books. I think they each have their own appeal. Personally I prefer the newer, maturer covers. I hated how they used some font from Microsoft Word for the first cover of Anna.

#5 I like both covers - ok well the 1st one is prettier but I like how the 2nd matches the edition I have.

#8 Never heard of this series but god the Aussie covers win by a mile!

#11 Hrmmm is that the finished UK cover for The Eternity Cure? I think the Australian one is similar but it shows her face straight on like for The Immortal Rules. I prefer UK/Aussie here :P

#13 The first cover is so pretty :3 The 2nd one is just ew

5. Agreed. I sort of want to read it though.

6. Eugh.

7. LOL. Truth. This is pretty poor.

8. I sort of like it but something is off. Maybe the font?

9. You're crazy! This is unique and creepy and bloody and I love it.

10. I love how smoky and atmospheric this one is and it made me go look it up so that's something.

14. Cover model looks botoxed and photoshopped all to hell.

15. All of it. And beards like that? Douchey and not sexy.

16. THERE IS A WOLF SPIDER ON THAT COVER. WTF IS WRONG WITH THE COVER ARTIST? HELL TO THE NO.

17. Not only that but the costume is not historically accurate. Serious pet peeve of mine.

19. Yes, I love this. I love the dragon and I love the colors.

20. The door does have a handle! I like the wings too.

22. LOL Blythe totally nailed this.

24. I liked the first one, hated the second, but I do like this. Though all of these covers seem fairly low budget.

25. You know I really love the title font a lot? Just not on THIS cover.

30. I was concerned right away about the dog dying too. I am definitely reading this. Love the shade of green.

31. ROFL!

32. ROFL again!

37. But I've heard The Collector is awesome, so don't write it off just because the covers are yucky!

42. What in the fuck is this shit?

CB1. I like the grass one best.

CB7. Agreed I love the US cover as well though the UK cover is still attractive.

CB8. I agree. I am so glad they are available but I'm not a fan of these new covers.

The Losing It cover, while not all that impressive does at least have a stylistic flair to it. Easy at least had the tattoo relevant to the plot. But still, they're pretty boring. Every cover does not need to have kissing. This is why I hate NA. Step it up, guys, or I'm going to continue making fun of your genre, because right now it's not a freaking age classification.

9. Hmm, I didn't have problems with that actually.

13. I was planning to read it because I liked the cover, mostly due to the lace, but saw the reviews and skedaddled.

14. Yeah, I liked the others better than this one too. Her hair is weird. And the font's a bit cutesy.

16. Not a single person has liked the spider on the cover, so they've obviously effed up.

19. Oh really? I need to read THIS.

22. I liked the first one, but holy shit what is this.

44. No, it's really not my thing. The heads cut off, the baggy sweater, the fonts and the different kinds of swirlies...no.

45. This one's NA? Oh my.

CB3: But the new boring font is better?

5. True. It does match the US cover for BD.

17. Oh really? I'm not up on the historical costumes. That's sad.

20. As has been pointed out to me. Why is the handle so high up?

24. Agreed. And you know they're making money off of these, so why not spend more on the cover?

29. I wasn't super impressed with book one, because I didn't like the ultimate twist, but meh. I wonder what happens in this one...

37. Eh, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like them. I know Steph really liked The Collector, but I think it would annoy me.

38. Same.

47. Yeah, I'm not digging the title.

1. Me tooooo.

14. Right? What's up with that trident? I mean, really.

Since I actually have time, I will do a full-on comment for this one (rather than the shorter ones I usually have to resort to)...

2. See, I don't like her cutesy covers, but I agree this isn't right either. Conveys a totally wrong message.

4. The shadow, on his face...WTF is that?

7. Also, that quote at the bottom is super lame.

9. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I agree the font is a little weird, but the whole cover does remind me a lot of his other more recent releases (Full Dark No Stars especially)...has the same vibe.

10. I don't mind this cover but I do wish they hadn't written that twice...it would look 10x better without.

12. GAHHH HORRIBLE PHOTOSHOPPING.

15. You forgot his killer necklace! WOOOOO!

17. Agreed on all points, this is the prettiest one so far this week.

21. OMG THERE'S A NEW MIRA GRANT????

22. What's with the inane tagline?

24. This is an awesome cover. I don't even know what it's about but I'd totally read it.

26. Is this steampunk? Because this cover basically seems like it's saying, "HEY LOOK, I am all the steampunky things you could ever think of! All at once!"

28. LOL worst cat face ever.

32. Most awkward male cover model ever.

33. I feel like the font makes it look too self-pubby.

41. LOVE!

42. Nope, I'm thinking of the Bruno Mars video for The Lazy Song though.

I love both short and long comments. :)

2. This I understand. I imagine I'll be even more opinionated once I read them.

4. That's the tree herpes.

7. Most blurbs are lame, honestly.

9. I like when an author's books match a bit, even when they're not in a series!

15. Hahaha, it is pretty sweet.

21. Clearly, we are meant to be friends, because anyone who's that excited about a new Mira Grant book is a winner.

22. It's a line from Alice in Wonderland, aka a false marketing ploy.

26. Hahaha, sure is.

28. I think I've seen worse, but he is pretty awkward.

33. Huh. The font is my favorite. lol.

42. OMG, yes.
