Top Ten Bookish Memories

This week I'm trying out a new thing: doing a vlog for TTT. It's kind of long because relating memories with detail takes time. If you watch, you're a doll. Also, please ignore my poofy hair. It's the worst. For those who don't want to or can't watch, I'm putting a brief list below.

1. Winning Book Cart Drill Team at ALA 2010
2. Attending the Audie Awards
3. Getting a hug from Neil Gaiman
4. Finishing my book-a-day book challenge
5. Hanging out with Lenore Appelhans in Asheville
6. Eating brunch with E.C. Myers
7. Receiving my first physical review copy from a publisher
8. Seeing people talk about Cover Snark (who I totally didn't know knew I existed)
9. Teaching my parents to love YA fiction
10. Discussing books with pretty much anyone and everyone

What are some of your top moments? Tell me in the comments or link me up!

Thanks for sharing. :)

Neil Gaiman hug !!! >:O I've never met a single author (that I know of) so they are still magical beings in my mind. :D

Annd, I'm not sure why the auto-caption thing automatically turned on around 2:54. "I've always had the employer's money if you read 365 bucks a year." Wut.

Also Book Cart Drill team sounds AWESOME! haha. And I love that you got your parents into YA. I love converting people!

Now you are making me want to go back to making vlogs for TTT! Good choice for this one because memories are fun to share!

It's so weird how everyone asks me how he smelled. I didn't sniff him. Sorry everyone for this failure on my part.

Thanks. This is not me at my cutest. I'm way too lazy to straighten my hair very often, because it takes freaking hours. I don't know how you do it.

It was SO awesome! We also got to meet Willems and Scieszka!

You should do it! All of them don't lend themselves to it, but this one really did. :)

Great list & I liked how you made it into a vlog. I've never heard about this Book Cart Drill Team thing but it sounds fun and interesting! That's awesome that you've gotten your parents into YA books. Spreading the love :)

Awesome list! I haven't got much bookish moments.. maybe winning a signed book here and there and also getting our first physical arc! However this month is going to be a busy month of book signing events and such and I am sure I will have more bookish memories!

I sat through your entire video. Give me a cookie.
it's also because I'm currently trying to avoid doing homework at all costs.

Props for your book cart drill team. Seriously, I didn't even know people did that. It's so delightfully nerdy. I approve.

And yay for converting parents! My parents practically only read in Chinese. *sigh* And my dad is just a grouchy old man who is convinced anything geared towards young people must be shallow and not worth reading. hmph. The last book he read was about prostate health.

Avoiding homework is a primary directive of college.

It's the best. We had SO much fun.

Ew. Prostate health.

"Avoiding homework is a primary directive of college."
So is commenting on blogs while in class I assume. *wink wink*

You have to give props to my father for having the guts to borrow that book from the library though. If I had to borrow such a book I would have to lie and say it's for a friend or something. "Wha? Prostate health? I dooonnnn't know how that got in the pile!...but what the heck? give it to me anyway."

February 6, 2013 at 1:43 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Well, I didn't do that, but only because we didn't have laptops in class and I didn't have internet on my phone (still don't).

To be fair, it would be a bit more odd for you to check out a book on prostate health than for your father to do so. We have self check out in our library system. I'm a big fan. Otherwise, I'd be like "yes, I'm an adult. Now give me my shoujo manga and YA novels without judgment, please."

My laptop is heavy (5 lbs) and everyday I consider not bringing it...but that means I can't check on twitter/email/blogs/watch youtube videos in between classes...and that's just too big of a sacrifice. Oh, and last minute essay typing! I am a professional procrastinator.

"We have self check out in our library system."
O_O THAT'S SO SOPHISTICATED. I WANT!
When I was a kid, I checked out a book on hacking. And said it was for my sister so the librarians wouldn't think I'm a criminal. I was just curious! And the book didn't teach me how to hack. pooey.

Speaking of checking out manga, I checked out so many 18+ manga with the mature rating on the back as a kid--but I guess librarians don't care.

I would totally take my laptop under those circumstances. You need to be entertained, and, if your school is like mine, it's a good semester if two of your classes actually hold your interest.

It's great, because, unless it won't scan, there is no need for anyone to judge what you read.

Bahahaha, little Lilian was a burgeoning crook.

Really? I don't think our library has any of those. Too bad.

Well, today we watched a video of pacific islanders catching sharks, and that was entertaining. (we are required to take Hawaiian Studies, which encompasses other island cultures as well) These people are seriously badass, they paddle out on a TINY canoe, and catch sharks by slipping a NOOSE on the shark and then beating it with a bat...or spearing them by throwing spears. O_O I didn't even think that was possible.

Don't worry, I had a conscience. Despite my criminal pursuits, I still wanted to hunt down pedophiles.
I think I wanted to hack Neopets. I was obsessed with that game/website.

Your library doesn't have Paradise Kiss..or any manga with sex scenes?

February 6, 2013 at 2:56 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Thanks for explaining because I was very curious about what class would do that. I don't think I'd want to go beat a shark with a bat. I mean, it's better than nothing, but...yikes. Also, what if you just make it mad and chompy? I like my limbs where they are.

Bahahaha, oh yeah, you did. A regular computer-hacking Chris Hansen. OH MAN, I was too. That takes me back. My poor ponies must have died of starvation years ago. Poor ponies.

There are manga with sex scenes, but they don't collect most of the super racy ones. Probably for the best, since some little assholes rip out all of the kissing scenes anyway.

I read a scanlation of Paradise Kiss though and it was awesome.

First off, I love your hair.

I watched the book cart drill team vid and I totally saw which one you were. :)

I still can't believe you read 367 books last year. I don't know how you did it but I want to be able to read as fast as you. I wish I could!

I don't remember the first physical review copy I got. But I think it is awesome that you do. It means you are an awesome person! :D

I wish I could get my parents to read YA!

It's good that someone does.

The hair makes me very easily recognizable.

I don't know. I was on track for this year too, until I went to so many bookish events I didn't get any actual books read. Oops!

Actually, I totally looked back in my email, because I remembered who the first publicist to contact me was. X_X

I still cannot believe you read 367 books *bows down in awe*. AND you hugged Neil Gaiman.

Cover snark is fantastic - YAY for Thursdays. Which is tomorrow, huzzah!

Woo! Go me. I am the best. Clearly Neil Gaiman sensed that. Or he's just really nice.

This is the time of week where I hate Cover Snark, because I actually have to do it.

"what if you just make it mad and chompy?"
My thoughts exactly. But the guys of that island still go out on their TINY canoes half naked for shark catching. They get excited over sharks. One guy in the documentary was saying how happy he was that he was able to attract four sharks near his canoe. Until they attacked his canoe causing it to break apart...BUT he was able to fix it with WIRE (I would love to know how.) While he was talking about it I was trying to catch a glimpse of his hands in the interview just to make sure he didn't get his arms bitten off or something.

I am sure hacking skills would come in handy for Chris Hansen in tracking down those pedophiles. You know, aside from giving me unlimited neopoints.
Ah, my obsessive Neopets phase. I had a blue unicorn. It was cute.
I actually went back to it two years ago, got obsessed all over again. >__< Don't judge me!

I think Paradise Kiss was my first exposure to a sex scene in manga. I was like 9 or something. Goodbye, innocence.

What? That sounds like some crazy reality tv show staged drama. He FIXED HIS SHARK-EATEN CANOE WITH WIRE? Why did he even have wire? How was the damage fixable with wire? WHAT?

But we know which of those is more important.

I won't, because I kind of want to go see if it's still there right now, but I know that would lead to bad things, so I won't. I'll just go play some Bejeweled.

Whatever. Not like you probably hadn't seen them in movies or something before then.

OMG - if I did a top ten, hanging out with you would be on it too - SO FUN!!!!!

I DON'T KNOW. HE DIDN'T SAY. At first I thought it might've been a mistranslation in subtitles (since he was talking in another language) but I clearly heard "wire" in his sentence...If I read it in a book, I would probably criticize it for being completely unbelievable.
I mean, if it was even something like DUCT TAPE I would have an easier time believing it. But then again, before today I didn't even know you could catch sharks with a noose made up of ROPE and a bat. But he did it. Twice.

I know you want to...*nudge nudge*

I don't even remember when I found out about sex. Surely wasn't sex ed in 4th grade... we had to get our parents to sign the form permitting us to take sex ed. And if you parents didn't sign, you were sent in another room. I didn't want to be separated from my friends and be the only one not taking sex ed (just in case my parents were more conservative than I imagined,) I lied to my mom and told her it was just some health form she had to sign.
To this day, I don't think she knew (because her English is not that great and she signs pretty much anything I ask her to--damn, I sound like an awful daughter.)

February 7, 2013 at 1:32 AM
Blogger Christina said...

He should have said, because omg that doesn't sound like a thing. I mean, a shark damaging a boat would seem to involve a hole and you can't fix holes with wire. Duct tape WOULD be more believable, though tape doesn't tend to like water, but at least it covers things!

*resists* *twitches*

I don't remember precisely either. I just remember that at some point in elementary school, everyone would giggle anytime the gym teacher said "balls," which was a lot because it's gym. We had sex ed in 6th grade. You guys must be early bloomers in Hawaii.

Awwww, yay!

From what I heard the shark broke the front AND the back of the canoe. I imagine the shark kept ramming the canoe until it the canoe broke? No idea....or something. He didn't say it was a hole, but it definitely sounded much, much worse than just a hole either. But he fixed it up enough to sail back home with wire. Either this guy is super resourceful with wire or he's a magician. I like to imagine he rode the shark home. Like a boss.

Ah, kids. I remember my peers making a big deal out of looking up the word "sex" in the dictionary. So nerdy. But then again, saying "stupid" and "shut up!" was already considered swearing.
Okay, ow that I think about it more carefully, I think it was fifth grade and not 4th grade.

February 7, 2013 at 8:53 PM
Blogger Christina said...

What? NO. I call shenanigans. You cannot fix a damaged boat with wire. He DID ride the shark home. He just doesn't want people to know about his powers.

Bahaha, I remember my mom being scandalized that we all said sucks in elementary school.
