Top Ten Bookish Goals for 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
During my recap posts, I've already shared a couple of goals, but I guess I can scrounge up a few more and repeat those. Here goes.

1. Develop a manageable system for finding time to go visit blogs. I spend so much time reading that it's difficult to get around to too many other blogs, but I enjoy that, so I need to make time for it.

2. Write more opinion posts. I only started doing these recently, and I've noticed how popular they are, and they can be seriously cathartic to compose, so win all around!

3. Try to stress less about blogging. I really would love to post a new review everyday, but, sometimes, that's just not possible. For example, I don't think I'll have one ready for tomorrow, and I need to tell myself that there is nothing wrong with that and you won't all hate me.

4. Learn the art of the DNF. I rarely DNF, because I feel obligated to finish something once I start, or because I know I'll just end up trying to read it again later so I might as well buck up and finish now. Still, why put myself through a book I know I'm going to hate on page one? Do the mature thing, self, and walk away.

5. Read more books that weren't published in the current year. Basically, fit in more books that aren't FOR REVIEW, though I'll still review them obvs. Probably this means I'll just need to do more reading, because I'll still be accepting review books. :-p

6. Watch more television. Okay, okay, that's not really a bookish goal on the surface, BUT it's more like make time for other things that I like to do. Last year, I basically did nothing in my free time but read, and that was awesome and all, but I need a break, you know?

7. Read more manga. I love manga, but I only read a couple last year, so I'm going to need to get back into that again. I miss my shoujo, okay!

8. Be more careful with author interactions. Y'all, I don't want to deal with any anger that could be easily avoided, so I'm going to be very careful befriending authors whose books I haven't read unless it's proven they're chill about negative reviews. Also, I think I might not accept review requests from authors, because having to email them about how much you didn't like their book is AWFUL.

9. Start a series, finish a series. I have this bad tendency to read one or two books in a series and then get sidetracked, even if the series is all finished and ready for consumption. This sucks because, when I want to finish it someday, I no longer remember the books I've already read and I have to start from scratch. If possible, I want to finish what I've started!

10. Spread tasks out to make them easier. Cover Snark takes hours, but it wouldn't be so bad if I worked on it a little every day. Responding to comments, too. Just respond when they come in, and it won't be a big deal.

I definitely need to work on commenting on other blogs. I try, but I'm not the best at it.

Having posts scheduled about three weeks ahead of time gives me a lot of time to figure out ways to fill in the empty spaces. So I'm happy to report that I have a post per day all the way through January.

I think it all comes down to time management.

Me either. I'm good about getting to my list of favorites, but exploring beyond that, not so much.

Oh, I should still have a post every day, but it might not be a book review. Of course, I could probably read a short manga tonight and review that. I'll have a review ready, but it's for Sunday. Oh well.

True, but getting ahead is really difficult when you don't take a break. AHEM. I mean to get ahead, I would need to not post now. There's just not really a way for me to build up weeks of content.

Learn the art of DNF: you should! I used to read everything once I started, but now.. I just don't want to force myself reading a book I don't like, while there are so many other amazing books :D Great goals, I hope you can achieve them!

Bahaha, I read that in a Yoda voice, just fyi. So true. It's just hard for me, and if I read more than like 50 pages, I'm finishing no matter what.

I need to balance my time visitting other blogs better as well. I always do it in the morning before I ship my daughter off to school so that when I get home I can focus on other things and it just isn't really the best time.

I totally agree about opinion posts! I love the conversations that they start and how that conversation usually carries over to twitter. For me, my discussion posts are the Monday Book Buzzers videos, they're so much fun!

YES! Nothing wrong with not posting a review a day! Tomorrow is WoW anyway!

I have realized that life is way too short to NOT DNF. There are so many good books out there and there is nothing worse than reading a book you don't like.

Great post chickie!

I tend to get sidetracked and leave series unfinished as well. I was actually thinking I should make that one of my bookish goals... I'd probably have to set a goal like read at least 1 continuing series book for every 5 new series/standalone reads to be sure I accomplish this.

All good goals! Good Luck!

I DNFed a few books last year. More than I've ever done in the past. It used to bother me but I've mostly gotten over that cause why waste time on a book that I'm not enjoying? There were still some books that I should have DNFed and didn't so it's still a work in progress.

I promise that no one will hate you for not posting a review tomorrow (or any other day) or if you don't post at all. :)

Oh yeah, that break really did help in getting ahead. I've managed it before without a break, but I was only ahead by about a week.

I try to do my commenting in the morning too, but there's only so much time, and it only lets me get through my regulars.

I love watching your Book Buzzers posts! Maybe if I planned discussion posts more in advance I could do a video too, but I'm not sure how many people would want to watch.

Truth. I haven't done a WoW for a couple weeks, because of the holidays.

I know! I'm going to try to DNF, I swear!

Oh wow, you're as regimented about your reading as I am. I have so many little rules for myself. It's just ridiculous!

True. I usually stick around because I think it will get better or it was for review or I've already read so much that I might as well finish.

Ha, but, but.....!

Oh man! We so need to do that, especially since I finally slayed my challenge! Let me know when is good for you!

Your goals are great! I think that it's really smart to spread things that take a long time out over a few hours -- I really need to do that with book haul-esque posts.

I feel you on DNFing, I hardly ever DNF and I need to get better at it.

January 8, 2013 at 12:17 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Yeah, I managed to get ahead about a week with reviews, but then you read a couple long books and BAM you're back where you were.

January 8, 2013 at 12:19 PM
Blogger Christina said...

For real. Your book haul posts are epic, both because you get so much and you write out comments for each. Mine are so much easier!

Yes to everything you said! I stopped accepting requests from authors for review (with a very FEW exceptions) a while back because I felt like they never turned out well. I don't even really request ARCs anymore unless they're from Harper Collins or are digital. (Trying to streamline my blogging insanity.)

I also had to learn the art of DNF. Last year was the first time I felt okay doing that. But honestly, I did that quite a bit in 2012 - I'm still not great about knowing what books I'll love before I read them, so I can pick up terrible books sometimes. I noticed my book ratings went up this year because all the ones I would have rated 1 star previously just got put on the did-not-finish shelf, and I don't rate those. So I guess I've added some positivity to the Goodreads world ;)

I rarely DNF either because I feel guilty not giving a book a chance but I gave up twice last year and felt nothing so I'll be doing it more if the book truly sucks. Time is precious!

True. I should probably search books out less. They're just so pretty and tempting, but you're very wise. I wish Harper books worked for me most of the time, like they do for you. It's like they publish books for YOU.

Ha, true. Usually I'm hoping the book will turn around or something, but, yeah. I don't rate DNFs either. In theory, I will be doing the same thing you do now!

Truth! I did DNF Fifty Shades last year, so I know I CAN do it.

I'm seeing a lot of these posts go up and I'm seeing a lot of things that I'd like to work on myself over the course of this year. Good luck on your goals!

There's not a ton of variety in the lists, it's true, but it's wonderful for solidarity and not feeling alone! We all want to read more books, read better books, and comment more. :-p

I need to read more manga too! I only read manga most of the time in high school. Now, I only read novels and no mangas at all. It's time to change that this year! :D
Thanks for stopping by my TTT! (:

They're so much fun, and make a nice change from the usual! Even if the plot is similar, the reading itself is a whole different sensation.

Starting opinion posts sounds like a super fun idea! I might try some out this year! And finishing series is a huge problem with me too. Hopefully I can finish some of those up! Good luck on all of your goals :)

Wow, I can't even imagine reviewing a book a day. I just can't read that fast! So yes, give yourself a break and don't accept any guilt. Great list, Christina!

Yup. From here on out, I'm going to try to dive through all the books available in a series, unless I'm sending it to the graveyard!

Ha, it was insane. I know some people read more, but I don't know how, unless they can speed read or have an inheritance and never have to work.

ALL THESE GOALS, except maybe manga, 'cause I honestly am not sure I would like it. ALSO WE COULD NEVER HATE YOU. No review is completely fine! :) ALSO ALSO yay for more television! Because your TVD tweets are great to read :P.

Blogger Christina said...

Ha, yay for shared goals. I can understand people not loving manga, but oh how I do.

There won't be a review tomorrow. Or there might be but then not on Thursday. One of those things.

Argh those frigging DNF's - I'm terrible at DNFing, and then I get all grumpy and don't want to read anything, but I keep on doing it! It's not like we'll run out of books just because we don't finish one.....

Series - I totally feel ya....Dear Authors - Stop with the series, just write longer stand-alones if you have a lot to say! Love, Us.

Great list lady!

January 9, 2013 at 1:07 PM
Blogger Christina said...

True!

I'm with you on the longer standalones. Or, at least, make them omnibus length, rather than 25 200 page novels, you know?

1. Totally agree. I've email subscribed to my favorites and I respond to the posts I want via email.

2. I would LOVE to write opinion posts. Unfortunately I never have any good ideas! I wish you luck.

3. Of course we won't hate you! I am working on this too though. It's hard.

4. I DNF a lot of books. It's awesome! I wish you luck with this. I try to finish all of my tour and review books, and sometimes it is just not possible. If you are hating something, it's okay to put it down. I wish I had done that with An Uncommon Education.

5. Yes, me too! Working on this one this year. I want to get a library card too!

6. I totally do this. I can't right now because I am in the middle of a huge editing season, but when I'm not busy with that, it's Warcraft all the way, baby! LOL.

7. SKIP.

8. I know why you have this one, and it's sad that you had to say this, but I agree. I am very careful these days with the authors I befriend. Unless it's for work, I usually stick with the book blogger crew.

9. I need to start doing this more. Because I forget details when I go away for a long time.

10. I wish I could do this. But my brain will not let me start something and not finish it. I wish you luck with this!

January 9, 2013 at 2:37 PM
Blogger Christina said...

1. Huh. I actually would hate email subscriptions, but if that works for you then awesome!

2. Yeah, I'm trying to jot them down as I think of them. I had one earlier today that flitted out of my head. D'oh!

3. You have Lyn now, which should help!

4. You can be my idol. Well, you were on the tour. Hard to back out of those.

5. I should really focus on the ones I own, but the library is tempting too!

6. Doing nothing but reading makes it too much like work, which is a sad, sad thing.

7. Y U NO LOVE MANGA?

8. True. I wish I hadn't needed to, but I think it's best.

9. My problem as well. It's the worst with mediocre series I want to finish because I have to reread something I didn't love the first time.

10. I'm not good at it either. Thus why Cover Snark will be done tonight and tomorrow morning. DAMN.

My resolution is to read actually less books but better quality books. I'm not saying they all need to be high brow books but I do want to take the time to find books I know I'll love instead of just reading anything that comes my way!

That's a good resolution, too!
