Top Ten Books of 2012

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
Gahhhh, I can't. I've read 351 books so far this year, and I'm really not sure how to choose just 10 of them. :( Oh well, here's an incomplete list of my 2012 favorites. For an exhaustive list of loves, check back in a couple of weeks, assuming I stop being horrified at the prospect and get that post done. Even so, I've broken this down into my favorites for genre and age group. It's way more than ten, but you'll just have to deal with it.

1: Contemporary

2: Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic

3: Fantasy

4: Science Fiction

5: Humor

6: Historical

7: Fairy Tales

8: Paranormal

9: Audiobook

10: Nonfiction

Ah, Gilt is on here. I have that in my priority for 2013 pile. Also Diviners, which I just received today.

So many people loved Wonder. I'm on the waiting list behind like a million other people at my library, but I can't wait for it to finally be my turn.

You know how I felt about TFiOS. But it does get extra points for having an unexpected (relatively) ending and making me ugly-cry for days.

Ooh This Is Not A Test is SOOO GOOD! And I've heard so much goo things about Wonder I really want to check it out. Carnival of Souls, too! Oh, and Ironskin. Though I'm a bit iffy on that one since it's steampunk and all. Plus, Jane Eyre *shudders*. Yeah ok maybe not for me. Umm.... The Diviners rocked! And it gave me arm muscle! Croak sounds awesome too I love reaper stories and I hear it's funny! Basically, everything here I Wanna read! Except Stormdancer *runs away in terror*

I own 12 of those books, and I've only read The Diviners. I really need to work on my library TBR. {shame}

Yay! Good things!

Wonder is WONDERful. For real, it is one of the best examples of how to do multiple points of view. Just wow.

I do know how you felt about TFIOS. The books where the writing speaks straight to my soul you spurn. *weeps*

Yes, yes it is.

Wonder is amazing!

Carnival of Souls was so good on audio. *sighs*

RUN AWAY from Ironskin, Giselle. You will probably hate its face. Its iron-covered face.

The Diviners for sure.

Dude, you would LOVE Croak, I think.

Oooh you liked Croak? I have been wondering about that one, but I saw some reviews that said the MC was a terrible twit. I'll have to pick it up! It's so shiny!

This is Not A Test is definitely one of my top 10 reads of the year too! Love the topic this week. Thanks for sharing!

Whaaaaat? Twit is not a word I would use to describe her. Lex can be a bit of a bitch, but she's not twit-like.

TINAT rocked everyone's socks!

Wow, what a great list (although it means my toppling TBR is growing again!)! You've got me in great company, and to be included in best humor is is such a huge honor. Thank you, Christina!

Okay I thought *i* read a lot...but you've almost tripled what I've read so far this year! :D

I also haven't read a single book that you have on this list...I feel so far behind. I want to read everything in your fairy tale and paranormal categories! :D The Diviners is on my "must read" list for 2013--I just finished up the Gemma Doyle trilogy at the beginning of the month, and I just must have MORE Libba Bray NOW NOW NOW! :D

wonderful list!! I really love your selections -- many I'm totally with you on (save for Age of Miracles, which I didn't/don't get the to do over). Ironskin has grown on me more and more as time goes on. I love how you do the categories, too -- so clever!

I don't know if you got a physical copy of The Understory but my blurb is on the back jacket!!! /bragging

Also, 351 books?! BRAVA!

Oh, I thought the world building needed A LOT of work, but her writing was gorgeous!

I am so clever at dodging the rules of Top Ten Tuesday. "Look, I counted to ten. Technically, I did the right thing!"

I didn't! And it's expensive on Amazon. :( I had a NetGalley copy. Honestly, I thought it would suck, because that cover, but it was AMAZING!

I'm really behind, because I, before I started doing TTT in June, didn't keep up with what books were out there, so while everyone else out there has been reading stuff as a new release and moving on, I still have a backlog of stuff I want to read, too. Mostly I'd just see what my librarian friends were reading and recommending on their facebook pages (librarians love John Green, I've found). SO MANY AWESOME BOOKS I'VE BEEN MISSING OUT ON!!!

December 18, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Backlogs happen either way, but they do get worse with blogging and wonderful memes like TTT. My to-read list is 4000 books long or so on GR, and I add new books every day. Plus, I only put one series book on at a time, so...yikes.

Blogger Audra said...

I agree re: the cover -- it was a hot mess -- but the story inside was marvelous. So sweet and touching and weird and sad...!

Very much so. Also hilarious! I've been trying to recommend it as much as I can, but it's not the easiest book to procure, what with the hardcover costing a whopping $18.36. That's why I don't have a copy myself.

I'm really strict with my Goodreads--there isn't much on there that I haven't read or own (I added a couple just to remind me that yes, I do want to read this book, don't forget about it), but that's only about 3-5 books. My TBR on Goodreads is just under 150, and it seems like any time I remove a book from that list, 10 more replace it!

December 18, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Ha, I use GR to not forget about any books that catch my interest. I've tried keeping that list other places, but GR works best for me.

December 18, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think I'd look at my GR TBR and say "I want to read THIS book!" and go to find it only to realize that, wait...I don't own that book. Oops! :D
I use it mostly to keep track of what i've read and what I own. I keep my want to gets in my head...which isn't a great idea, since generally I forget what's up there....lol.

December 18, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Oh, I have a spreadsheet for the books I own. Especially since GR doesn't have a great system for dealing with collections or if you've read multiple additions and so forth. I can't make them match up all that well.

I tried something similar to that once--it was a program I downloaded or something where you could make "index cards" of the books you own. It just...took too long, honestly, and I gave up after a few dozen books.

Oh, I just have an excel spreadsheet with the basic info: Title, author, whether I've read it.

What a great list! I like the dividing it up by genre thing. I think I'm going to have to pick my top 20 books of 2012. And I have read like a fraction of the amount of books you have. It's been an amazing book year!

I loved so many of these books, Christina! A few of them made my list, but I liked them all a lot even if they didn't. The ones I haven't read are ones I definitely want to. I think this is the best list I have seen yet today. Especially since Shadows on the Moon is on it! YAY!

December 19, 2012 at 8:38 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Ha, or it's the best list because I put the most books on it!

I almost forgot Shadows on the Moon. I was looking for a 2012 fairy tale book and couldn't find one and then I was like DUH!

ha! I think how you "cheated" on this one. First of all, congrats on reading all of your books! That is so so commendable! I'm impressed.

I really like the idea behind Theories of Love. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I've been dying to read Wonder and I did like This is Not a Test -- a lot!

Great list!

I see that Jenni saw a review saying that Lex is a twit!?!?! She's freaking awesome and badass, haha. Croak was one of my favourite reads of the year as well, I though it was absolutely amazing!

Same thing for The Fault in Our Stars, John Green is my favourite author and I loved this book!

I've been meaning to read Wonder for a while, but it wasn't a priority.
