Cover Snark (16)

Obviously, I'm still trying to decide on a good name for my weekly cover reveal post. Mostly because I keep finding other blogs that do the same sort of thing on the same day. It's not a big deal, but I like having my own name. Anyway, I think this incarnation is a bit clearer about what you can expect from my posts. At first, I did mostly just publish the cover with a quick thumbs up or down. Now, I generally do much more. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, even if you think I'm wrong!

Just Getting Started - Justin Bieber
Thoughts: Ordinarily, I would never include this cover. I mean, for one thing, non-fiction cover. But whatever, it's the Bieb y'all! So here's what happened. Just Bieber tweeted this and then Twitter exploded. For real. Someone retweets it, even now days later, every second or two. I just do not get the crazy. His fans are, perhaps, even scarier than Cassie Clare fans. O_O *steps away from Twitter*

The Unloved - Jennifer Snyder (BlookGirl)
Thoughts: There's something about this cover I find very off-putting. I think ti's the makeup she's wearing maybe. The cover calls to mind Velveteen more than a contemporary, in the mood and the unwashed look of her hair. If this were the cover for a dystopia of some sort, I think I'd be more of a fan.

Cover Battle: Fury's Kiss (Dorina Basarab #3) - Karen Chance

Thoughts: These are REALLY similar. I'm going with the US cover because I like the font treatments better. I do like that the UK cover looks a bit creepier, though. Those pants are really unflattering. They make her butt look really weird. Is that just me? It's not like they're practical, either, so why wear them?

Destiny, Rewritten - Kathryn Fitzmaurice
Thoughts: You know how to make bookish people buy your book? Put books on it. Even better, also put a cat on it. Check and check. Note: this works. I want this book SO HARD right now. Seriously, this cover is utterly charming. Also, this should have bunches of Emily Dickinson references!
Also, I'm not one to complain about what people do on Goodreads, but I do think it's rude someone rated this one star over six months pre-publication WITHOUT ANY EXPLANATION. You can think what you want, but say something. Sigh.

Rump: The True Story of Rumplestiltskin - Liesl Shurtliff
Thoughts: Liesl is a good German name, so I'm expecting this to be really dark. Is this fair? Perhaps not. DON'T CARE. Anyway, this cover's pretty good. It's definitely in the style of the animated movies coming out now. I like the woman in the tower spinning. I would like to know, though, what that boy is pointing at, as he's not really pointing high enough to draw your eye to the tower. May be he's just like, 'Oy, what's with those words floating in the air?'

A Slither of Hope (Angel Sight #2) - Lisa M. Basso
Thoughts: Sorry for the lack of links to Goodreads, but only the first book is on Goodreads so far, so...yeah. Anyway, the covers! Alright, I know these are ridiculous and just distracting me with shinies, but I ... love them. Okay! I admit it. I think they're gorgeous! I am a bit bemused by this title though. A 'Slither' of Hope? Is this an Adam and Eve snake thing? It could be, since this is an angel book. Also, I would like to commend the designers for NOT putting angel wings on the cover. I think this is my favorite of the three, especially because of how sassy this pose is.

A Matter of Time (Angel Sight #3) - Lisa M. Basso
Thoughts: More shinies! This is definitely the worst of the lot. I find the smoke or cloth or whatever at the bottom to be more distracting than in the previous covers, likely because it looks like her body is formless white stuff. MAYBE IT IS. Who knows? Maybe is about being an angel made of mist.

Cover Battle: Royal Street (Sentinels of New Orleans #1) - Suzanne Johnson
Thoughts: What's cool is how different these are while using the same sort of concept. Both have some New Orleans-y backgrouns. I think I might like the font treatment better in the UK version. What made me declare the US cover the winner is that the girl looks like she's in the process of taking you out, while the UK girl looks defensive. I like that the heroine on the US cover is holding a weapon and is making lightning (or something similar looking), whereas on the UK cover the clouds are doing the lightning-ing.

Cover Battle: River Road (Sentinels of New Orleans #1) - Suzanne Johnson
Thoughts: I am seriously loving the discussion between the covers on these. They're so similar in concept but distinct in execution. I definitely think the UK covers do the series thing better. I also really like the shades of green they've used. I'm going for the US cover again, because, as with book one, the heroine looks much more kickass. The girl on the UK cover looks like a cat-burglar, although not a good one, since I imagine there aren't many places to burgle in the swampy-looking forest.

Shift (Firstborn Trilogy #2) - Raine Thomas
Thoughts: *snickers* *snorts* Well, I thought the cover for Defy was hilarious, and this one certainly did not disappoint. Actually, it may even be more hilarious, but jury's still out on that one. The timing was really bad to try to pull off that makeup and have it look cool, since it pales in comparison to this one in the having butterflies on your face contest.

Dead River - Cyn Balog
Thoughts: Haven't these kids seen Cabin in the Woods? What a terrible idea. Anyway, I definitely think the atmosphere of this cover is spot on. However, it looks pretty cheaply done, so much so that rather being creeped out by the hands coming at me out of the nasty river, I am amused. This is probably NOT the intended reaction. Show of hands for who thinks they could have done this better? We're at two with me and the ghost/zombie/lake-monster.

The Light Behind the Window - Lucinda Riley
Thoughts: Pretty! Apparently this one switches between the present and the past, like her previous book which I loved (though some def didn't). I like that the cover seems to capture this a bit. For example, the past is in the old-fashioned costume the model is wearing. However, you can see that the building is greatly aged, so it's like we're looking into the house from the present and seeing the past. Nifty!

Override (Glitch #2) - Heather Anastasiu
Thoughts: So I definitely have seen this cover before. It was on Shelfari a week or two ago. This is so weird, since Shelfari usually lags behind Goodreads on new books. How the heck did it get there? Moving on, I'm really disappointed by this cover, and was hoping the one I saw on Shelfari was false rather than an early leak. Alas. While the concept is similar, I find this one much less appealing. The red and yellow colors are less flattering. Plus, the font treatment has a very different feel to it.

Criminal - Terra Elan McVoy
Thoughts: ANOTHER one that's not on Goodreads yet. What are those slackers doing? Agh! I'm really not sure what's happening in this cover, but I like it, and I'm pretty sure I'll add this to my tbr list based on the cover alone. Seriously, what is that thing cutting through the title. I feel like I should be able to tell and I can't and it's frustrating!

Days of Blood and Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone #2) - Laini Taylor
Thoughts: While I don't dislike the UK cover, I do think it's somewhat boring. It just doesn't grab my eye like the US cover does. Also, I'm marking it down for not matching it's companion as well. If you haven't seen the UK cover for Daughter of Smoke and Bone, click here.

True (Elixir #3) - Hilary Duff
Thoughts: ... That's a lot of that shade of blue. My favorite cover for this series is still the original one with the flower. The one they replaced it with is HILARIOUS, though. I hadn't looked at it up close until now. That girls is trying to make out with the photo of a guy on a negative. LOL. This one's just...too much of this color. That's all I can say.

Renegade (Ripper #2) - Amy Carol Reeves
Thoughts: This one is WAY better than the Ripper cover. It looks a bit less ridiculous. However, I don't think the face in the clouds is doing it any favors. Ditto vaguely phallic stones. On the other hand (pun!), I do love her glove.

 Red Dawn (Crossroads Academy #2) - J. J. Bonds
Thoughts: What makes these covers extra interesting is that they were designed by the blogger Parajunkee! I do really think she's done a good job. I like the font of the title and the red ferny bits. I'm not a hundred percent sold on the red for the author name, but meh. This definitely can be compared without shame to the other mask covers out there. I'm a bit confused theme-wise by how these two books fit together, but that may make sense if you'd, you know, read the books.

Really? People are crazy for Bieber's cover reveal? I mean...it's just a picture. And not even a particularly hot one. But I guess we will have more readers, WOO HOO!

The Unloved: "oohhh, let me look at your fingers...I think you need a new manicure. I like purple nails better." I'm just bored with this one.

Rump: "Hm, what is this floating text doing here, let's just stare and observe it--maybe it will move or something. hmph, it isn't moving, I'm mad so I will cross my arms while you point at some distant location."
I love Rumpelstilskin (even though I think that story teaches the wrong morals: you don't need to keep promises if you are rich enough to hire people to figure out this old guy's name) though, and even more after watching Once Upon a Time.

I didn't even see the face in Renegade until you mentioned it--and it freaked the heck outta me. I was like, "what face in the clouds??...oh, oh, OH THAT FACE! AHHHHH! AHHHHH!" It's like that tree that Pocahontas talks to! What is this book about? God?

Dead River: omg, the hands are hilarious! It's lie there's this ghostly portal in the river.

I'm okay with True's over, not exceptional, but it'll do. I loved the orchid cover of Elixir as well. As for the 2nd edition one, I just kept wondering if it was Hilary Duff on the cover (since I'm a fan of her). It looks a bit like her. I don't mind the blue, it's my favorite color~
I've read the first two, so I suppose I should finish the series. And the "making out with the photo" thing, it's very creepy. It's not even a horror novel and I swear that book gave me an heart attack with the whole picture thing.

I liked Glitch's cover, even if I don't plan soon to read the series since it's reviews haven't been too good. Sounds like just another generic, sci-fi "dystopian." The colors are less appealing, but I like what they did to the authors name--even if it overrides (my attempt at a pun) the title.

The Light Behind the Window: I agree, PRETTYYY!! I imagine Japan now.

I didn't like Defy's cover. I just though the lady looked like she was in her thrities, and her face was just awkward. The Incarnate/Asunder covers are just so gorgeous, I'm not sure if they can be beat. But despite their awesome covers, I'm not planning to read it since many seem bewildered by it (but I've also seen one person say it's their favorite reads of 2012.) Interesting concept though.

As much as I like Parajunkee's work, I don't care for The Crossroad Academy covers at all. The spacing in "Red" is bothering me. The vector garnishes work better in the second one than the first though (which looks like a messy jumble, and the effects on the author's name just screams "powerpoint presentation") And maybe I've seen way too many mask covers that I'm not amused.

Criminal: isn't it a bullet?

Days of Blood and Starlight/Daughter of Smoke and Bone UK covers remind me of what they did with Deborah Harkness's UK covers--absolutely BORING and generic.

Okay. Here we go...

Why is Beibs cut in half? Or more importantly why isn't he cut in half?

The Unloved is confusing. It's really bland. Also, long hair, don't care.

Chick on the cover of Fury's Kiss has fallen victim to high-waisted-but-not-high-enough pants. Sort of like mom-jeans but leather, apparently. I noticed this happened to a lot of callipygian girls in the 90s.

I definitely want to read those two middle grade novels. Their covers are perfect, and I have to say, titling Rump "Rump" was genius.

I'm going to skip ahead now to that Hilary Duff book and DIE LAUGHING. I hadn't looked closer at that cover and yes omg she is making out with a photo negative.

And finally, you had me laughing until I cried with the Ripper covers. OMGthat face in the sky is creepy and I'm sensing some sexual frustrations from the cover designer.

I am disappointed in the lack of hunky heroes on the covers this week. I needed a good dose of ridiculing to start the day.

Yeah, that makes more sense. What got me was how long and narrow it looks. That just didn't say bullet to me. What it looked most like to me was a key or...a knitting needle. And...that was just obviously wrong. My brain was not giving me anything.

July 26, 2012 at 8:00 AM

I don't think the pictures that bad, but I've also only seen like three pictures of Justin Bieber, and I think this is the first time I've seen him without the flippy hair, so yeah. *shrug*

Yeah. Not the most romantic pose ever. I still think it would be awesome for horror or something like that. There's so much thinly veiled menace and the lighting makes them look vaguely diseased.

Ha, pretty much. I don't know...I'm pretty sure that moral is exactly how society works. I tried to watch Once Upon a Time but gave up in episode two. Then everyone loved it and I'm wondering if I made a mistake, but it's too late, so whatever!

Renegade is the sequel to Ripper which is about Jack the Ripper. I haven't read it and don't plan to, because all the reviews I've seen have been meh to WHY. That face was a MISTAKE.

RIGHT? Ghost hands gonna getcha!

I did wonder if it was Hilary on the covers. Why pay a model when Hilary can just do double duty? I kind of wanted to read them, because I really liked Lizzie McGuire, but I heard they were atrociously awful.

I'm still going to read Glitch. That will determine if I read on. I was surprised how BAD the reviews have been.

I don't think it's set in Japan, but it's always good to imagine Japan. Looks like it's France.

I agree about Defy, and that's why I didn't like it put into words. The Incarnate cover I do like, but I actually hate the Asunder one. Wah wah. Again, I'll read book one and then decide. I'm totally okay giving up on a series after one book.

I can see that. The covers are good for indie/self-pubs. The first cover I don't like at all. It doesn't SAY anything to me. This one is better.

YEAH. Everyone knows but me. Gah!

Oooh, I haven't seen the UK covers for those. Oh wait, yes, I have, and they were boring and awful. Good call.

Bahahahaha. You just outsnarked me on the Biebs. Good job.

They are like mom jeans. That is exactly the problem. Like they're tight at her waist and loose at her thighs and make her butt look droopy. Does she even understand why people wear leather pants? I mean, maybe they look banging from the front, but, if so, why pose her that way?

I added both middle grade covers on Goodreads as soon as I saw the covers. Then I read the blurbs and was okay with my decisions. Yes, that title is the best. What kid will not want to read that book? I know I would. Everyone with an awesome, mature sense of humor's going to be like 'teehee, that book says Rump! Reading it!'

Right! She is. Oh Mr. Negative. You are the sexy. You kind of suck at making out, what with being 2D, but that CANNOT STOP OUR LOVE!

Hahahahaha. Poor sexually frustrated cover designer. Floating faces are pretty much never a good plan.

I'll try to find extra for you next week!

I actually like the rest of the Dead River cover, it's creepy and melancholy. If they hadn't bothered with the hands. Though, is that the river? Because it's not much of a river. It looks like a water-logged dirt road.

Destiny, Rewritten and The Light Behind the Window are this week's tops.

July 26, 2012 at 9:26 AM

As I said, the atmosphere for the cover is right. Except for the arms. I think it's the river? That would make sense to me. And there's dead in it, so...yeah? Not an awe-inspiring river, no.

Agreed. With Rump probably bringing up third. Then the shiny covers, because SHINY.

I really like the cover for The Unloved! It's too bad you don't:( I like how their arms and hands bridge together, it kind of fits the theme of the book.

Also I really like Criminal! It's so different from her other books. I read a post and she said she loves her new cover too:)

That's cool. I'm glad people are enjoying covers.

Criminal's cover is really cool. I do like it, and I agree with her that it fits the theme of her covers while also being wholly distinct. Very cool. Even if I am stupid and couldn't tell what was happening.

I watched Once Upon a Time online after all the craze.
Then I got tired halfway through and was like 'I don't have time for this business, I will just skip around" And then I just watched the finale. The idea that Emma was speaking to her parents, which were her age, was kinda awkward. Can you imagine a lady coming to your door and being like "I am the baby you didn't remember having or throwing into a closet 20+ years ago. But I'm your child."

I admire your tenacity with trying out new books, I mostly give up if I read enough awful reviews. I tend to get very snarky with weak, self-conscious female protagonists and stupid plot holes.

I thought Hilary's series was okay...but a lot of plot holes, laughable plot holes. If anything, just skip the first book and head off to the 2nd (the paranormal aspect was very interesting in that one.)
I can just sum up the first one easily for you:
Clea, a rich teen photographer with horses, goes traveling around the world with her friend. And her dad has been missing for years, assumed to be dead. And she's all gungho about solving the mystery, finding her dad all that fun stuff.
Then in the middle of it she finds this mysterious dude in her pictures. The scariest of it--when she takes a picture of her room--and he appears in her closet (thank God only in the picture, we wouldn't want a creepy Edward clone.)
And apparently they are destined soulmates, and he is immortal. And she's like "OOOO, I LOVE YOU TO BITS AND PIECES! NEVERMIND ABOUT SOLVING MY FATHER'S MYSTERY...The guy has been missing for years already, he can stay missing for another few years. I'm in love with my soulmate, lalalalala"
And somehow they end up in some hidden compartment in Shibuya with this 500-year old corpse, that looks super scary...but dies on her own anyway. Random? Very much so.
So basically in the middle of it, she forgot about saving/finding her dad and started moping her boyfriend. Or maybe she has ADHD, I don't know. Her dad isn't even mentioned in the second book. If her dad knew, he must be feeling verrryyy important right now.

The only thing I have to say about the covers this week is that Justin Bieber has to be one of the most beautiful young women (I refuse to accept a man can be that gorgeous) I have ever seen. I wish I had that bone structure. *sobs*

This was such a fun post!! Here's what I think.

I actually really like the cover of Unloved but I do agree that the dirty, tangled hair has to go.

I love the US covers of Suzanne Johnson's books way better, although I do like the cover of River Road, just not as much as the US cover.

I agree, the Defy cover and its sequel are terrible looking. Yuck. What is up with the girl's face on the original?

And the thing cutting through the words on Criminal? It's a bullet.

I think the cover of Dead River looks cheap as well. Those hands? LOLOL.

I love the Cover of Red Dawn. Well done, Parajunkee!

"Rump" and "Destiny Rewritten" look absolutely fantastic! I'm a huge fan of middlegrade books but I hardly see them featured. I've added those two to my wishlist now along with quite a few others that you mentioned.

Both covers of Rump and Destiny are so fun and magical. It's covers like these that really catch my attention and I've always been kind of a fan of middlegrade for their cover art (shallow of me, I know). But in general I've very rarely been let down by a middlegrade book with a good cover (unlike YA titles).

Anyway. All very wonderful!

Also, I agree with you on The Unloved. There is something off putting about it, and it has two reviews; one with 5 stars & the other with 1 star. No explanation either. Like, wtf?

The Biebs...lol!

My favorites this week are The Light Behind the Window and Criminal. I really like the former's colors and page composition, in addition to wondering what she's looking at, and the latter is just so simplistic and awesome. Oooh, I really dig Destiny, Rewritten, too!

I can't decide if I like The Slither of Hope cover or not. The colors are great and the model is super pretty, but I think the bright blob in the middle of the page is the thing that has me on the fence. Hmm...

Uhh...Shift...that girl has butterflies on her eyes. BUTTERFLIES! This is like a Halloween costume gone wrong!

Spoiler alert: that parent child thing happens in Shadow of Night. Yeah! You're going to love it, by which I mean HATE IT. Lol. Although that parts fairly well done, because it's extra super awkward, which I think it would be.

Well, most of the ones I'm definitely going to read anyway are dystopias. A personal challenge to myself until I get bored of them.

Yeah, I'm not surprised they're not awesome. Lol. OMG. That is hilarious. I am so not reading that. The dropped plot lines are awful. Also, that taking pictures part seriously reminds me of Saw and that is like super not cool. Don't be like Saw. Also, not romantic. I would be freaked out as hell, not feeling romantic!

The middle grade books do look super awesome. They're definitely the best of this week, and so far for the coming post too. They do some really cute, clever things.

Haha, that is pretty true. I think maybe because the MG book covers are more closely matched to the plot line? Anyway, I don't read too much MG yet, but I don't think I've had any epic disappointments so far.

Glad you found new books to watch for! I love when that happens!

I agree with all of that, although Slither of Hope has me. I cannot say no to the shinies.

The Light Behind the Window was definitely my second favorite, and I'm super excited for the book, because I really liked the other book I read by Riley. That's one where a lot of reviewers didn't like it but I thought it was made of awesome, so WHO KNOWS?

I didn't notice the hair the first time I saw the cover of The Unloved, but I totally see what you mean! Vidal Sassoon would be flipping in his grave!

I love the Lisa M. Basso covers - shiny rocks! Although 'slither' is a bit odd - I would have thought it should be 'sliver'...or maybe there is a hidden meaning!

Dead River - hmmm I do actually like the cover, except for that ghosty thing - honestly it probably would have looked better without it (no scaring me, Mr Monster).

Love Cover Snark!

Right? Weird title. On the plus side, it's not going to get confused with other books. Unique titles are good.

Ghosty thing totally is not performing the function it should be. It's supposed to sell the creepy atmosphere, but is totally undermining it. Oops!

Well then, another reason to shove Shadow of Night deeper in the depths of my bookcase!

I have an affinity for dystopias, so keep those reviews coming! I will eat them up like candy...especially the negative ones~

The guy-in-the-closet scared me more than a horror novel (perhaps I just wasn't expecting it.) The guy was supposed to be hot...but still. Apparently soulmates are supposed to popup in your pictures, that would make finding a date so much easier.

I didn't watch Saw since I'm allergic to scary movies. I will probably not sleep for a week after them. Which reminds me of the time I watched Child's Play as a kid...I threw all my Barbies out the door; and even that scared me since I was convinced they would come to life, open the door, and murder me in my sleep. I was a paranoid kid.
