Ten (errr...Six) Books I HAD to Have to Complete My Life, But Then Totally Failed to Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
Most readers I know have this problem. There are these books that you just HAVE to have. You beg your parents, your friends, your library, your publicity contacts, yourself for the book.

You come out VICTORIOUS. The book is now in your possession.

Then, suddenly, months have gone by and the book is still unread. You just put it aside while you read this one other thing for class/for your trip/for review, but somehow it's been shunted aside...and, ummm, yeah, oops.

Actually, it turns out this doesn't happen to me much. I looked through all of my bookshelves, and I only came up with six books, and half of those are from high school. Turns out that somewhere along the way, I got to know myself well enough to know that I probably wouldn't get around to reading the books I purchase for a while, so I might as well save money and pick it up used or in paperback.

1. Days of Blood and Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone #2) - Laini Taylor

This one I bought at the end of last year, promising it to myself as a present for having successfully completed my 2012 book challenge. It was supposed to be the first book I read in 2013. Ummm, yeah. It's not almost three months into 2013 and it's probably going to be a while longer before I have time for such a massive book that's not for review.

2. Bitterblue (Seven Kingdoms #3) - Kristin Cashore

I am a HUGE fan of both Graceling and Fire, and for like three years I would check freaking daily to see if publication information had been updated for Bitterblue yet. This book took forever to come out. I almost preordered it like ten times, but because I didn't have Amazon Prime at that point, I wouldn't have gotten the rest of my order until publication. I finally got a copy at BEA, which isn't technically buying it, but BEA is expensive to attend and I had trouble coming up with things, so deal with it. Anyway, still haven't read it, because I'm afraid I won't love it.

3. World Without End (Pillars of the Earth #2) - Ken Follett

Y'all, I straight up loved The Pillars of the Earth, and I still really like it, though not as much as my younger self did. I'm pretty sure I've read the 1000 page novel three times. When I heard there was a sequel, I knew that it had to be mine and soon. I called my dad from college junior year and PLEADED with him to please please please buy it for me. Of course he did, because he's a big softie. Guess what? It's been like five years and I still haven't read it.

4. Tai-Pan (Asian Saga #2) - James Clavell

Okay, so for a history class in high school we had to choose some fiction to read for a book report. This was basically my favorite assignment ever, because the list actually had awesome stuff on it. I read Catch-22 and Ishmael for the first time, and I also read Shogun by James Clavell. I loved all three, and Shogun actually kicked off my obsession with Asian culture. I immediately wanted more, so got my parents to buy me Tai-Pan. I think the fact that the characters were different threw me, though it could also have been the realization that it's technically the second book in the series and my sense of order demanded I read King Rat first, which I didn't have. Anyway, it's still on my shelves, patiently waiting.

5. The Nanny Diaries (The Nanny #1) - Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus

Honestly, I no longer recall why I wanted so badly to read this. I think it may have been because it was so popular for a brief time in the early 2000s. I'm not sure if I started and gave up for later because I was bored or if I'm just remembering how boring the movie version was. Since I begged my parents for it, I still have it and intend to get through it at some point.

6. Girl, Interrupted - Susanna Kaysen

Again, I have NO CLUE why I was so desperate for this book, but I remember arguing with my mom, convincing her that I just HAD to have it. This is weird on so many levels. I've never been a big nonfiction reader and I don't generally care for memoirs. Plus, though the mental institution stuff interests me now, past Christina was all about happy reads and romance. Perhaps it had something to do with the movie, but that doesn't really make sense either, since I've never seen it and I'm not a big Winona Ryder fan or anything. I just don't know, but it lives on my shelves to this day.

Of course, you guys can always help a girl out by adding these to my Sadie Hawkins list! Don't know what Sadie Hawkins is? Find out more here!

Enough about me, what books did you purchase because you desperately needed the book RIGHT NOW and then forget to read?

I know you are super busy but you MUST read World Without End if you loved Pillars of the Earth! It's fantastic; similar structure and awesome characters. And Bitterblue was everything I hoped it would be- when you finally get around to it, I hope you feel the same way!

As far as my books... I preordered The Casual Vacancy and still haven't read it. Not sure if I will either, I've heard such mixed reviews. I have lots of examples unfortunately but can't think of any others off the top of my head!

I never got around to the rest of James Clavell's books after Shogun. Should do something about that one of these days xD

Hope you enjoy World Without End!

Wow that is pretty good. I had more than 10 books I need to read haha. I remember getting The Nanny Diaries and not getting very far with it. Here is my TTT list on the Life & Times Blog.

Christina I'm also eagerly anticipating reading Days of Blood & Starlight, like you I've already got it but just haven't had the time, there are just so many fantastic books and so many series to get through and not enough time :(

My Top Ten

Have a great week!

I was afraid of reading Bitterblue as well. I had it for a year before I finally got the courage to open it. The good news? I LOVED IT. It's just as good as Graceling and Fire, and I cried three time reading it. It's good! Read it!

NOOOO, I have to berate you for #s 1 & 2. NOOOO. Christina!!
That's more or less the extent of my thought processes in reading those two little descriptions from you. I did the same for Bitterblue and even Days, which I finished reading way, way later than anticipated.
But noooo!! When you get any free time............

Just six? Lucky you. :)
I loved Graceling and Fire and read Bitterblue also and to me it did feel a little bit worse than these books, but it's not that bad. If Graceling was 5 Bitterblue was 4 - so give it a try. ;)
I read The Nanny Diaries and it's boring - the same as the movie. Thank god I borrowed that one from library. :)
I didn't know that there is a Girl, Interrupted book. I loved the movie but as you said I was much younger I don't know if I would enjoy it as much now.

As for me there are a LOT of books gathering virtual dust on my kindle. While I bought only physical books I was much more diligent in reading them, because I kept seeing them on my shelves. I may have just 5-6 unread physical books. But digital... I don't even now how many... But for my top ten list I pulled out some sequel to series that I eagerly awaited and then... didn't read them.

I love your realism - I'm always 100000% certain I can read all the books as soon as I get them. Which of course, unless I marry some mega-rich dude and become a lady of leisure and reading will never ever happen, and yet I still do it.

I actually read World Without End straight after The Pillars of the Earth. Yep, back-to-back *phew*.

I liked The Nanny Diaries the book. The movie was TERRIBLE.

Wow, I have so many books I do this with. Like, all the time. Pre-order the books and feel like I will die waiting for it, then it's here and it gets put aside. I don't even think I could narrow down the list. Well, maybe if I did it just books this year I could lol!

See, I actually WAS going to read World Without End right away, but I decided to reread Pillars, and then lacked the energy to get through another when I realized it was new characters after all. Whoops.

Yeah, I doubt I'll ever actually read that one. I like Rowling, but it sounded boring.

Same, though I'll probably start with King Rat.

Girl, Interrupted is an awesome movie (and I don't like Winona either). If nothing else, watch the movie, it's worth it. I've wanted the book for a while but yeah, I have no time to read it anytime soon.

Don't get me wrong: I have HUNDREDS of unread books, but I didn't buy them because I HAD TO HAVE THEM RIGHT NOW. Most of my books I picked up from Goodwill or on sale.

The Book Thief, Partials, Diviners, Brides of Rollrock Island and the copy of Crewel I got from your Dystopian August giveaway. >.<

I pined after them for so long but the urgency somehow faded sometime between the 2 weeks it took to be delivered over lol.

Just six I had every intention of reading as soon as I procured them, not just six that I own and haven't read.

That's good news!

Bleh, that's what I expect.

Oh geez. Kindle books. I get like all of those free Kindle downloads, but I almost never read them. Haha.

My realism = no guilt over the fact that I own like 700 books I've never read. I just accept this about myself. Oh man, I want one of those mega-rich dudes to finance my habit. Sigh.

I almost never preorder. I know this because I looked through my Amazon purchase history. I preordered like two books...and I read them. Maybe there would have been more if I looked at my dad's account.

Huh. Well, I guess I'll try to find the movie after I read the book a million years from now.

Hahahaha, that's okay. No need to rush. Also, sorry it took so long for Crewel to make it. I'm the worst about getting stuff shipped. I always do ship it, but it takes me a while to get up the motivation to brave the post office.

I'm with you on Bitterblue. So terrified it won't live up to my high expecations and I hate to end the series on that note. And I loved The Pillars of the Earth too! I only read it once (damn, that is a meaty book both is size and content) but would like to try it again as an adult (I liked your remark about maybe liking it better when younger.) I bought the sequel for my mom a few years back because she was the one who got me into Pillars and Ken Follett, but she hasn't finished it yet either. Hmm.

I can say without hesitation that Days of Blood and Starlight was incredible. Definitely worth the large page count (though I still haven't been able to pen a decent review.)

I'll have to step up and read Bitterblue at some point, when I feel emotionally ready.

See, with Pillars, I really like the characters, but I can recognize some weaknesses in his writing, particularly his sex scenes, which are pretty much the same in all of his books I've read, that I didn't notice as a young person.

I know it will be amazing. I just need some wiggle room in my schedule!

Of course it's better ;) I probably should stop telling myself that I will read something right away because it never works out that way.

Also - I really hate this google+ business and it really bothers me that somehow it showed up this way. Grrrrr.

This happened to me a lot more when I first started blogging compared to now. Like you, I guess I eventually learnt that I'm not going to get the books immediately and stopped buying them for immediate consumption.

Some of the ones on my pile include The Emerald Atlas, Firelight, Nevermore, The Book Thief... Too many!

I still need to read Smoke and Bone and Blood and Starlight, both of which are patiently waiting on my shelves. Oh Bitterblue is the best book in the series, you must read it soon! Oh Girl Interurupted is such a great book, that's full of brutal truths.

Happy Readings!

I'm impressed that you could only come up with six books! You have waaaayyyy more control than I do. Bright, shiny books always beckon to me -- at least until I get them home. Then, a lot of them just sit there waiting for me to get around to reading them. Gah! The guilt!

March 19, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Oh man, it's not that I have control; it's that I have self-awareness. I still buy the shinies, but fully knowing I won't be reading them for a long time. Haha, that's the distinction. I own hundreds (around 700) that I haven't read.
