KC and the Sunshine Chats (1): Goodreads Usage

Around the book blog world, there are a lot of awesome discussion post groups, like Book Girls Don’t Cry, They Vent or Reviewer’s Roundtable. The ironically named KC and the Sunshine Chats was born out of a wish to be part of the fun. However, we wanted to mix things up and instead of posting individual discussion posts, we’ll chat back and forth in one post, alternating which blog the post will appear on. We don’t have a set schedule for these, but will probably post one or two a month.

We do know the name is silly, but this is Kara and Christina and we are silly. :)

For our first chat, we're discussing our Goodreads usage.

CF: In reading other blogs, I’ve noticed that I use Goodreads rather differently than a lot of my blogger friends. A lot of people seem to like to keep their to-read shelf very small, the books they want to read ASAP, and not let it get too cluttered. I, on the other hand, use it to keep track of any and all books I come across that look interesting to me, because otherwise I will forget about them. What do you do, Kara?

KM: Same as you, mostly. I have about 2000 books on my TBR (I know so I shelve everything that looks interesting), but what I think I do that’s different than a lot of other people is that I shelve by state and country. I do this for me mostly but it has helped others. I like to know where I am reading because settings are so important to me. I also shelve by genre, and yes, I do have a shelf for authors who I feel do not deserve my money based on things they have said over the internet. That’s my right as a Goodreads user.

CF: If it makes you feel better, I have 3576 books on my to-read shelf as of this writing, and it goes up all the time! The fact that I literally can’t read them all before I die haunts me! X_X

KM. I know. I was actually going to mention that in my paragraph up there. I hate that I won’t read them all before I kick the bucket. Heh. But I just checked and I actually have 2212. You impress me, Christina! THough mine is climbing every day too.

CF: I totally don’t use the shelving power of GR all that much at all. For a while, I really tried, adding shelves for publisher and imprint, how I got the book, and some funny shelves. I ended up deleting almost all of that, just because I can’t remember to add stuff to them. Thus, it’s mostly just simple shelves for me, though I did build myself a fancy DNF shelf.

KM: Totally understand that. I’m sure I miss adding things to shelves ALL the time. I have a DNF shelf too. I wish I could do the funny shelves, but I’m just not that funny!! XD

CF: The shelves of Wendy and Steph never cease to impress me. They’re queens of book shelving. You are hilarious! I just couldn’t make it work retroactively, because I didn’t originally use GR that way. It’s just not a habit for me. I’ve never been huge into tagging in any social media, actually. I love looking at other people’s shelves though.

KM: Agreed. I love reading different Goodreads shelves of people who are great at it. I wish I could do that. There are so many Goodreads reviewers that I look up to for their creativity. I can be funny, but it’s spontaneous, so coming up with a funny shelf name is just not going to happen for me. I do the publisher tagging thing but I do that on the blog tags.

CF: Speaking of GR creativity, I love making new friends on there and especially reading people’s statuses. I prefer to comment on reviews on blogs mostly, because the comments are often overwhelming on GR, but I LOVE getting to see the status updates! So full of snark and unvarnished emotion!

KM: Haha, yeah. I haven’t been on Goodreads lately as much as I usually am because of DRAMA, but I still love to see what books people are reading and like their status updates. I love reading and liking reviews and I love the different reading topics that come up on my newsfeed. I’ve gotten into so many great discussions about books and publishing there.

CF: Ugh, the drama. It makes me sad. Like this:
I do love looking through my newsfeed most of the time, though! There are even users I’m not friends with whose statuses I love to see pop up regularly!

KM: So I have over 600 friends at the moment. One thing I wanted to mention is how much I utilize the top friends feature. If I didn’t use that, holy crap. I would never be able to see or follow anything. So if someone friends me, chances are unless their challenge question answer blew my mind, they are not going on my top friends right away. I have my newsfeed set to top friends and following otherwise I would just get lost. Heck, I’m lost most days anyway.

CF: That’s so funny. I used to use the Top Friends feature, but I don’t any more. I’ve gone to, for now anyway, the philosophy that if I’m not willing to look at their updates, I probably shouldn’t be friends with them. Plus, one of my favorite things to do with my GR friends is to decide whether I should actually read things, and Top Friends still show up in Friend reviews, and those people were skewing the average rating.

KM: You’re right. So right. But I feel guilty. I get like 5-10 friend requests a day and as long as they answer that damn question, I feel bad if I don’t accept them. As far as the ratings on the book pages go, I’ll look at the average and then see who rated it. That does make more work for me because of my guilt, but I’ll do it. Yeah, so I’m pretty much a pushover. LOL.

CF: Ha! I used to have a friend request question like that, but I changed it so that I have a bitchy statement in my profile about who I’ll accept. I get more follows than friend requests now. Actually, when I made my standards for friendship higher, I immediately got way more requests for friendship and new followers. Apparently, if you have high standards, people assume you’re smart and important!

KM: I have that same bitchy statement that no one ever listens to. I get follows too but mostly requests still. What are you doing that keeps them from requesting you? I need your secret recipe. Okay, that makes me sound like a bitch. I love new friends, but my Goodreads profile is getting out of control. So it’s a Catch-22, I guess. And that’s exactly what it is. The meaner you are, the more they want you. Hahaha!

CF: It must be my intimidating face. Not everyone has my scaring people off skills! Seriously, I give great bus face. If I’m on a bus with an empty seat next to me, no one sits there unless there are NO other empty seats. :-p

KM: I have NEVER heard the term ‘bus face.’ Probably because I haven’t ridden a bus since the 10th grade? Hahaha! And I’m pretty old guys. That was a looonnnggg time ago.

Okay, readers, now that we’re all off topic, tell us how you use Goodreads! Do you use shelves? Do you have to catch all the books or is it for books you’re reading in the next few months? Do you have a bitchy friend request statement on your profile and bus face?

For me, To-Read is strictly for books I own but haven't read yet. Books I don't own and haven't read are on Wishlist. It's important to keep these things separate ;-)

I put all books I'm interested in reading on a to-read list-I thought that was the point! I don't really use the feed much so I accept any friend requests I get although if they spam me with event invites, they're getting deleted-I hate that! It's a lot better though since I figured out how to change my preferences so that I don't get emailed about those invitations.

That's a creative system! I might copy it, except that I'm horrible at maintaining my shelves and it would take ages for me to go wishlist 3000 titles.

Ugh, event invites are the worst! I just got one this morning, so that person goes on my mental list. If I get another before I forget about this one, they are deleted. I don't get emailed about the event invites, but I still get the notification on Goodreads, and I HATE it.

That's how I use the to-read list, but I know a lot of people who only put books on their high priority list on there and like to keep their to-read very small.

I keep my to read shelf for book I know I will absolutely read, and I keep a maybe shelf for the things that just look interesting. I am also one of those people who keeps the potential reading lists small. I've never understood the people who have thousands of books on their to read list--that's not a to read list, that's a bookstore. You might as well wank into your local indie and stare at the shelves. :-)

Though I will say that I hate the GR rating system. I am someone who uses reviews to help me choose books, and I don't understand why GR had to make up their own rating system. 5-Great, 2-Good, 3-Okay, 2-Not Good, 1-Bad, is what a 5 star system means everywhere else in the world--even in school grades are, A, B, C, D, F--but Goodreads had to go and change it. Problem is some people actually follow the GR system, while others don't, and we are left with a hodgepodge in the 4,3 and 2 stars. :-/

Blogger Christina said...

You win for most hilarious typo. I don't think the local indie would appreciate people wanking into them, but I know what you mean. lol. Also, that's how my tbr gets so big: I go to bookstores and take pictures of books that look interesting on my cell and then add them later. X_X

Ah, yes, that's a good point about their rating system. Amazon skews it as well, but it makes sense because they want the ratings skewed up so people will buy more stuff. GR's is frustrating, and I follow their system, so my average rating is pretty low. My ratings on the blog are often quite different. All of my ratings two and below become 1s on GR.

I've only been on Goodreads for a few months, but so far I love it, if only because I now no longer have all the books I heard about and want to read written on easily-lost scraps of paper. I've got shelves set up for things I want to read that I know I can get at my library, things I know I own and still need to read, and things I'll have to either buy or get via interlibrary loan.

I haven't used the more social aspects of GR yet, and I'm still figuring out how I want to use shelves. I started off using a really limited number of shelves and have since expanded that a LOT, but I don't know how well I'll keep that up. I work as a cataloger at a library, so it makes me twitchy if I can't remember to consistently apply tags.

The one thing I really wish GR allowed people to do is assign half stars to things. I really, really want the ability to give something, say, 3.5 stars instead of having to decide between 3 or 4. I hate GR's definition of the ratings, so I mentally redefined them all as letter grades - 1=F, 2=D, etc. It made it easier for me to grade the stuff I don't like vs. the stuff that's so bad I'm surprised anyone agreed to print it/format it.

LOL love this chat! I shelve EVERYTHING I come across onto my TBR shelf on GR. I think I have about 800 now (you guys have me beat for sure!). I like knowing that I won't completely lose track of that one great recommendation that so-and-so mentioned.

As for friend requests, I don't think I have a message on there, but I only accept requests from people who are genuinely interested in sharing/reading reviews...not budding authors who want to promote their books to me. That's what my email is for.

I totally wish GR had half-star options for reviews though. That drives me crazy.

March 25, 2013 at 10:15 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Oh wow, only a few months! Welcome! This is why I have a huge list! I don't want to forget things that might interest me. I've thought about doing the list by what I can get at my library, but that would take me forever. Haha.

I love cataloging, and, yes, consistency is key. I couldn't maintain it, so I nixed my shelves, even though I wish I could have kept shelves like my "strong heroines" shelf going.

We ALL want half stars, but Goodreads has as good as said they won't be adding that functionality. They say it's because half stars will confuse people, but that doesn't make sense to me. I'm not sure why they're so set against it. Ah, yes, I follow GR's rating schema, but I know a lot of people don't. Consequently, my average rating tends to be a good deal lower than average.

Yes! Another I see it, I shelve it person! Join us on the Dark Side. We have cookies and a preponderance of books. Part of the reason Kara and I both have so many is we read really widely in genre and age group. I know April of Good Books and Good Wine has a billion books on her shelves too, because she does too.

I'm pretty hesitant to accept friend requests from authors at this point, especially since most five star everything. If I see too many five stars on books I read and know do not deserve more than a three, I'm like uh uh uh.

Yup. I wish that too, but I don't think it's happening. GR is seriously opposed to the idea.

Ahhh yeah. I wish I was that organized. I just look at my shelf of not read books and go eeny meeny miney moe. LOL. And I thought about fixing it so it was like that, but I am so far behind now that it would take days. :D

Blogger Kara_Malinczak said...

Agreed. Unwanted event invites, group invites, and friend requests that don't answer my challenge question and just want to collect friends *waves at some authors* are the most annoying things about Goodreads for me as well.

A big perk (and curse) of my job is that I see every single book that comes in. It's easy enough to catalog it, go to Goodreads, scan the barcode to add it to my "in-library" shelf, and move on. And it's helped curb my urge to stop and read a few pages here and there!

March 25, 2013 at 10:31 AM

Oh, that's nice! A very good system! Saves you extra searching later. I'd be so tempted to pull all the good books and read them before the patrons got them!

Oh man! I love this new feature! It's really fun.

I am terrible at using GoodReads for interactive reasons. I add people whose blogs I follow because we generally have the same taste in books. I love finding new books on GoodReads. I think that's probably the reason i started using it in the first place.

I don't create shelves because I just keep forgetting. I really want to know though. At least a DNF shelf. I've always wanted to do the 5 star, 4 star, etc. shelves too. And I'm with you guys on the funny shelves. I would love to have them, but I'm honestly not creative enough to do so.

I do not have a bitchy statement on my profile. I really want to do so now. Lol. And I kind of want to go through and weed out my friends list.

I was creeping through the above comments and I too HATE event invites. Oh my word. It kills me.

Love, love, this feature!

March 25, 2013 at 10:45 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Yay! I'm glad. :)

I love watching people interact on GR, but I'm a bit of a lurker. I do more actual commenting directly on people's blogs. Mostly, I use it to get advice on which books are worth my time by building up a friends list of people with similar taste in books.

Doing shelves for star ratings is a good idea, especially if you broke it down to allow for half stars. I'm probably too lazy at this point, but if I had less on there, I might try it!

Yeah, I went through and weeded my friends list fairly recently. If I couldn't remember ever interacting with the person, they were out. Also if they had more friends than books on their shelves, since a couple of those snuck through in the early days.

Event invites are the freaking worst. Does anyone actually like them?

March 25, 2013 at 10:48 AM
Blogger Katie said...

I have a bazillion GR friends, so I only look at my "top friends," which is only a few people. And I look at reviews on there if I'm interested in a book but unsure about it. And, no, I don't like getting invites for events. I used to send those out but decided they were irritating, so I don't do them anymore. lol

March 25, 2013 at 10:52 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Good call. I totes don't mind if people do a status update about their giveaway or whatever. That doesn't bother me at all, but I do not want a notification about it.

March 25, 2013 at 10:54 AM
Blogger Kara_Malinczak said...

LOL at that typo. That was brilliant.

Christina and I just add book after book to our lists. Anything we find. I wish I had had the forethought to have created a maybe shelf when I joined Goodreads, but alas, no. But meh, I'm actually okay with the way it works our for me. My tbr is super eclectic and I can just randomly pick when I am in the mood for something different.

That's so weird, you guys. I rate on Goodreads exactly the way I rate on the blog. On a 5 pt system. I guess I just don't pay attention to the words that go with each star.

March 25, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Blogger Kara_Malinczak said...

I really wish they would add half stars as well because every now and then I come across a book that really NEEDS a half star rating but I can't. Christina is right though. They've basically said never ever on that one.

March 25, 2013 at 11:02 AM
Blogger Kara_Malinczak said...

Yes..you're pretty much the same as me, Ashley. I shelve EVERYTHING I see. And that's why it's gotten out of hand. But it's fun when I go to pick something randomly to read though. I have so many pages to choose from!

I agree with you about only adding people who only want to share and read reviews. I've just added a challenge question as an extra step. If they can't be bothered to quickly answer that, I can't be bothered to add them. And I'm with Christina about authors. It pretty much goes like this. If you don't answer my challenge question, you aren't getting in. And if you have 25 books and 2500 friends, you're doing it wrong.

Mwahaha this made me laugh a bit too loudly at my desk. But anywho, I'm a tad obsessed with Goodreads. I shelve any book that peaks my interest (or has a pretty cover for that matter). My "covergasm" shelf is probably the only funny shelf that I have though. :(

I don't have a ton of friends on goodreads, but I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with me demanding a proper answer to my challenge question. I'm not bitchy about it; I just prefer to have actual "friends" on goodreads, not just people who are trying to boost up their stats.

March 25, 2013 at 11:07 AM
Blogger Ashley @ The Bibliophile's Corner said...

I also comment more on people's blogs.

Oh yes! I wish Goodreads had an option for half stars.

I definitely don't understand why people want more friends than books on GoodReads.

Ugh. I don't think anyone likes them.

March 25, 2013 at 11:10 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Covergasm sounds like an awesome shelf, though! I shelve anything that looks interesting, and if I look at one and see my friends hated it, I can purge it later.

Yup. If someone friends me without commenting, they will get denied, unless they're someone I personally know already. That way is totally logical. I only switched to the bitchy statement because I felt like a jerk refusing people who answered the question, but I want friends who are engaged and have somewhat similar reactions to books, as differentiated from taste in books.

March 25, 2013 at 11:11 AM
Blogger Kara_Malinczak said...

Thank you, Ashley! I couldn't live without my DNF shelf. Every couple of months I prune my friends list of people that no longer use the site. If I haven't interacted with them, I check their last logged on date and if it's been a few months, I delete. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I wish Goodreads gave us the option to block event invites. No one uses them correctly. I've never gotten ONE event to an actual real event.

If I could block invites, that would be FANTASTIC. Oh yeah, login date is a good one too. Mine's synced to Facebook, so I had to delete a bunch of people I know who created an account and never used it.

Login date! That's brilliant. I didn't think of that. I also hate that to edit your friends is such a pain in the arse. After you delete one, it defaults back to the home friend page. I want to delete more than one at a time.

Lots of good ideas here for how to use goodreads. I've used it for TBR, but I don't have nearly the number on that shelf that you do! Very impressive. I like the idea of a cover shelf. I hadn't thought about that! Off to rethink my goodreads' experience.

I really wish I used my shelves better. All I have is a TBR, a shelf for books I OWN, an EBOOK shelf an ARC shelf and a DNF shelf. It makes sense to me and feels really organized to me, but then I see Wendy and Steph's like you mention and I'm like HOLY CRAPBALLS I wish i had those shelving skills. I like to read everyone's shelf names too, this is why I sometimes waste an entire evening just randomly looking through GR. LOL. That place is a black pit for time I tell ya. For the friends I don't really have a system I guess. The one thing that always astounds me is how many people don't actually answer my friending question so those I just ignore. It annoys me.

For all other books I want to read, I have a 'might-read-one-day' shelf, where I put all books that interest me a little bit. I try to at least add the genre of the book as well, and I always add if it's an ARC so I remember that I absolutely have to review it.

Also, I like going barefoot as well. I do love clothes though, but the only shoes I get really excited about are knee high boots, because they're so nice for winter.

Haha, I thought I was the only one. I add everything that looks interesting, so I have a huge shelve with to-be-read books. I've made some practical shelves, because I can't come up with anything funny and I like practical things :p Like 'books I bought in x year' or 'owned books ntl'/'owned books' so I can keep track on how many books I have and how many I still need to read (overwhelming amount :p)

I recently - and I felt bad for a moment - deleted some friends on GR. They weren't active and we had nothing in common. In the beginning I accepted everyone, now I'm trying to be critical. I decided that I only want friends who have a similar taste.

Great discussion post! :D

The number of books I own and haven't read is definitely overwhelming. I have about 1300, and I think I've only read five hundred or so. Reviewing doesn't necessarily help, because I give away a lot of the copies when I'm done. Haha.

Yeah, I used to accept most anyone at the beginning. And, though I know I'm making the right choice, I do feel a momentary pang of guilt for rescinding friendship, though I mostly doubt people notice.

I definitely use the shelves, especially for some specific tags. Annoying heroine, boring love interest, multiple povs, male pov, kindle bought, and it has an awesome love triangle or not, plus the other basic stuff that categorize books by genre. And of course, that little shelf with all my unfinished books due to loss of interest and/or the book being horribad. Haha. I don't think having so many shelves that are SUPER detailed would work for me, though. I'd become insane just trying to find all those tags from a list of many, but like you, I do admire those who have such patience. And the creativity, of course. Can't forget that one.

On the other hand, when I get invites, I make sure that these people have the same interests and are intellectual enough to have decent book discussions (those are what I love the most!), although this stupid GR feature of having your FB friends added automatically when they join GR is totally annoying. Most of my friends from FB lurk for a day or two then don't come back —_— I may have to do some... friend spring cleaning soon.

Awesome feature as always. Looking forward to the next discussion!

Ha, I don't have an Authors Behaving Badly shelf just because my friends have that covered, and I'm too lazy. Plus, most of those books were ones I would never touch anyway.

So I was sneaky. Looking at my growing to-read shelf just made me so anxious (and I've only got a 1000 plus books on it compared to you guys) so I divvied it up according to what genre it is and now, my "to read" list itself has only about 35 books (or the ones I haven't sorted) but the majority of them have migrated to "to read fantasy" etc. I can now add books without feeling too guilty. And I will not even consider the fact that I will die before reading ALL THE BOOKS. I won't! I refuse to!

I tried to get those going, but I wasn't managing to be consistent, so I shelved my shelves. I love other people's shelves though!

Horribad! I love that term! *steals* I had like thirty and couldn't remember what they were. I do not know how Steph and Ashleigh do it.

Oh, you can turn the link to FB off. I left it on, but you can stop it if you play around in your settings.

Very clever! That does make it look smaller, and if you're craving a certain genre, it's easier to find something. Good call.

Probably wisest not to get too hung up on that fact. X_X

I actually changed it when Goodreads started with their UGB that says 'want to read' - I mass changed all of my books from my TBR to 'might-read-one-day' apart from those I already owned... And the amount of alcohol needed was immeasurable...

I try to keep everything that I've read or plan on reading in the next decade (I'm honest with myself on Goodreads about what I'll actually get around to reading most of the time) separated by genre, but that's about as far as it goes. I'd like to be smart and witty and funny with my shelves, but my dingy ass forgets to post reviews there sometimes. How the Hagia Sofia am I supposed to remember to play on the shelves if I can't even review?

I will say that I used Goodreads shelves, friends, and whatever a lot more before I started working All The Jobs. Now, I do well to pay attention to one or two books or people.

I'm trying to improve my use of shelves. That way when someone says they want a sports novel I don't have to search as hard. Or what's a good middle-grade. I use it to keep track of when I read books, whether they were galleys, whether they were audios, etc but I need to use the shelves more.

I felt bad for having over 300 books on my TBR list but you guys win by a boatload.

Goodreads is the best place to compare books and reviews. Blog are cool for discovery books but Goodreads lets you organize, keep track of other people's reviews and ultimately helps me choose books from both stores and libraries because I scan the barcode with my iPhone and see what all my wonderful friends are saying.

I'm trying to start shelving books, but I'm just too lazy and forgetful. There are tons of shelves I want to add but a lot of them make me seem bitchy. I definitely have to add all the books that interest me. I don't have a friend request question because I just use goodreads to be updated on all the people I follow. Your friend statement definitely scared me off, Christina! So I'm just following you.

I don't shelve anything. *coughwhohastimeforthat?!Ineedtogetbacktoreading!cough*

It appears I'm in the minority of people who don't want people to know how out of control my book obsession is and is uncomfortable with a 40+ book to-read list.
I'm not involved in Goodreads though, I think it's because I have too many friends I really don't care about so my front page is spammed. I really should use that top friend function. ARGH.

I guess its because I rarely read people's status updates on Goodreads that I think they don't read mine...I had these awkward moments when people "liked" that I was currently reading a certain book--but I hated the book. And then I rate the book maybe two stars, and then I imagine their disappointed expressions...

My general policy for accepting friends if whether they have more friends than books. And then if their taste is similar to mine.
At first I accepted everybody people I felt like I should be nice. But then it just got unwieldy.
CONFESSION: I rarely "decline" friend requests on Goodreads. I just let them sit there while I feel like little miss popular. "LOOK MOM, THIRTY ONE PEOPLE WANT TO BE MY FRIEND! I TOLD YOU I'M NOT ANTI-SOCIAL AND AM VERY MUCH LOVED!"
This is why I don't have a friend question. FRIEND REQUEST ME ALL YOU WANT, PEOPLE! I WILL JUST LET YOUR REQUEST FLOAT IN CYBERSPACE.

"So if someone friends me, chances are unless their challenge question answer blew my mind, they are not going on my top friends right away"
Reading that made me run to Goodreads to check the challenge question. Now I have to think of a mind-blowing response...

"Apparently, if you have high standards, people assume you’re smart and important!"
...hmmmm. *debates whether to put Nobel Prize winner in friend requirements*
Honestly, I didn't even see the long instruction manual you have in your about me box. *compares books* whew..71%

How the Hagia Sofia? Bahahahahaha. Oh, Kayla, you crack me up. Also, I forget to post them in they I schedule them for the wrong time or accidentally leave them in Draft, and then I'm like WHY NO ONE COMMENT ON MY REVIEW? Oh, right, I didn't even post it.

Right. Work really cuts into blogging time, which is lame.

Right. That would be very useful for book recommendation purposes. If only I'd thought of that when it was feasible to put it into play. Maybe some day I'll be motivated, but...*is daunted*

Yup, I use Goodreads to remember what to read, but I do more hunting for new books on blogs. If only I had internet on my phone I would do that too. I shop blind!

Blogger Christina said...

Ah, yes. I'm not bothered by bitchy shelves, though I've seen some that don't really make sense to me. Oh, yeah, my friend statement will do that. I just felt bad before when I had to deny perfectly nice people because they would skew my recommendations in the friend reviews, so I either need to be familiar with them or they need to have similar reactions to books. *shrugs*

That's pretty much why I have minimal shelves.

Hahah, I wear my book obsession proudly, but I know a few others who do it your way and think I'm insane, which may be true. Oh man, that would drive me crazy! I don't want that many friends.

Well, maybe they liked that you were reading it because they wanted to see you tear it apart? I'm pretty sure I've done that before, and I got likes on my statuses when I was reading Modelland. I doubt people were excited about how much I would love it.

Ah, at least you block those people! Is your mom swayed by this argument?

Ha, I used to have an easy question, but I had to accept too many people with nothing in common. I like Kara's requirement.

Bahahaha. :) Nice.

I love this new feature! Secret to shelving: I go through my entire shelving list for each book after I read it. If I add a new shelf (which isn't often because I already have too much... 3 pages worth, *dies*), I eventually go back to add other books to it. LOL. I really want to add month shelves next especially for my ARCs.

Also, Why doesn't GR make the Top Friends show up on the book page first?! It's so annoying to be capped at 200 and it only shows 5 star reviews first. UGH!

March 26, 2013 at 9:05 AM
Blogger Christina said...

THAT'S how it shows the order? I'd been trying to understand it's algorithm. I feel dumb now. That should have been obvious. X_X I wish ONLY top friends showed up in the friends' reviews. Then I could actually use that feature and not have to be such a bitch in declining. haha.

I do not have the motivation for awesome shelves: I was right.

So a couple of months ago I decided I wanted to be one of those people will shelves for stuff like books I own and books I think are awesome and books I think are terrible, etc. That lasted for all of 5 minutes. I am not made to be that awesome.

As for my to-read shelf I don't have nearly as many books. I am the worst at adding to-read books. Sometimes I add books sometimes I don't, but it doesn't really matter because I never actually check the list.

Yup, I complained about it in GR Feedbacks, but it kinda went ignored by the staff. Maybe because it didn't get enough activity? I don't know. But I'm tired of just seeing all the 5 star reviews from EVERYONE in my friends list. I have a Top Friends list for a reason.

Oh GoodReads. I recently clamped down on who I do and don't accept. I had a huge (for me) friends list of people I never talked to. So I did some house-keeping and now I actually TALK to like-minded readers there. I have a little more paring down to do, but yeah, I've been getting more "follow" requests than friend requests, thankfully.

(Also I've had quite a few GR stalkers - sending me friend requests time after time. I've had to block about 4 people because they were just spamming me. UGH. NO, people. That's weird AND creepy.)

Also, "bus face." AHAHAHA. That is AWESOME.

I don't use the "top friends" feature but now I'm thinking I might. And I do have some funny shelves (at least funny to me - my sense of humor is odd so some people may not get it,) and I'm adding ratings shelves since I don't do star ratings.

LOVE this feature. Keep it up, ladies, and DFTBA!

"Well, maybe they liked that you were reading it because they wanted to see you tear it apart"
I am pretty sure it was otherwise since the like was accompanied by a "I love that book!" comment. I remember it happened when I was "currently reading" Insurgent. Now I am hesitant to even update my Goodreads status.

I think a log to-read list will just make me depressed. "oh no...it's all hopelessssss...I can ever read them all...*cry cry cry*"

My mom is probably like "you have no friends, I see you holed in your room all day! Go out and play, you fattie!"
This is why grounding never worked for me as a kid. I LOVE BEING AT HOME. So my parents would kick me out of the house when I misbehaved. hmph.

LOL. The bus face must be the reason why I haven't worked up the courage to friend (though I do follow). :P

On Goodreads - I started off shelving every book that looks interesting/books I meant to read someday in 'to-read'. These days I have a 'maybe-read' for books I'm not too sure about but generally most books go into 'to-read'. I don't think I have any cool shelf names ('can't-believe-I-managed-to-finish' or 'mixed-feelings' probably don't count) but I try to shelf by genre at least.

BUS FACE! As you know, I need to work on my bus face because all kinds of random creeps sit next to me all of the time. You should totally make a video about bus face so people can experience it. Amirite?

Wait, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, goodreads!

I mostly use goodreads to keep track of what I read. I'm not sure why I don't post reviews on there, since I post them on my blog and Shelfari, but whatever. haha.

While we're on the subject of reviews, I do tend to read them on goodreads. I like looking at opinions that both are and are not the same as mine, just so I can see where everyone is coming from. I don't understand why people leave snarky comments when others disagree with them, as it's only an opinion, but that is neither here nor there.

Every once in awhile, I'll add a book to my "TBR" shelf so I can remember it, but generally, I just consult yours, Christina, because about 95% of the time, a book I add is on your shelf anyway. Thanks, buddy!

I wish I could remember to make up creative shelf names, as many I see when I'm looking at someone's profile make me giggle, but alas, my memory is made of fail.

The only time I feel bad about it is when people I'm actually friends with follow instead of friending, because my statement is intimidating. OOPS.

Yeah, I've had to block a few too. I'm like WHY DOES THIS MEAN SO MUCH TO YOU? Also, those people NEVER answer the challenge. If you care enough to keep asking why not freaking EXPLAIN yourself?

Wah wah. You're not the only one. I looked through my followers and found a few friends who I'd scared off, but I didn't recognize every name, so couldn't friend everyone.

Ha, I like "can't believe I managed to finish"!

Ummmm, no. I don't think I should do bus face in a video. Everyone will be scared of me and never come back!

I didn't post them on GR for a while either, just Shelfari and blog. Then I didn't post on Shelfari for a while. Now I do both again. *shrugs*

Nor do I understand the snarky comments. I've read reviews I thought were crap or that were factually wrong, but I just judge them and move on with my life. Why would I waste time yelling at them on the internet?

You're welcome. That's probably because ALL of the books are on my to-read shelf. Haha.

I wonder if fail memory is an INTJ thing. I don't think so, but I have the same issue.

Oh really interesting discussion, love this topic! Like you guys, I use Goodreads to keep track of any and every book I want to read. Your numbers made me feel loads better though, cause I was getting overwhelmed and my number is like 400-500. I actually skimmed through yesterday and removed some that I didn't remember anything about/were rated really shitty. I also definitely have TONS of different shelves too, some are kinda weird but they make sense to me...like 'magnetic-male' but others are just the genres, romance factor and hero awesomeness. I just need to attempt to make some kind of sense out of the clutter I guess >.<

Oh and I keep my friends list pretty low (like 100) - I only accept people who have 1. answered the challenge question( I even have a bitchy comment on my profile how I will automatically decline someone who doesn't answer it, if I don't know them) and 2. have compatible book tastes. I used to accept whoever but then I hated my newsfeed too much. I just want to love the books I see, from cool people and chat about it all. That way Goodreads is fun and I love it!
