The One That's ALL About Me

This past week on their Book Girls Don't Cry...They Vent feature, Jenni of Alluring Reads, Amy of Book Loving Mom, and Giselle of Xpresso Reads did posts of random facts about themselves. Even though most of the facts weren't bookish, I actually loved getting to know each of them a little bit better, and I wanted to do the same thing. I asked on Twitter and on my Blogoversary post if anyone had any questions, so now you can get off the tenterhooks you've been waiting on and find out the answers!

Christina of Oh, Chrys asked:

WHAT IS YOUR HAIR SECRET?
If I have a hair secret, it's probably that I don't do much of anything with it, largely because I don't have any idea how. I'm not even good at a basic braid, so my options are limited. Most days, all I do is wash it, brush it out, shake it, and then let it air dry. Ta da! Nice hair, if it's not too humid and my hair is in the mood. Bonus Fact 1: When I was in high school I hated my hair and straightened it a lot, but I'm much too lazy to bother now. Bonus Fact 2: My hair is as long now than it's ever been.

Jenni of Alluring Reads asked:

What are you afraid of?
Fear #1: Bugs of almost any sort. Cockroaches and bees are the worst, but most of them freak me out. Bonus fact: if I see a bee in my general vicinity, I will run away, no matter the circumstance.

Fear #2: Horror movies. Seriously, they TERRIFY me. I can read horror novels no problem, but even the cheesiest or least action-filled horror movie leaves me a quivering mass.

Fear #3: Climbing ladders. This is a weird one. I suspect I died falling off a ladder in a previous life...or maybe I was pushed. I generally can't get more than one step up one before I start shaking so badly I have to get off. Yet I have no problem climbing on top of a wobbly chair to reach high things. Logical, this fear is not. Bonus fact: The only ladder I've ever climbed to the top was in my college's theater, because you could get to the clock tower and have a nice view of the quad and the Ohio River. There was much shaking and panicked mumbling involved.

Fear #4: Things around my neck. Again, I'm pretty sure a previous life was ended by strangling. I can't stand to have anything around my neck. I have to wear necklaces with really long chains, and prefer to wear lower-necked shirts, because t-shirts can even bother me.

ExperimentBL626 of Tolerably Smart asked:

How did you get into book blogging?
I got into book blogging mostly through my terrible memory. It's something I'd been wanting to do since junior year of college, mostly for my own use, since I often can't remember what I've read or how I felt about it precisely. During the period of unemployment post-grad school, I finally decided to go ahead and start the blog and review the ARCs I'd gotten at ALA 2010. At that point, I pretty much knew nothing about the community, and my reviews were short and sort of awful. Feel free not to read them. One of my inspirations was definitely Presenting Lenore, which is pretty much the only book blog I read at the time, though I was quite active on Shelfari.

When did you become a Reader?
That's covered in my chat with Kara, so I'll direct you to that post.

Rachel of Rachel Reads asked:

What are your hobbies outside reading?
Hobbies. Outside reading. Right. Well, there's my programs. And ummm hanging out with my friends. Yeah, I'm not really a hobby person, actually. I do go through phases where I get sort of obsessed with something, like crosswords or whatever, but mostly I just read and watch tv and am awesome with my friends. For fun, I keep the YABC catalog clean, but that's not really outside reading and is really weird, but, whatever, it calms me.

Christina of Christina Reads YA asked:

Which time period you'd like to live in? When?
Well, part of me really wants to live all up in the Regency, because my curly hair would make me a classy dame, and because partying with JA would be awesome, but then there's the whole cleanliness thing. Also the being married off to be some dude's property thing. So. If I were going to time travel to another time period, the 60s or so are about as far back as I can go and still have most of the modern conveniences, I think. For permanent living, where I am now isn't too bad, really.

Where in the world you'd live if given the chance to live elsewhere?
Either Germany or Ireland or England. I can speak German passably, and I'm sure I'd get it back/pick up more pretty quickly if I lived there. Obviously, Ireland and England speak English already, which is winning. The two I've seen (Germany and Ireland) are gorgeous countries, and the men are so hot and accented. *sighs* However, I am not brave enough to move abroad without a job and stuff, so that probably won't happen. SAD DAY.

What house are you in HP?
Ravenclaw for SURE. After that, I'm either a Slytherin or a Gryffindor, but probably Slytherin, since I'd be too lazy for all that bravery. What I am NOT is a Hufflepuff.

To quote the book you hate, what would your fear landscape look like?
It would be very busy. I listed some up above!

Kimberly of On the Wings of Books asked:

You read Ready Player One, right? What movie do you know so well you could recite all the lines for it in real time?
With my memory, I can't actually do that for anything without the movie play. If the movies playing, then Blazing Saddles, The Producers, The Princess Bride, and probably The Lion King.

Tammy asked:

Marry, shag, kill Harry Potter edition, who would you?
Oooh, no constrictions. Alright! I will marry Fred Weasley (shush book 7), shag Draco Malfoy, and kill Cho Chang.

And is there any author that makes you totally nervous to meet in person?
Hmmm, I'm pretty nervous to meet all of them actually. I just don't know what to say that isn't either totally boring or really fangirly. Maybe Karsten Knight? He's really hot, and I would hate to drool on him. :p (Let the record reflect that I have no history of such behavior.) But, in all seriousness, I've already met Kristin Cashore, John Green, and Neil Gaiman, so...

AD Starrling asked:

Where do you want to be in another 3 years, re: this blog?
O_O I have no clue. Maybe still doing this. *shrugs* I'm a planner, but only in the short term really. Thinking of the future makes me feel like I'm coming down with the vapors. *clutches vial of smelling salts*

Gillian of Writer of Wrongs asked:

If you could only watch ONE Disney movie, say, while visiting someone who owns all the Disney movies, which would it be?
DUDE, HOW COULD YOU? I'm assuming we're talking classic animated. In that case, Beauty and the Beast. If DCOM, then either Smart House or Model Behavior.

Also, if you could only pick three book boyfriends to have in your real life boyfriend harem, which would they be?
Elend from Mistborn, Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey, and Tom Imura from Rot & Ruin. The first two are cute and wealthy and will discuss books with me at length. The latter will defend me from zombies and look damn hot doing it.

What food are you craving RIGHT THIS INSTANT?
Chick-fil-A waffle fries dipped in mayonnaise!

Lynn K. asked:

What do you think of a series with human eating titans (giants) and the humans who use Spiderman-like maneuver technology to defeat them?
*scratches head* I'm not sure if this is a thing that exists or a writing idea. I'm not opposed. All depends on the characterization!

Heather of Coffee-Stained Pages asked:

If you were a donut, what kind of donut would you be?
Boston Creme, because I'm crispy outside with a gooey center. Or something. Also, I'm super extra fattening and perhaps bad for your self-esteem. Mostly, I don't think I'm a donut, because I am not that level of appealing, but there's also no way I'm some sort of healthy donut.

Alexia Boesen of Adventures in Reading asked:

Okay so what is your favorite movie?
A Room with a View, the one from 1987, not the BBC one from a couple of years ago which can go die in a hole.

Best kiss ever. For most hilarious gif from this movie ever, but with male nudity, go here.

Ellis asked:

Do you play or have you ever played any musical instruments?
Yes, I played the euphonium in concert band and the marching baritone in marching band for five and two years respectively.

If you had a favorite author who originally wrote their works in a foreign language that you don't know (well), would you be willing to learn that language simply to adore the genius in its original format? I imagine it might be difficult with Solzhenitsyn, for instance, because Russian is another alphabet entirely, but maybe you have a hidden talent for it ^_^
Girl, I would LOVE to learn ALL the languages and read everything in its original format. First up would be Russian and Japanese. I think I COULD do it, but I don't have the time. :(

Hannah of Irish Banana asked:

Boxers or briefs?
Well, I do not personally wear either, but I'm a fan of boxers all the way. Boxer briefs are acceptable. Dudes in briefs = hahaha no.

Jen of Jenuine Cupcakes asked:

Edward or Jacob?
Though I don't care much anymore, I was a Jacob fan back in the day, minus the part where he gets a bit creepy. But, seriously, mopey dude or hot, super tall native boy?

Steena asked:

Sum yourself up in a GIF. Just one!
Only one? GAH. You know what? I'm cheating, because that is a fact about me. So there.

On bad days.

On good days.

So there you have it. Me, in a very weird nutshell. What have we learned?

I'm totally scared of climbing ladders, too. Mostly because I'm afraid of heights. Even if it's just two metres or less. Once I had to take a book from the university library and there was this tall, shaky ladder. I was, I'm not climbing that ever. But in the end I did and I survived to tell the tale.

Also, team Jacob all the way (before the Renesme imprinting). But shagging Draco Malfoy? Yuck.

We learned that you are awesome.

And yes team Jacob all the way before the weird/creepy Renesmee crap. Also my mom actually went to drama camp with Molly Ringwald. Your GIF just reminded me.I could watch The Lion King over and over. So I need to see the non BBC Room With a View I guess. I HATED the BBC one.

I am not alone! It's not so much heights that get me as heights I feel like I could fall from. Put me in a tall building and I'm cool. Glass elevator, great! Cliff with nothing keeping me on and I am VERY CAUTIOUS. Ladder = hell no, I'll die.

Hey now, the actor is hot. When he's not making the sneering face, okay.

Ha, thanks.

The BBC one is non-canon. Those changes were NOT COOL. The first one is perfection.

Marry, shag, kill Harry Potter edition, who would you? -- best question asked, hands down. Me, I marry Neville Longbottom (have you see the actor lately? hot!), shag Harry Potter, kill Ron Weasley.

Did you pick "Beauty and the Beast" for the library?

If you were active on Shelfari, how did you get into Goodreads?

August 13, 2013 at 3:36 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Yes, I have seen the actor lately, but he's not really my type, tbh. Harry seems like he would be a boring shag. Awwww, poor Ron!

MAYBE I DID.

Mostly because I got friendly with the community which lives here. Shelfari was terrible for actually interacting with people, since it never told you if anyone commented or liked your review.

Me too about straightening my hair. Can't brush unless wet either, though I do make frequent use of Biosilk and braids. You're lucky that you can just leave it and it'll be okay.

UHMGKFJKA COCKROACHES. You are lucky, my friend. Over the course of being a neuroscience major, I had dissect five of those little buggers. One of our tasks before dissection was to have three different species in a bowl and tap them where this little sensory thing was and see whether they exhibited "escape behavior." I lived in constant fear that one of them would escape, jump on me, or crawl up my leg when on the floor. That, and with a perpetual desire to throw-up during that lab.

YES.YES.YES. to what you said about horror movies but not being afraid of the books. I had nightmares as a kid after watching frakking Jurassic Park, and that's not even a horror movie!!!

Here's my next question. Are you my fear twin? Because I too am afraid of climbing ladders and have no problem with chairs. I don't know. I just don't trust myself on a ladder? *shudders*

I promise not to read your early reviews if you promise not to read mine.

I am also not much of a hobby person. I used to be, but as time dwindles, it seems too hard to squeeze a bunch of extra things in.

Me too on the Regency period. That is probably the only reason I read the cheap historical romance novels from then. I meant to add in a part about not suffering from sexism in the ideal time-traveling part, but alas I failed on that end.

Ireland is so pretty! I'm with you. I'd love to go, but without a job... I applied to study abroad there and would have gone if not for the interference of my parents.

I actually suspect that I'd be a Hufflepuff. I haven't done much in Pottermore though so who knows? At least we'd have the chance of being inter-House friends :P vs. dem Slytherins.

Why Fred over George?

You met Kristin Cashore? (!!!!)
But also, I live in fear of author signings. I too feel like I can't say anything I really want to when I'm there and most of the times end up saying nothing unless prompted.

Lol the donut question. That succeeded in making me want a Boston creme. It was the last one I had ordered from Donut Man, which has the best donuts ever.

Dude. I cannot braid my hair AT ALL. I get overwhelmed by holding three sections of hair at once. Bah. And I am totally with you on wearing lower-cut shirts. Not because I'm scared of being choked, but just because it's so damn uncomfortable to have a tight collar around the neck, you know? Also, Ireland. Move to Ireland. Such a pretty country. And lots of beer. Dying at the donut question and oh my god yes, to A Room with a View.

Love this post, Christina!

OH my gosh. Karsten Knight. Yup, he would be getting drooled on for sure. Sorry, Karsten. But...remember that talk we had about hot authors a while back? WELL...I have one for you that will make you fall over. Check out the author of Red Rising, Pierce Brown. And then watch the video of him talking at Comic Con. GOOD LORD. http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6474348.Pierce_Brown

You played the baritone in marching band? GOOD LORD, girl! You must have had some serious arm strength!

Nice GIF choices! :D

Oh man, I still have nightmares about dinosaurs. I love that movie a lot, but, yeah, I was not ready for it at 6.

MAYBE WE ARE FEAR TWINS. I am sorry the world also scares you.

*shakes on it*

I've never been a hobby person. My obsessions come and go, mostly.

Well, the biggest issue for me is the smells and stuff. Like, I cannot imagine having my period in the regency era. Bleh.

Sucks that your parents wouldn't let you go, though it may have been too expensive.

I didn't do Pottermore either, but I know this.

Not sure, just always preferred Fred.

Only briefly at BEA last year. She signed Bitterblue!

We do not have Donut Man.

When I was younger I could braid, but I lost that muscle memory and it's not almost impossible for me to do. SIGH.

Well, I do know, but it's even more uncomfortable for me than for normal people.

Get me a job? And you a job? We can go live in Ireland and I can find a hot Irish boyfriend. Good plan?

YAY. Anyone who loves A Room with a View must be awesome.

Oh man, it was so HEAVY. That was the only time of my life I had any arm muscles at all. Tiny little biceps. Lol.

Blogger Ellis said...

Oh boy, where to even begin... This will be a long-ass comment.

Okay, first off, I agree with Kara. Pierce Browning is very nice to look at. I'm sure you'd rather have him in your harem. Speaking of, are you willing to bring Vin's wrath on you when you steal her man? I think not.

Things around your neck... Does that mean you don't wear scarfs either? Interesting.

You're attracted to the German accent? Girl, you're beyond repair. B t dubs, Belgium has a small corner reserved for German-speaking people, so if you decide to move, we can always take this to an irl battlefield. *straps boots* We can go for fries with mayonnaise afterwards.

This is your fearscape: everything around you consists of Divergent/Insurgent/The Summer Garden pages and in the middle of it all you see a verrry happy Ellis/Elend union. BAM, nightmares and no one to comfort you. I can always lend you my dreamcatcher.

I misread your answer re: blog in 3 years as "maybe still doing things" and snorted at my own terrible reading comprehension.

*explicitly ignores answers to Gillian's questions*

Oooh, my questions! I actually had to google "euphonium", haha. This is scandalous, because I was in an amateur concert band for over six years, but I'm just going to blame my ignorance on the language barrier. Do you still play? I have awesome visions of you in marching band right now. Yesss, I'm glad we're both of the "I wish I could read the original format but life" philosophy. Good for you, being all ambitious and picking two super difficult languages. Ah, well, a girl can dream.

That was it. The naked gif scarred me. Elend says hi, by the way. We're very happy together.

I AM READY.

Vin will just have to deal. I'm not sharing the secret of escaping book pages with her, so I am safe from her wrath. I just need to have you changed into the kind of vampire that cannot cross water and then nothing can part Elend and me.

I wear scarves very rarely, but I drape them loosely or don't loop them around my neck. I am not made for cold climes.

Ooooh, yum! I want this to happen. Why are international flights so expensive? *weeps*

BLEH.NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! HOW DARE YOU.

If I am not still doing things then I am dead.

Lol, I know most people don't know what it was. It's basically a baritone, but with slight structural differences, supposedly to improve sound quality I imagine, thus the pretentious name.

A girl totally can dream. Russian at least looks like language to me. I can't make heads or tails of Japanese characters. But I would if I had enough time I am sure.

What? I can't see your comment past Elend's gorgeousness. BRB, getting some.

I did, which is why we have such a splendid relationship that she lets me "borrow" Elend every once in a while. So ... HIDE YO METALS, GIRL. Ugh, vampires. Really? They are my most hated creatures of the paranormal realm so that would just be extra cruel.

If you're not equipped for cold climes, you really shouldn't come here, however appealing the promises of juicy fries and delicious chocolate sound. I am evil, I know. Sorry, that's the bargain we struck with the weather gods, but I'm totally there with you on the international flights part. They seriously stand in the way of friendly cross-cultural relations.

Sorray, I'm just really good at creating awful prospects. It's one of the more pesky and useless Graces :((

"If I am not still doing things then I am dead." Truer words have never been spoken. Well, unless you count Elend's declaration of undying love for me. You know what I realised? I don't think Vin and Elend even KISSED in the first book. Like, what's even the point then?

What is the point, I ask you.

Based on the name, I thought it was some xylophone/percussion hybrid. It sounded extremely exotic. I agree with your observations re: Russian. I recognise at least half the letters in that alphabet, so that's something ...

How dare you objectify Elend! He's so much more than just a pretty face, which just goes to show which one of us truly appreciates his essence. Wow, that didn't sound dirty at all. Okay, have fun with your fantasies! They serve as quite the entertainment before Elend and I venture (see what I did there?) into an evening of the more, ahem, adult variety.

August 14, 2013 at 2:12 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Yes, but she loves him so much she accepts that I can make him happier. Vin's a smart girl, and not an obsessive stalker. DON'T FUCK WITH ME (OR ELEND) OR YOU WILL BECOME WHAT YOU LOATHE!

But, but...summer! Is it cold in summer?

My grace is sarcasm, which is good for little but pissing people off. Oh well, I'll take it.

THEY TOTES DID NOT. If she liked it, she should have LOCKED THAT DOWN. Which is why I put a ring on it. And we're married. So too bad.

LOL. Nope. It looks like a small tuba and sounds like a trombone. Why do we need another instrument that sounds like a trombone without the slide? NO IDEA.

BAHAHA, essence. Vinture? Are you having a threesome? If that's your thing, then...okay.

Seriously, Christina, how can you be married to someone and not know their last name? YEAH THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT. Lord Elend Venture, ever heard of him? Because seems like you haven't, which isn't necessarily a problem, since that means we're talking about different Elends and YOU CAN HAVE YOURS. I will be the Lady Ellis Venture then.

True, true. Vin is the awesomeness in person. I don't think I could handle a Vinture threesome though. Too many limbs to keep track of.

You know what happens in summer here? IT HAILS. WE HAD HAIL TWO DAYS AGO. AND THAT IS TOTES NORMAL FOR US NORTHERNERS.

Instruments are an odd thing in general. Why do we need four types of violin? Hell if I know. It just looks pretty and as you have proven, there will always be that one person who plays the weird instrument. I played the oboe for ten years, aka the saddest and most depressing instrument of them all. That's just how I roll.

I have loads of other graces, but they will remain a secret. For now.

Don't fool yourself, girl. Vin is totally coming after both of us if she ever finds out. Personally, I'm not going to take that chance, so maybe we should draw up a joint custody arrangement or something. TTFN.

IT WAS A PUN, ELLIS. ELEND WOULD UNDERSTAND. HE LOVES ME FOR MY SENSE OF HUMOR. Vin + Venture = Vinture. You let her out and she's just chilling with you. Way to add a third wheel or menage a trois to your relationship.

WHUT.

We just need the cello. The prettiest sounds come from that instrument. The most hilarious-sounding instrument = the bassoon.

Sigh. I GUESS I could agree to that. I mean, the other boys in my harem need attention too.

August 14, 2013 at 3:05 PM
Blogger Ellis said...

Well, you didn't get my pun either so there. *sticks tongue out* Chillin' with Vin is something I could totally see myself doing. She will make me get into my Mistborn powers and then we'll just fly to the Americas and reclaim our Young Venture.

AS IF I DIDN'T KNOW THAT VINTURE IS JUST VIN AND ELEND SQUISHED TOGETHER. You underestimate my brain powers. Yess, yess, we get hail here a lot. The weather is just completely BONKERS. No one survives but the truly peasantry peeps with ice in their veins, aka my ancestors.

The bassoon is my big brother, instrument-wise. The cello is indeed very pretty. I have a difficult relationship with strings but the cello is Ellis-approved.

See, that's the difference between us. My harem = Elend. That is some DEDICATION, girl. Not really though, Brigan and Day frequent my chambers a lot, too. I think that's my top three: Elend, Brigan, Day. No wait, top four: Elend, Dave the Laugh, Brigan, Day.

Violin and viola do not interest me. Cello is the best though.

Day is like 15. Just saying.

You can go hang out with the Lord Rules and Elend's father. And Shan Elariel. Let's not forget the fiancée "I might me engaged to, but I'm not exactly sure because it's been over a year and we haven't exactly done anything about it." That's right, I can quote Elend right now, because of our extensive pillow talk.

Brigan is like 28 or something and has a daughter. Elend is my age. Day would be 17 by now, which is ALMOST legal and only an age difference of 4 years. Dave the Laugh is totally legal by now. I'm still a young broad, Christina.

You cannot handle my country. We are of a special kind.

I would just be too lazy to survive in Mistorn land. That's a feature of my country you might be able to handle. Mayhaps.
