Cover Snark (19)

Covers, covers, covers! I never get tired of them or of snarking about them. You guys ready? *climbs onto THRONE OF JUDGMENT* *gets comfortable* *waves scepter* Let's get started! Also, props are due to Giselle of Xpresso Reads, whose FB page was seriously helpful in finding this week's new covers.

Wicked Sense (Singularity #1) - Fabio Bueno
Thoughts: Fabio? Fabio Bueno? This HAS to be a nom de plume, right? Then again, why would that be your chosen name for righting? It would be so much better for porn. Ahem. Seriously, though, that means 'good Fabio.' However, this is not a romance novel, so who knows. For an indie, this is a fabulous cover. The fonts mark it indie, but the pictures are pretty.

The Key and the Flame (Untitled Series #1) - Claire M. Caterer
Thoughts: Decent middle grade cover. It's really just not popping for me. It may be how mellow and beige so much of it is. Meh.

Cover Battle: Marked (House of Night #1) - P.C. & Kristin Cast
Original vs. Redesign: Well, this is going to piss people off. We've got another midseries makeover. AND this one comes at book ten in the series. O_O As if reading the House of Night series wasn't punishment enough already. The original cover was weird, so I'm going with the new one for its vibrancy, even though it looks like an iPod commercial.

Cover Battle: Betrayed (House of Night #1) - P.C. & Kristin Cast
Original vs. Redesign: Yellow? Gross. That's no good. Besides, I think the older covers just scream post-Twilight vampire craze, so you know what you're getting when you grab one.

Cover Battle: Chosen (House of Night #1) - P.C. & Kristin Cast
Original vs. Redesign: Again, I always really hated this original cover, and they chose a good background color for the new one.

Cover Battle: Hidden (House of Night #1) - P.C. & Kristin Cast
Attempt 1 vs. Hardcover: So, I guess that, for the most part, I think this is a good recover. However, they're big dicks to do it NOW. This series was already enough of a money whore.

Dominion - Melody Manful
Thoughts: Manful? Seriously, what is with all of the porn names. Moving on, I kind of like this. Kind of. There are some definite issues (angel wings, the guy on the right looks exactly like a Ken doll, the two bloody handprints on an otherwise spotless dress), BUT the girl looks like Belle from Beauty and the Beast, so... that's awesome.

Iridescent (Ember #2) - Carol Oates
Thoughts: These covers are really amazing. Were this book and author not entirely unfamiliar to me, I might have thought this was from a big publisher. I really like the font treatment and colors. That said, I'm really grossed out by the moth on her shoulder. Also, what is her expression? Can anyone tell me?

Cover Battle: Mind Games/Sister Assassin - Kiersten White
US vs. UK: I am always curious about title changes from country to country. Why does this happen? What's the reasoning behind it? Well, I much prefer both the US title and cover. Woo! Doesn't the girl on the right look like Christina Ricci?

Infinite Sky - C. J.. Flood
Thoughts: I like this cover okay. The color's pretty and the barbed wire title adds a darkness to it that I like. HOWEVER, I was thinking a middle grade about CORN, but I read the description and the cover says NONE of that to me.

Cover Battle: Maid of Secrets - Jennifer McGowan
Mysterious Leaked Cover vs. Actual: Well, apparently, some trickster of a Goodreads librarian decided to post a pretend cover. The one I found last week is NOT the real cover of Maid of Secrets. Curious. Anyway, here's the actual cover, which...is still ugly. I think I don't like it because I just don't care for this model's face. She looks like an evil stepsister. Also, the one on the left must have been considered, because the knife, necklace and dress really look the same. I wonder if they went with a different one because that one was leaked and mocked? I choose neither as the winner. This doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to make an awesome cover for.

The Devil's Metal - Karina Halle
Thoughts: Now THIS is a fabulous indie cover. It would also make a stellar Florence vs. the Machine album cover, amiright?

Parched - Melanie Crowder
Thoughts: Am I the only one who finds this disappointing? The art style really just doesn't appeal to me. I also, if I didn't know better, would think this was from the 90s.

Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain #2) - Amanda Carlson
Thoughts: These are awesome UF covers. I love how hardcore the girl looks, but I also really appreciate that she's wearing clothing she could actually fight in, rather than a mini skirt or something.

Taken (The Watchers Trilogy # .5) - Karice Bolton
Thoughts: Why is a naked child happening? I don't care if it's an angel. This is still creepy. Is this about child bondage? UGH. Also, I say this all the time, but there's no way that a person of that size could fly with wings so puny.

Altered Souls (The Witch Avenue #2) - Karice Bolton
Thoughts: Well, this one I actually DO like. The creepy setting really works. Like that castle and the fog? Made of win. I am unconvinced of the practicality of that dress for what has surely been a hike to reach said creepy castle, but oh well.

Confessions of a Murder Suspect - James Patterson & Maxine Paetro
Thoughts: I just found this one. I like it, but I wish Patterson would stop with the YA. Oh well. This is going to be a new series, I think, because of course it is.

Cover Battle: Blood, She Read - Sara Hubbard VS. Eden's Root - Rachel Fisher
Thoughts: Usually, I fail to notice models are the same, but, with this one, I knew immediately that I'd seen this model before, and where. I want Eden's Root to be the best, because I saw it first and being second is lame, but I like the way they reddened up her hair on Blood, She Read. Plus, that looks so pretty set against the green.

Cover Battle: The Alchemy of Forever (Incarnation #1) - Avery Williams
Hardback vs. Paperback: This redesign needed to happen. The hardback cover is awful. The weird face she's making, the way she's pictured three times. It's just no good. Besides, it's also boring. This new one is so pretty. I really like the colors! Also, it looks like a contemporary romance, except that the font hints at some fantasy elements. Approve.

The Impossibility of Tomorrow (Incarnation #2) - Avery Williams
Thoughts: Matching the paperback cover, this is the cover for the sequel. I like the warm colors of the first one better, but this is still pretty. I guess she likes the boy now, since she's turned to face him.

Premeditated - Josin McQuein
Thoughts: Don't care. I just really have no interest in this cover at all. Her hair looks really dry.

Cover Battle: Speechless - Hannah Harrington
US vs. Australia: While there's something fascinating about the simplicity of the US cover, let's be honest, it's not as interesting. Also, duct tape.

Code (Virals #3) - Kathy & Brendan Reichs
Thoughts: What the hell is this? Don't get me wrong. This cover, in and of itself, is interesting. BUT designers for this cover, have you met the first two covers? Because you should! I even looked to see if this was a redesign, but it doesn't seem to be. WHY????

The Book of Broken Hearts - Sarah Ockler
Thoughts: Although the heart out of the book pages is cheesy as all get out, I really like this. What makes it work for me are the bright colors. I wouldn't expect that purple and yellow to dovetail so nicely, but their juxtaposition is a joy for the eyes.

The Different Girl - Gordon Dahlquist
Thoughts: YELLOW. This is not my favorite color. Her earring is a power button. Interesting. The cover definitely is eye-grabbing, and it did make me want to look up the book on GR, so good enough.

Nobody - Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Thoughts: *weeps in disappointment* That's it? Really? All of that lead up to the reveal and that's IT? This is boring and not particularly originaly. Plus, what is with the smoke in the bottom right corner? That really isn't adding to the cover.

Outstanding Cover of the Week:
The Devil's Metal - Karina Halle

Infinite Sky - C. J.. Flood: Maybe it's the illustration fan in me that is really liking this cover. Though yes, the corn has be for a lost. Maybe it's about farming in jail? Hmmmm....

The Alchemy of Forever (Incarnation #1) - Avery Williams: I'm liking the new text treatment, and the colors are lovely. A step up from the boringness of the original. Though I really hope that arrow will either be erased or moved to the other side. It makes me think her nostril/nose is awkward.

It's 4AM and I haven't slept yet, I'll get to the est later...or it'll be what I said last time.

Wicked Sense:
"Good Fabio to you" sounds like the next big salutation. And, if we skip on down the etymology trail, Fabio (variant of Fabius) means 'bean'. So, he's an all-around good bean. Also, she is VERY pensive.

House of Night:
The Marked redesign looks like she's listening for something. Though, she also seems to be in a club, so maybe she can't hear her dance partners.

In the redesign of Betrayed, the icky yellow one. Is she having a spasm? She looks like she's spasming.

Dominion:
A katana? Really? The cover is okay, I do really like her but the guys are very DeviantArt.com.

Iridescent:
I have a feeling her expression would be exactly the same if the moth/butterfly were a black widow spider. "Don't move, don't move, don't move, maybe it will go away."

Mind Games/Sister Assassin:
I actually prefer the UK, it's Edward Gorey-esque.

Maid Secrets:
Neither is very good but the actual cover model is worse. She looks like an evil twin to Lucy from Chronicles of Narnia.

Parched:
90s children's picture book...about the Dust Bowl.

Altered Souls:
The dress is very impractical but I think the flowers in her hair stand out as the most incongruous element. Did she stop to weave a flower crown? And where did she get the flowers? That place looks pretty barren...and OMG, are those CANDLES sitting in that rock crevice???

Confessions of a Murder Suspect:
Taglines...sheesh. Rhetorical question taglines are even worse.

The Alchemy of Forever (Hardback):
BANGS.

Speechless:
I really like the model, particularly her eyes which are, perhaps, emphasized by the fact that we cannot see her mouth.

Code:
I don't even. Wah-wah.

I'm pretty sure "Fabio Bueno" is supposed to be a pen name for a writer of erotica. I'm not 100% sure about the Spanish, but the corresponding Italian slang expression would mean "hot Fabio".

I think covers get changed from country to country according to what local publishers think will be more appealing and/or easily marketable to their readers. Last month I wanted to buy the Italian version of Clockwork Angel, which is now out in paperback and on sale, as well as Clockwork Prince (but that's still hardcover, too expensive). In the end, I dislike the covers so much that I've decided to boycott them. I'm going to support CC (not that she needs it) by requesting her books from the library often enough that they'll have to keep her books on the shelf. IMHO the Italian publisher couldn't get the right to use the original cover artwork (or maybe wouldn't pay extra for it).
See what the Italian covers look like

Omg they DO look like iPod advertisements! Lol! I honestly don't care for the old or new ones. Nothing that really impresses me this week, although I do like the Australian cover for Speechless.

Lots of...interesting covers this week, haha. Thanks for sharing! The Devil's Metal looks awesome! And I've never read House of Night (don't plan to), but the redesign looks a little less cheesy at least.

So THAT'S what Christina Ricci is doing nowadays.

Melody Manful - bwhahahaha!

I like the cover of Infinite Sky - not a girl in a dress in sight, but I want to take that knife and, well you know, on the girl of the cover of Maid of Secrets - she's damn scary!

I can't decide which cover of Speechless I like more - I'm all for the simplicity, but it's kinda easy to overlook.

Wow. I can't believe they are changing House of Night at this point. Stuff like this makes me so angry. Yet, now I feel slightly more justified in having stopped reading the series...I know I gave up after you did, but there have been two books out since then, and I always feel really proud passing them by, like when I pass the ice cream at the grocery store, proud! And I liked the old covers better. New covers are just trying too hard. Simpler was better for me. Favorite cover in this lot: The Book of Broken Hears! It is cheesy, but I don't care! Just love.

Infinite Sky: I just don't know what it's about. Africa...and things. I just didn't get the cover from any of it.

Alchemy of Forever: Very good change. OH. Oops. I need to fix that. The arrows are my bad. The only large image of them I could find was on fb and they were stuck together, so I cropped and fb's picture arrows snuck in without me noticing. FIXED now, though. *shakes fist at fb*

Wicked Sense: She is SO pensive. Reminds me of Natalie Portman. What a good bean he was, his tombstone will say.

Marked: She's listening to her iPod, obviously. Because that's where the idea for this redesign must have come from.

Betrayed: I really don't know what's happening with any of that. Also, why yellow?

Dominion: the whole thing is pretty DeviantArt tbh. The guy on the right cracks me up EVERY time.

Iridescent: *shudders* That moth is creepy as hell, so I don't blame her.

Mind Games: *googles Edward Gorey* Hmmm. Interesting.

Maid of Secrets: I'm pretty sure it's the same cover model, but her face is just upsetting. AND OMG YOU ARE SO RIGHT. EVIL LUCY AS A TEEN. AHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Parched: That is it precisely. The kid's version of The Grapes of Wrath.

Altered Souls: I did wonder about the flower chain. And I was trying to see if she had her floral crown in the first cover, and she didn't. Where DID it come from? Also, I think her hair got less straight. Odd. AND I THINK THOSE ARE CANDLES. I saw that and thought I was imagining things, but now I know I'm not. What are they doing there? Is she using them for a torch? Occult rite? What?

Confessions: Oh man, I missed that one at first. Ugh. Tag lines are awesome in about one percent of book covers.

Alchemy of Forever: BANGS!

Speechless: Yeah, I also like that the model looks like a real girl. She's not like every other willowy cover model.

Code: Seriously, what happened here?

That's what I would think too, BUT this is his first book AND it's YA. O_O The name sounds like a joke! His name must just be unfortunate. If Fabio finds this post, I'm sorry. A little bit.

Those covers are so WEIRD! Why does everyone have three scratches down their faces? Are those supposed to be the sigils? I just...eh. I like them better than the US TMI covers, because those look like romance novels, but they're not great at all.

Yeah,I don't love either set of covers. Still, I'm glad none of them are very gorgeous, because we need to minimize the number of people that suffer through them. Too bad!

DO NOT READ THE HOUSE OF NIGHT BOOKS! I read the first five or six and I don't know WHY, because I didn't like them. UGH!

This was not the best week for covers. Haha.

Awww, thanks, I do try.

The show about stewardesses in the 60s didn't make it, so she had some time on her hands.

Glad I'm not the only one snickering at people's names. It may make me a jerk, but I'm just trying to stay healthy (laughter's the best medicine, right?)

She IS horrifying. Steena pointed out that she looks like Lucy from Narnia, who I've never liked. No wonder she haunts me.

That's exactly how I feel about Speechless.

The Book of Broken Hearts was my second favorite this week! It's a bit cheesy, but I really do like it!

They're seriously being jerks to change the covers in a series 10 books in. Just WHY?

Don't be sorry, Christina! Even I have had misgivings about this name. But my only excuse is: it's my real name :)
*waiting for jaws to drop*
...
*jaws properly picked up and reattached*
It's true. I even asked many of my writer friends if I should use a pen name, but they all told me to keep my real name. The lesson, as always: don't trust writers :)
At least this explains people snickering and asking me if I'm a model when I give them my credit card (I used to be so flattered!). And the baristas love to shout my name and giggle. I've always wondered why...
I don't know Spanish or Italian, but I like the new nicknames--well, they aren't worse than the original name.
Now, please excuse me while I stuck my head in the oven.
(I hope I'm not overstepping any boundaries by commenting here. This is fun! I've had a laugh. The ironic thing is that fans of snark usually like the novel. Oh, well.)

Welcome Fabio!

That answers one of my burning questions. I always wonder when I see crazy author names whether they're real or not, and now I know! On the plus side, your name is very memorable!

Yeah, that model from the 80s really did a number on your name. How rude!

You're not overstepping boundaries! I welcome comments from authors, as long as they're not mad at me. :) Because you're such stand up guy, I marked your book to-read on GR, so maybe some day I'll find out if snarky folks like your book.

The poses are pretty ridiculous. I like the new covers okay, but I don't think they tell the reader what the series is like as well.

They're really great indie covers!

Anyway, I don't know why, but the new covers look like they're trying to revive Disco. Of course, the old ones were even worse. ;P

Parched: Looks like something you'd find in the dentist's office. Right beside all those back issues of Highlights.

Btw - I like how Fabio has a good sense of humor and just rolled with the teasing :D <3

I guess you've had the misfortune to read some House of Night books. :-p

I like the old ones because they tell you exactly what kind of cheesy awful stuff to expect inside.

Right? I'm on the blog tour for his book, because he was nice. Made me want to take a chance.
