| Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. |
It's no surprise to anyone that I am making grabby hands at a number of the forthcoming debuts. Choosing just ten is tough, but here goes. Any debuts I've already read are excluded, because, much as I love most of them, these other books need love too.
1. Destiny, Rewritten by Kathryn Fitzmaurice: This book was already on my radar (hello, adorable middle grade cover with a LIBRARY) when Kayla Beck of Bibliophilia, Please told me she thought I would LOVE it. So, now I need it.
2. These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner: Spooner debuted last year, but this will be Amie Kaufman's first novel, so I'm counting it. It just sounds so good! Plus, I really enjoyed Spooner's debut and I love when authors team up.
3. Rump: The True Story of Rumplestiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff: I am such a sucker for fairy tales, and Rumplestiltskin has not been a popular pick. Very curious to see what Shurtliff will do with it!
4. The Wig in the Window by Kristen Kittscher: Smart, funny middle grade mystery with a Rear Window twist? Umm, how awesome does that sound? Also, the adorable cover isn't hurting anything.
5. Starglass by Phoebe North: The cover of this one disappoints me, but I heard from Lenore Appelhans, author of 2013 debut Level 2 that just happens to be out today (*cough cough*), that Starglass rocks, so it has jumped to my must-have list.
6. ACID by Emma Pass: Much as I crave every dystopian novel, some are more appealing than others. In most genres, I avoid blurbs, but with these they can really help me tell how much promise one has, mostly because you can tell if it seems like it might actually BE dystopian. This one sounds dark, violent and creepy. Heck yes!
7. The S-Word by Chelsea Pitcher: This sounds like a very honest contemporary novel, which is pretty much my favorite kind of contemporary. I'm also very curious about the fact that this YA novel is getting published by an adult imprint. Is it too steamy for the teen imprints or is this just one of those oddities of the publishing process?
8. How My Summer Went Up in Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski: Ever since I saw this cover, I have been desperate for this book. I love that her summer went up in LITERAL flames. She sets her boyfriend's car on fire! This probably should not be so incredibly appealing to me, but whatever. WANT.
9. Red by Alison Cherry: This may just be my most drooled over debut currently. Alison is hilarious on Twitter, and the book sounds very darkly funny. An author's twitter persona has burned me before, but I'll try one more time.
10. The End Games by T. Michael Martin: Look how awesome the cover is! *points* That caught my eye first, but the blurb makes me very curious to find out what's going on in this world.
Which 2013 debuts are you most excited for?
I have a copy of The S-Word and I'm so excited to read it. I love contemporary that deals with tougher stuff, and I really hope this one is done well. I also love the synopsis for How My Summer Went Up in Flames. The girl sounds...awesome haha.
ReplyDeleteDark contemporaries are my favorite right now. They are so good at delivering feels like a punch to the kidneys. So painful; so good.
DeleteDoesn't she sound awesome? At first I was like "meh, happy contemporary" and then I was like "is she holding a GASOLINE CAN?" and then I read the synopsis and was like "O_O MUST HAVE RIGHT NOW."
I'm really looking forward to THE WIG IN THE WINDOW and RUMP, too. Also DESTINY, REWRITTEN, just for the cover alone. RED, well, I haven't heard much about it, but being that I'm a red, well, you see where this is going.
ReplyDeleteAll of the middle grades! I'm so particular with middle grade books, but I've found I'm pretty good at picking out the ones that will work for me, so I expect all of those to be fantasmagorical. Also, I expect this from Red too!
DeleteI had lots of relevant things to say, but then Fassbender being cute distracted me. Anyway, you cracked me up with your comments on How My Summer Went Up in Flames -- why aren't you local?? Also, Rump is adorable for a Rumplestiltskin book altho the cover makes me think it is about to become a Pixar film.

DeleteHow have I read a book on this list? *baffled* Anyway, Rump is quite adorable and I generally quite pleased with how it was done. The ending wasn't quite as good as I was hoping but still, quite solid. And Rump himself is rather cute.

DeleteThe title of this most made me laugh. I'm really excited about some of these, too, especially STARGLASS and THESE BROKEN STARS - this seems to be the year of awesome sci-fi. :)

ReplyDeleteFor the moment, I'm doing my thing where I hide and peer warily at ACID. A lot of my friends are getting excited over it and I ain't moving a muscle toward it until people I know start getting to it. I'm thinking about Starglass because Phoebe is my friend and also fabulous, but I don't know. I'm just not a big sci-fi fan.

DeleteI love science fiction, and I got the go ahead that Starglass is awesome. I'm giving ACID the benefit of the doubt. We'll see!
So... How My Summer Went in Flames looks soooo interesting. I can't wait for the S-Word either, I want more contempt YA and this looks compelling.

ReplyDeleteI used to feel the same way about STARGLASS, but the cover keeps growing on me. I kinda like it now. It'll be pretty as a hardcover.

Ooh, which author's twitter persona burned you? Mine? Tahereh Mafi's? That's actually one reason I don't follow a lot of authors on twitter or a lot of author blogs. I have, however, followed Phoebe since long before she had a book deal and I know she's incredibly intelligent and hard-working, so I'm very interested to read her book. RED sounds really fun, and I'm now interested in the S-Word for the same reason you are, which I hadn't thought about before. The cover screams slightly-pretentious-literary-fiction to me, and I wonder why they're marketing it that way.
