Top Ten Book Boyfriends

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
It's a rare bookish lady that has never bemoaned the fact that real life men don't hold a candle to fictional ones, and, in this case, I am totally not are. These are the boys I would steal from the heroines if I could magic myself into the book. Sorry, fictional women.

1. Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

People like to say that every woman dreams of a Darcy, and, while I certainly wouldn't be unwilling to give that a go, my number one Austen man and dream book boyfriend is Henry Tilney. He's smart, loves to read, has a great sense of humor, and is a genuinely nice guy. Plus, I wouldn't feel too bad stealing him from Catherine, because I feel like I deserve him more. Shhhhh, leave me in my delusions.

2. Wolf from Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Ummm, hello. Wolf is delicious. He may not be the most honest and have a murky past, but...I want. I can't help picturing Scott Wolf from The 10th Kingdom, and that is a good thing. Of course, I wouldn't mind some Prince Kai either, but he's a bit too bland. Hot, though.

3. Trevor from Touching the Surface by Kimberly Sabatini

At first, Trevor's a bit of a jerk, but, once he opens up, he's just wonderful. I really love his sassy slogan t-shirts and how he only really shows his true self to the people who matter most to him. He's a marshmallow.

4. Owen from Enchanted, Inc. by Shanna Swendson

Owen is so freaking adorable, and, as much as I ship him with Katie, I would not mind having him for myself. He's sweet and shy and has glasses, and dark curls like Hugh Dancy.

5. George Emerson from A Room with a View by E.M. Forster

While at many occasions, I imagine dating George would be frustrating, it would be so worth it. He lives live wholly and passionately. He would push me to try new things, travel and learn with me. Also, this.

6. Fred from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Don't even talk to me about book seven, okay? I've always loved the twins, and Fred's always been my favorite one, for reasons I can't quite put into words. Also, how much fun would it be to go visit the Weasley's for holidays?

7. Gale from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Katniss didn't want him, so that means more for me. I loved Gale in the first couple books, and wasn't thrilled with his character arc, which really didn't make much sense to me. My fictional self can comfort his poor, injured heart.

8. Archer from Populazzi by Elise Allen

This one's a little bit off the wall, because I actually wasn't a huge fan of this book overall, but I really loved the love interest. He's into theater, dresses well, and completely hilarious.

9. Willem from Just One Day by Gayle Forman

I'm not counting this one as an official book boyfriend because I am under new disillusions about Willem's character. However, as much as I know it would be temporary, holy crap do I want to go to there.

Kdrama Boyfriend:
10. Kang Hyuk from Flower Boy Ramyun Shop

I could not resist throwing in a boy from a kdrama. He's another one that ends up unloved from a love triangle, and he was by far the better choice. Also, unlike much of this list, I wouldn't have to change ages when I became a fictional character. Main reason? This:

Okay, that's what I've got for Book Boyfriends...and one television boyfriend. How about you guys?

Okay, I freaking need to read Scarlet. WHY HAVEN'T I? Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. And I loved Archer! He was a seriously awesome character and definitely too good for that protagonist, although I did enjoy the book.

Oh, so many awesome choices!! I'm so happy to see Wolf show up on another list! I'm actually reading Touching the surface right now, and am just barely getting to know Trevor. I love his t-shirts too, though. :) And YES. GALE. Finally someone who understands he's better than Peeta. Great list!

What did you like about Gale? (I feel the need to clarify that that question is supposed to asked in a genuinely interested sounding voice, and not an aggressive Gale?-who'd-want-Gale sounding voice, and now I think maybe I'm overthinking this) I don't dislike Gale, but I definitely prefer Peeta. I think Gale makes a better friend. But obviously, that's my perspective and quirks talking.
Totally agree with your summation of Kai though. Hot, but bland. :-)

I'm a die-hard Darcy fan myself so you can have Henry Tilney for yourself. LOL I don't know why but Northanger Abbey left the worst impression on me from all Jane Austin books... Maybe because I read them when I was 15... I think it may be a time for a re-read. :)

I loved the twins from HP too!!! They were a little bit young for me but if I could make myself younger or them older I would definitely go for it. I love a good prankster. :D

I'm team Peeta myself and I would probably try to steal him also if not for age problem. Gale is prettier but Peeta can cook (pastries are one of my favorite food groups). Beauty fades, culinary skills last forever. :)

The rest of the books from your list I didn't read (yet) although you managed to push Scarlet up my tbr even more (if it is possible). I ADORED Scott Wolf from The 10th Kingdom so if this Wolf from Scarlet is like him, sign me in. :D

Fred is my twin of choice as well. I didn't really crush on anyone from Harry Potter, unless you count the small crush I had on Oliver Wood, but that didn't come until the movie. I was extremely disappointed he didn't have a big part in HP7.

I wasn't really invested in either Gale or Peeta until the last book, and that was because she totally RUINED Gale.

Hmmmm ok I'm a little slow this morning. The last sentence should read "...until the last book, where I decided on Peeta, because she totally RUINED Gale.

Well, I like that Gale is focused on survival. He's practical and intelligent. Also, physically, he's much more my type: tall and lean. Peeta never did anything for me. He was a little too focused on protecting Katniss; I feel like Gale respects her strength more.

Poor Kai. So cute; so boring.

Well, they're mostly a bit young for me. I'm assuming if I could magic myself into fiction, then I could also either age them or make myself younger.

BAHAHAHAHA. Best argument for Peeta ever.

Scarlet! He's not exactly like that Wolf, but similar enough that I couldn't not think of him!

And Fred and George are awesome too. I have to show this list to my sister. She would love it since the twins are her favorites and she's obsessed with Kpop & Kdramas.

Good point. Ok then you take Fred and I will George. :D

Thanks you. :D

Librarians are very wise. Mansfield Park lacks the wit that makes her other books sparkle. Fanny is the least proactive heroine in the book world, and she eventually marries her cousin, who totally wanted someone else. Just WHAT?

Well... I must admit I do completely agree with you on prefering tall and lean to short and stocky. But... I think both boys respected her skills, they just expressed it in slightly different ways. Throughout the books Peeta does recognise her skill at hunting, at survival, and her emotional strength, but he also recognises that the situation they're in is messed up and precarious and Katniss really does need help to get through, and sets himself to providing that help as best he can. Somewhat ineffectively, at times, but hey, he tried. And I was saying to another blogger that I always (and by always, I mean, since two weeks ago, when I FINALLY actually read the books) felt like Peeta is a better balance to Katniss than Gale is, that he draws out some of her better qualities, which is important in a relationship. I guess too, I keep on thinking about the quote where she's talking about how she's got enough fire of her own, and what she needs is hope, not more fire.

April 2, 2013 at 10:13 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Actually, I'm not necessarily disagreeing on Peeta being better for Katniss, but as a member of my imaginary book character harem it's Gale for sure. Peeta has a bit more patience and is willing to take more of a supporting role; I can certainly see Katniss and Gale being too similar to make a good couple.

In the end, I'm not sure if Peeta was exactly right for her, but I also don't think she could have left him since he went through all of that for her. It's tough.

Even if you are a rabid Peeta fan, that's fine. As long as you're not a rabid fangirl about an abusive guy, I don't mind!

I love that George Emerson is on this list! A Room with a View is one of my favourite books. One of my favourite quotes is “It is fate that I am here,' George persisted, 'but you can call it Italy if it makes you less unhappy.” Although he has faults (like everyone does) he is essentially a well intentioned person so I agree with him being on the list 100%.

I've never read Northanger Abbey but it is on my 'books I need to read' list. I've only gotten through Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion (I do have a thing for Captain Wentworth!) so far.

An interesting list. Thanks for sharing!

I knew I could trust your list at least. :)

Ron was always my favorite Weasley. Which is completely unoriginal but I can't help myself. Bill is my second favorite.

I like this list and how you actually have characters from older books too. Edmond Dantes from The Count of Monte Cristo and Peter from Dorothy Sayers books are two that come to mind for me.

I am still on the fence about Willem-I'm waiting until his book comes out to make a final decision on how crush worthy he is. I like Forman's male characters but not nearly as much as I like Melina Marchetta's. She is the ultimate at creating great contemporary male YA characters as far as I'm concerned.
