Cover Snark (70): The One with All the Cuttling

Welcome to Cover Snark, where the people are snarky and the covers quiver in fear. Since I don't write many snarky book reviews here on A Reader of Fictions, Cover Snark is my outlet. If you click on the title of the book, where possible, I've linked to Goodreads. Clicking on the cover itself will show you the cover in a larger size, in most cases. Feel free to love covers I hate and vice versa. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Shiny and New:

1. Liar, Liar (BFFs #1) - Dawn Pendleton
Thoughts: How about you make it clear what's the series title and what's the book title. For the life of me, this says that it's the first episode of Liar, Liar, which is clearly a big fat lie. Harrumph. In other news, it looks like they are practicing their synchronized swimming routine on the floor. Oooh, maybe it's synchronized mermaid dancing!

2. The Darkest Joy (The Darkest Joy #1) - Marata Eros
Thoughts: The Darkest Filter.

3. Second Chance Summer (Chance Series #1) - Emma Hart
Thoughts: What's with the vertical lines on here? I feel like I'm a parent looking out the vertical blinds onto the back deck and going SOON at this guy who has my daughter on the porch with no pants. Seriously, where are her pants?

4. Wicked Little Secrets (Prep School Confidential #2) - Kara Taylor
Thoughts: "Sometimes what you don't know can kill you." Like that handbag doesn't match that jacket. The fashion police are without mercy. Also, are those shoes required at this prep school? Seems weird both would choose them.

5. The Doctor - Jennifer Bull
Thoughts: I am really impressed with this self-pub cover. Look at the pretty colors! And the dream-haunting pumpkins! Also, if the tagline is talking about the pumpkins, then I certainly hope they do not make it out alive. *adds locks to whatever they are locked in*

6. The Broken (The Apostles #1) - Shelley Coriell
Thoughts: I feel like I've seen this cover before. The trees, the cracks, the huge bold author title font just seems so generic mystery.

7. The Fearless - Emma Pass
Thoughts: For reasons I cannot pinpoint, this makes me giggle. Maybe it's the purple? However, props for a girl wearing practical clothes for survival.

8. Edge of Eternity (The Century Trilogy #3) - Ken Follett
Thoughts: This cover is a montage. Also, I am bored.

9. Through Glass - Rebecca Ethington
Thoughts: This model is doing an excellent job of looking freaked the fuck out. Also, this cover is much more hilarious if you pretend there's no glass in the window and she's a mime caught in invisible glass of her own creation.

10. White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements #1) - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Thoughts: Now, I KNOW the world won't end if Armentrout has a cover without kissy faces because she has a series of swirly flowers. That was great. Let's do that again. Or anything but this. The red tint was a bad idea. It's like I'm looking at the cover through rose-colored glasses, but that doesn't have the effect pop culture promised.

11. Very Superstitious: Myths, Legends and Tales of Superstition - Georgina McBride, ed.
Thoughts: *pets the kitty*

12. Toxic Heart (Mystic City #2) - Theo Lawrence
Thoughts: Hmmm, not as pretty as the first cover, imo, and I find that tagline upsetting (also hard to read). However, props for a dude in a shirt.

13. Night Broken (Mercy Thompson #8) - Patricia Briggs
Thoughts: I wonder if they just reuse that Charlaine Harris tagline on each book in the series, rather than making her write another one. This might be the UK version, and I think I like it better than the US ones, though the title font and hugeness of the author name irritate.

14. Forty Nights (Neima’s Ark #2) - Stephanie Parent
Thoughts: There was a bird on the first cover. Also, an ark and a dude with this girl. Now there's just the girl. My theory: she sunk the ark, drowned the dude and ate the bird, feathers and all, minus the three that escaped. After forty days and nights of their company, she was just done, okay? HE HAD IT COMING.

15. The Lascar's Dagger - Glenda Larke
Thoughts: There are a lot of fantasy novels with this pose while holding a knife and with a hood up over the face. Weird.

16. Justice (The Tainted Realm #3) - Ian Irvine
Thoughts: It's always the proletariat that suffers in war. *shakes fist*

17. Unreap My Heart (The Reaper Series #2) - Kate Evangelista
Thoughts: Lol. Other words escape me, but lol.

18. Allure (The Hoodoo Apprentice #2) - Lea Nolan
Thoughts: Yeah, my summer could have been better, girl, but that doesn't mean you should go lie in corpse pose in the forest. Here, listen to this song. It helps.

19. Empress of the Night (Catherine #2) - Eva Stachniak
Thoughts: That is one fancy fan. I sort of wish we still carried fans like that around, useful both for keeping cool in the summer and whacking over-enthusiastic suitors of which I have many (okay, fine, I would just use it to whack Perseus - lightly - if he got to close to my food because he's the only man in my life right now). Also, have you heard there's a rumor in St. Petersburg? (what's that you say? wrong time period? don't care. *sings louder*)

20. Unbreathable - Hafsah Laziaf
Thoughts: Space is pretty. Also, I actually approve of this tagline because it tells me something about the book and not about every book that has ever been written ever in the world.

Cover Battles:

1. Altered (Altered #1) - Jennifer Rush

Hardback vs. Paperback: I'm going to be honest and say that I do not get this cover change. It's SO similar. Like, this does not appeal to a whole different market of readers. It's not like boys are going to be fooled by less of the half-naked dude being visible and buy this book. So it's just annoying people that their books won't match while appealing to the same audience. Though maybe I'm wrong. What say you, readers? Are you more likely to pick up the new cover?

2. Erased (Altered #2) - Jennifer Rush

ARC vs. Hardback: Still don't get it. I rather liked the way the font when sideways. Made the cover stand out.

3. Shadows of Asphodel - Karen Kincy

Original vs. Alternate: Pick your poison: graphic novely cover or paranormal romance of floating heads and birds. WHAT WILL YOU DO? Do you prefer anime or CW shows? You must decide.

4. The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds #1) - Alexandra Bracken

US vs. France vs. Australia Original vs Australia Redesign: Despite the weirdness of the symbol glowing on her stomach, I am all about this new Australian cover, which totally fits the book btw. The original Australian one looks like she has fire eyebrows in the small version. The French one will be haunting my nightmares. So thanks for that, France.

5. Never Fade (The Darkest Minds #2) - Alexandra Bracken

US vs. Australia: Personally, I'm still going with the Australian cover. Though I'm a bit tired of people covers, I don't mind it when they're set a bit further back, and random symbol doesn't really draw me in.

 6. Rags & Bones: New Twists on Timeless Tales - Melissa Marr & Tim Pratt, eds.

Take 1 vs. Take 2: TBH, I'm not sure what the deal is here. I think the US was going to use the cover on the right and the UK still might be, but I do not have time to puzzle that all out. Suffice it to say that I love this new cover. It's a very classic look for tales hearkening to classic stories.

7. Killing Sarai (In the Company of Killers #1) - J.A. Redmerski
Original vs. Redesign: Hmmm, I don't know that I have a strong preference between the two, though the second does remind of me Myra McEntire's Hourglass because of the way they've tilted it.

8. Reviving Izabel (In the Company of Killers #2) - J.A. Redmerski

Take 1 vs. Take 2: Bahahaha, the new cover. All I can think of is THIS.

 WTF of the Week:
WTF of the Week began as a special category for one cover I saw, but was so popular it became a recurring feature. Here, I highlight covers, both new and old, that I've found, which, upon viewing, made me either snort or say something along the lines of "Dear God, what is that thing?" If you would like to be part of the fun and have spotted a truly hilarious or horrifying cover, submit it and your snark to cynicalsapphire@gmail.com and you might be included, though I will filter through submissions and limit the number of entries per week.

1. Beyond Repair (Daddy's Girls #3) - Chelsea Camaron
Thoughts: Girl: "Working is so hard. Oh, hey, baby, nice spare tire you got there." Dude: "How you doing, Sugarcheeks? I saw you had a flat...inside of this building...so I unbuttoned the top of my overalls and came to help. Because verily I am a gentleman."

2. Earth Star (Earth Girl #2) - Janet Edwards
Thoughts: Okay, so, this cover. Looking at this, I'm assuming that this is a story about a daredevil clown in the 1980s or something. So no, Pyr. No. Unacceptable. Back to the drawing board. I mean, her (it's a her, right?) stupid costume has an arrow pointing to her butt. WHY? WHY IS THIS A THING? May I suggest you check out the UK covers which are truly fabulous?

3. Alien Smut Peddlers from the Future - Kent Hill
Thoughts: I submit this for your perusal and accept that people are way more into tentacles than I ever could have guessed.

4. Forbidden Destiny - Lia Michaels
Thoughts: The dudes on the cover are clearly feeling not worthy to share the cover space with this magnificent eagle, who I'm going to pretend is Buruu's cousin and has MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THEIR ROMANTIC RITUALS. This cover was spotted by Steph (Cuddlebuggery).

5. Someone to Cuttle - Luna Loupe
Thoughts: Thanks to Kat (The Aussie Zombie), you know know that Cuttlefish erotica is a thing. You are welcome. Cuttle them some slack, y'all.

Outstanding Cover of the Week:
Unbreathable by Hafsah Laziaf

From now on when I don't have a cover that jumps out of the crowd for me, I'm going to ask others to choose one and tell me why they love it. Today, Kara (Great Imaginations) chose the outstanding cover and here's why she picked Unbreathable:

"It's the Cover of the Week because it's gorgeous. First of all, it has a stunning night sky that immediately captures my attention. And then, how often do you see telescopes on book covers? It's like a nerd girl's dream. I love the colors, I love Earth as a focus, and I think it really captures the essence of the blurb. The only thing I am unsure about is the city in the background. But hopefully that will make sense in the context of the book. This is a cover that immediately makes me want to pick that book up and add it to my collection."

Not gonna lie, I kind of love Alien Smut Peddlers from the Future, mainly because I can't believe its actually a thing. Also, thanks to #13, the hook from that song Radioactive is stuck in my head. Finally, I don't understand WTF #5. Is that actually what a Cuttlefish looks like? Why is it glowing and stuck to his nipples? That seems slimy.

Well, you should go buy it then, Meg. It calls to you. I do not know this song. *hides* Also, I guess? *googles cuttlefish* Yup, that's what they look like. SHO IS.

Wonderfully funny, as always!

Toxic Hearts - Doesn't this cover kind of remind you of the Cassandra Clare series' covers? C'mon people! Let's get original!

Forty Nights - I think your theory is spot on with this one. But what came to my mind when you said "he had it coming" was actually this clip from Mel Brooks. I couldn't help but laugh!

Mila 2.0 - It's not just her collarbones... it's photoshop hell!

And I'm in total awe that cuttlefish erotica is a thing. I'm sort of morbidly curious...

5. Hee, I was thinking the tagline sounded like it was about the DEMON PUMPKINS. But that is an excellent self-pub cover.

7. That is such an awkward pose. Like she's peeing in the wilderness or something.

9. SHE'S IN A(IMAGINARY)GLASS CAGE OF EMOTION

10. That's a pink hot kiss.

14. HE ONLY HAD HIMSELF TO BLAAAAAME

16. That is a lot of large text on a small cover.

18. Worst. Summer. Ever. is just a disconnected tagline. It doesn't fit this airy fairy poutiness AT ALL.

20. HAVE YOU HEARD WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ON THE STREETS?! (I think we will watch this movie together. Oh yes, we will watch this movie)

CB2. WHY WOULD YOU COVER UP THE PRETTY ABS WHY

CB3. I pick the one that does not have Snape on it.

CB5. Ooh, I prefer the American one. It's more unique, and I like the icy feel.

WTF1. Yeah, that's porn.

WTF2. DAREDEVIL CLOWN I JUST CHOKED

WTF3. Why is there a secret contingent of tentaclephiles out there? To cause me nightmares?

WTF4. I'VE BEEN GIGGLING FOR FIVE STRAIGHT MINUTES BURUU IS FIERCELY DISAPPROVING OF THIS

WTF5. *is actually completely speechless for once in my life*

3. Title = NOPE. You cannot. And it looks like they ran out of ink when they tried to print the cover.

4. I think they're talking about the shoes. Those can be used to murder someone in their sleep.

5. A self pub REALLY?! Wow. I hate the font, but it's still really well done!

8. I've been bored for the last three covers.

9. BAHAHAHA. I actually quite like this cover, but now I just can't not see her as a mime.

10. Is this Jennifer L. Armentrout or J. Lynn though? Why does she keep confusing meeeeeee.

12. WHOA. A SHIRT. Also, this looks like a Cassandra Clare cover. The first was way better.

13. I think this looks fine, but WHY ruin it with the author font?! Sigh.

14. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME CHRISTINA NOW I WILL HAVE THAT SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS. Also, it looks like an Instagram filter.

15. Listen dude, if you're an assassin, DON'T SHOW US YOUR FACE. That's not how it works. Everyone knows that. Amature.

16. Meh. Too many things I don't like on one cover.

18. She's obviously pretending to be Bella, dumped by Edward and hiding in the woods, hoping for Jacob to come save her. Girl, that's so 2008.

19. Ew. I don't like this at all. I'm not a huge fan of the first, though, and it does match pretty well, so... *shrugs*

21. I'm mostly in love with this font.

CB 1 and 2. I do like the font treatment, but yeah. The first were more original. They're very similar, though.

3. One day we will walk outside and see a floating head hovering there. It will be terrifying. Damn cover designers.

4. I have no idea what this series is about but the original cover says high fantasy and the one below says dystopian/urban fantasy something. The first one is pretty but average. I like the one below! I want the French one to die.

5. Same: the first is pretty but boring. The second is pretty cool! I love the title on the wall stuff.

6. PRETTY FONT AND SWIRLY THINGS!

WTF 1. This cover is... no.

2. No to the slogan, but mostly: NO TO THE COSTUME. Girl, what were you thinking?!

5. AHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA.

3. You totally should have used your pic of Percy in the link for SOON. But YESSS, you nailed my reaction to it.

4. Their outfits are MINE MINE MINE.

9. One could almost say she's in a glass case of emotion!

10. Wow, Harlequin Teen didn't even fucking try. I AM DISAPPOINT. This looks like the cover for one of her NA novels, not a YA paranormal romance with demons and gargoyles.

11. *snuggles cat*

14. Girl, you win the day because CELL BLOCK TANGO. I have it on my iPod and it's one of my most-listened-to songs.

17. Words haven't escaped me~! There was once a blood-eyed, blindfolded beauty with a bird and her broody, black-loving boy-toy with a Rasputin-like air. He saw a smile and wanted to kill it, but she said, "Not right now, dear. You'll scare Mr. Tweetums away." Angry, he started to dissolve and go back to the Underworld so he could sulk like a motherfucker. Because yeah, her dude was a reaper. THE END. :D

WTF 4. The man on the right? Scares me. THOSE MUSCLES. THEY ARE UNNATURAL. KILL THEM.

WTF 5. Now we're censoring man-boobs too? And with cuttlefish? I approve of this! *gathers cuttlefish to censor shirtless college dudes with*

This week I am actually going to comment! I said I'd do that last week but meh, I think you'll just have to be okay with me sharing CS with my friends ;).

1. Why do you always have the best gifs? ALSO YES I WAS SO CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT WAS WHAT. I thought Liar, Liar was the series title and then saw it's the BFF series but then why are those words actually spelled out? Confuzzled. Also, I can't ever think of Liar, Liar without the requisite pants on fire, so while they've all got smooth, shaved legs, I'm thinking their futures can't be too bright.

4. Hey, if that's the fashion at the school, I'll take it. I WANT THOSE SHOES. I don't like stiletto types usually but they're just so pretty o.O. The skull purse freaks me out a little, but that's generally anything with skulls...

5. SELF-PUB? SUCH A GORGEOUS COVER. I lamented the fact that I didn't have the space to share this one in the last bookish rounds. Not just creepy dream pumpkins, but the entire atmosphere! The little mushroom clouds between the grungey tagline. Such a win.

6. Hmmm, would you rather have it portray a generic mystery or have it be inaccurate, like with dragons or something? (Unoriginal on my part, but sue me--dragons was the first thing I could think of!) Just curious :).

7. Maybe it's the hulking men by the destroyed car on the left? I really like the colors though... And her boots. So maybe instead of True Blood references this week, it's a shoe fetish on my part. Eh.

10. JLA has a bunch of kissy covers, but since this one's considered YA, I'm a tad surprised that they chose to go that route. The Lux & Covenant series haven't had one of those yet; only her NA titles, I think.

11. KITTY IS SO ADORABLE. I hope he's no one's familiar...

13. Maybe. I think I'd read on Margaret Atwood's website that she stopped giving blurbs because she'd started to sound very generic.

14. SO MUCH WIN FOR THE SONG.

15. But not all of them have a model who looks like Tom Cruise, no? Or maybe that's just me.

18. LIES. That song is beautiful but it doesn't help :(. THE SUMMER IS GONEEEE.

19. I think I'd be afraid to nudge my cat with the fan because he'd get his claws in it and it's so prettyyyy. ALSO THAT CLOAK. Can that be my winter blanket?

20. I generally really like her covers! She's a great designer. It made me sad that this was released too late for me to include in the latest bookish rounds. Also, yes. The tagline is really good.

CB 1 &2: I read on another comment that apparently e-books were selling better because people were ashamed to show they'd been reading a book with abs like that? I thought they were also going for a more sci-fi appeal, but honestly? The abs? The best part of the cover for me.

CB3: Alternate. What is this CW show resemblance you are referring to? I dun see it. PNR, yes (if only those faces weren't there!), but CW show? *puzzled*

CB4&5: Agreed. The symbol covers are a dime a dozen nowadays. It's nice what they did with the title font too.

WTF2: Lololol. I didn't even notice the arrow effect o.O. I do agree that the costume is weird. Such a small thing, too. The actual colors and font are gorgeous.

WTF3: .... This is because I told you about my friends laughing at the tentacles, isn't it? You forgot to warn me about this one o.O. I guess it's got no problem with feelz.

4: ......... Also what Ashleigh Paige said about the muscles. Eugh.

5. .. i am confused. I didn't know what a cuttlefish was and i still don't but literally with the mouth downturned like that, i am thinking of that fish snapping at a certain area o.O.

Also yes to Kara's explanation of Unbreathable!

5 - Oohh, this one has a nice creepy feel. Doesn't strike me as self-pubbed right away.

11 - Kitty! kittykittykittykitty.

14 - Seems like a solid theory.

18 - "Oh that log seems like a good place to drape myself on," said no one ever.

19 - I would totally annoy my dogs with that fancy fan too.

20 - I love the colors. And space. And the tagline.

CB 3 - I am going to have to go with the CW cover with the awful floating heads. I like the shiny font.

CB 4 - Those fiery eyebrows. My goodness, just get them tweezed, no need to burn them off.

WTF 4 - Hahahahah! Now imagine that bald eagle as the Aflac duck just staring us down.

WTF 5- Normally I am all for puns, but NOOOOOO.

2. They actually don't look that joyful.

3. Lol!! I know it's summer and all, but really, she should be wearing some shorts at least.

5. I certainly hope those pumpkins don't make it out alive. They are creepy.

10. It's so bright!!!

12. I like this cover. I think it's pretty!!

20. That is a pretty cool cover.

CB 3. I like the first one. I hate floating heads on covers. It's just weird to me.

CB 7. I like both. I think that the blood on her hand on the second one is kind of creepy, but cool.

CB 8. I like the original cover for this. The second one does nothing for me.

WTF 4. OMG what is going on with that cover? That's just... I have no words.

WTF 5. Hahaha!! That's so disturbing. Please, leave the poor cuttlefish alone!!

I agree with the Cover of the Week. That is a really great cover!

1. Okay, yeah, the whole title/series title thing is VERY misleading. Also, I wonder if there's a reason for them all wearing strapless tops?

2. For a second, I thought she was tugging on his hair, and I winced.

4. Meh. I like this cover way less than the first book.

7. The first thing I did was look at her shoes. Yep, they are appropriate! Props!

9. "Of course I'm not alone. There's a creepy looking mime pressing her hand to the invisible glass!"

10. His tattoo looks like it's about to take a chunk out of her shoulder.

11. Oh great, now I'm singing. Very superstitiooooooooooous... writing on the waaaaaaaaalllllll...

12. I think... I think I like his hair, though it would depend on how well washed/not crunchy it is.

17. HAHA! What is this? Why isn't it a WTF? Oh my gosh, this is awful. That blindfold. That stupid butterfly. His guyliner. That title. HIS FACIAL HAIR!

18. I like her little laced up sleeve/glove things.

19. Yeah, they look airbrushed. Also, the going-to-pieces effect seems a little more halfhearted this time.

CB3. I do like that they got rid of the stupid crop top, but that's about it.

CB7. I find her hair in #2 to be completely mesmerizing.

*Interlude* YOU QUOTED WESLEY!! I, no lie, woke up this morning with that monologue in my head this morning. I DO NOT KNOW WHY.

WTF2. This makes me very, very sad, because as you said, the UK covers are GORGEOUS.

WTF3. Wh... Alien smut peddlers... from the future??? What? Bizarro is right.

WTF4 and 5. That's it. I'm leaving now. Nope nope nope nope.

Yay, cover snark! Also, I'm finally back in my country and having time to comment on blogs instead of lurking for the past six months.

I have to agree with Kara on Unbreathable. I love galaxy-like photos so really, it's a no brainer that I would fall for a cover like that. So gorgeous!

Forbidden Destiny made me LOL and wow, I actually can't imagine anyone would want their book cover looking like THAT. The hawk was just... overkill. Toxic Heart somehow reminds me of Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices series. I think it's the background or something... But really, this post has more ridiculous covers than gorgeous ones. Which makes for a wonderfully amusing cover snark post. But the last book takes the cake for absurdity. Cuttlefish. Right.

17. Please feel free to continue disolving sir, as your eyes freak me the fuck out.

20. Oooooooo pretty. Would buy that on cover alone, for sure!

CB1&2. Not a fan of either. Same but different.

WTF2. Freaky clown thing TOTALLY unnecessary. Did some designer get bored with pretty landscapes and just decide to throw random peeps in?

Awesome cover snark as always! Regarding Erased and Altered, I'll give my opinion as a bookish guy.

Original Covers: This is the kind of book that people would stare at me for reading at the library. I kind of like the treeish branchy thing on his back and the vertical words.

Redesigns: The redesign isn't an improvement really. The title font style is covering up the awesome tree thing. The font is pretty cool, but it looks kind of out of place. Is it slightly more appealing to male readers? Nope. I'm not sure why they decided to redesign if they didn't change much?

3. LOL No pants. That's obviously what he's looking at. Plus, I love when blurbs are from people that they claim is an 'INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR' and I've never even heard of them.
12. The cover for Mystic City was AMAZING (the book, not so much) but yeah this isn't doing it for me. It also looks like he has flames coming out the back of his neck.
15. Yeah, I feel I've seen this a bajillion times before. Is originality running low?
