Cover Snark (25)

Welcome to Cover Snark where you're always free to let your snark flag fly. This week I have a really awesome collection of covers for you, by which I mean of course that they are all imminently snarkable. Some of them are really just asking for it. Also, prepare yourself for the worst indie of the week, because it's definitely a candidate for the worst indie of ALL TIME.

As always, feel free to disagree with me! Covers are subjective, so let me know what you like, what you don't, and what made you spittake. Where possible, I've linked you to GR, so you can add books that you think look awesome.

Opal (Lux #3) - Jennifer L. Armentrout
Thoughts: These books may be the shiz, and that certainly seems to be the consensus, but the covers are awful. First off, the guy creeps me the hell out. Obsidian's the worst for that with the unbuttoned shirt and creepy stare. Onyx adds a wife beater to the picture, which really doesn't do him any favors. He's finally wearing some non-creepy clothing, but he's still got scary, shiny eyes and is carrying a girl who may or may not be drugged. Maybe she's not, but as a girl who likes her heroines strong, covers like this really turn me off.

Sharp (Mindspace Investigations #2) - Alex Hughes
Thoughts: Meh. Looks like urban fantasy for men. The city in the background is pretty cool, but it's really not doing anything for me.

The Star Dwellers (The Evolution Trilogy #2) - David Estes
Thoughts: For self pubs, these are pretty good, though I don't think this one is anywhere near as interesting as the first book's. I'm really not getting a dystopian feeling from it, though, so it's not really calling to readers; it looks more film noir to me.

A Witch Alone (Winter Trilogy #3) - Ruth Warburton
Thoughts: Is it just me or these covers getting worse as they go along? The color scheme of puke green and purple really isn't working for me at all. It also looks very poorly photoshopped. Also, why did they choose to make the ground in the background precisely the same color as her dress? UGHHHH.

Deadly Sting (Elemental Assassin #8) - Jennifer Estep
Thoughts: I like this cover. The red is an appealing shade, and the girl looks like a badass, even if her outfit does recall Tinkerbell's. However, it really doesn't seem to have anything to do with the other books in the series. Is this the beginning of a rebranding?

Just for Now (Sea Breeze #4) - Abbi Glines
Thoughts: Goodness, I hate these covers. The font and the whole future sorority girls and fraternity guys on spring break vibe. Not my thing. The only one of these I like at all is Because of Low, which doesn't look like the others. Also, While It Lasts makes me laugh forever, because guy in cowboy hat is sitting on a GIANT HAY BALL.

Hollywood Holiday (Red Carpet Series #2) - Sasha Summers
Thoughts: This sequel is brought to you by: THE UGLIEST BOUQUET EVER.

Beyond the Cell - Sara Tribble
Thoughts: I do like the colors, but the fonts are not working, especially since the title is a little bit hard to read. Ehhhh.

Pantomime - Laura Lam
Thoughts: Really, Strange Chemistry? Why did they release the picture before the finished cover? There's now no excitement in the final release, since the title and author treatment really hasn't added anything to the picture. I am disappoint. For some possible other covers, check out Cuddlebuggery where Kat Kennedy designed some alternatives...

Just One Day - Gayle Forman
Thoughts: New Gayle Forman! Yay! Cover = odd. Coffee-loving girl with overly enthusiastic watch likes to people watch in  blurry foreign squares.

Cinder (Death Collectors #2) - Jessica Sorensen
Thoughts: That girl glows. She doesn't need the light of that giant moon to see by. I actually rather like the title treatment, though I feel like I shouldn't.

Sirens (Faithful #3) - Janet Fox
Thoughts: Janet Fox has the prettiest covers! They fail at a series vibe entirely, but who cares when they're this pretty, right? This one has a 1920s vibe AND a fantastic background AND a fun title font. I will say, though, that the way the pearls are attached to her wrists like chains are both creepy and an excellent metaphor for the gilded cage of upper class life.

Losing It - Cora Carmack
Thoughts: I just thought this was stupid at first, but then I read the synopsis. A girl is sick of being a virgin, so she tries to have a one night stand, fails, and then he turns out to be her college theater professor. OH MY GOD. I am so creeped out. Does the guy on this cover look nearly old enough to be a professor? And the chain? Also, the way he's positioned as above and control and she's below and submissive? NO.

Dead Rise Shore - Sarah Ballance
Thoughts: From Here to Eternity meets zombies.

Fox Forever (Jenna Fox Chronicles #3) - Mary E. Pearson
Thoughts: Oooh, I like the way this combines the elements of the previous ones. Still not as good as Mila 2.0, but very nice.

The Rithmatist - Brandon Sanderson
Thoughts: Steampunk horse! Looks like a middle grade? I like it, but it doesn't seem all that new either.

Between - Karey Schafer

Thoughts: Is that a dragon in that ball? That's awesome! Also, she has some sort of tattoo type deal going on on her shoulder. Plus, red hair. Who doesn't love sassy gingers?

Awakening (Dark World #1) - Arden Ashling
Thoughts: What is that shirt she's wearing? It looks so wrinkly. Also, LOOK AT THEIR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. I do actually like the title font and the background, though.

If He Had Been With Me - Laura Nowlin
Thoughts: Sets the tone for a dark contemporary that will make you weep enough tears to make puddles like the one depicted.

Bruised - Sarah Skilton
Thoughts: NGL, this cover makes me giggle. However, the way the title font looks like blood splatter around the i's dot makes it look like she's just had her hand chopped off ala Luke Sky Walker.

In the Shadow of Blackbirds - Cat Winters
Thoughts: Is it just me or does this look like the family photo of some crazy aunt before she got sent to the insane asylum? The goggles are a nice touch. Seriously, though, this cover creeps me out.

Empty - K.M. Walton
1st Attempt vs. Redesign: Good job, designers. This is WAY better. Very simple and literal.

Worst Indie of the Week: Human Rights - S.L. Armstrong
Thoughts: Words: I don't have them.

Outstanding Cover of the Week:
Sirens by Janet Fox

1. Pepe (which is the name of the model from the covers) I've had the pleasure of meeting in real life and he's far from creepy ;) BUT there is SO MUCH wrong with the Opal cover, like her weird ass eyes! WHAT did they do there??

2. I can see my husband grabbing this just on the cover...

3. I actually like this one more than the first one, but I'm still not a big fan.

4. They ARE getting worse. And is her SKIN even slightly purple??

5. I like this cover style more than the rest of the series, but I like my series to match, and this one does not.

6. I really like the Because of Low cover, this one looks like a typical beach read. One thing you can say is that you can guess the genre by the cover...

7. WHO picks those as their wedding flowers?

8. I have no thoughts..

9. Kat's were better!

10. Wearing a GIGANTIC watch

11. Is it strange that I want some excuse to find a dress like that and wear it though?

12. Doesn't match the first two but it's awesome!

13. Not old enough, and just no.

14. The Rock Erotica?

15. I <3 it. I love the covers to this series and I love that they evolve from each other.

16. Wouldn't catch my eye.

17. My family would buy it on the dragon in the ball alone!

18. Shirt's supposed to be wrinkly, it's that material. Is that their sexy faces? Broody faces? Constipated faces??

19. <3 <3 <3 that is all

20. WHO broke that statue? :(

21. OMG YES! I get chills. It's the photo of the crazy great aunt no one speaks of that you find in the attic!

22. Yep, love it.

23. AHHHHHHHHHH.....HEEELLLLPPPP...MY EYES, THEY ARE BLEEEEDDDDIIINNGG!

It doesn't look like he has any human rights either. God that cover is creepy.
The eyes in the Lux series doesn't bother me because with reading the books I know his eyes glow green but they are both supposed to be like 16-17... those models don't look that young.

I’m so glad that I’m not the only person in the world that hates the covers for the Lux series. I mean, I get that the series is supposed to be OMGOMGOMG!!!!!, but it’s a huge FAIL in the cover department, as far as I’m concerned.

Sharp doesn’t infuriate me or anything. I have much respect for a book whose cover is not insultingly bad and advertises exactly what can be found in the pages. I usually just nod when I see the cover for UF, fantasy, or science fiction novels. You know what you’re getting for the most part.

Wow, I would not have guessed indie for The Evolution Trilogy… I say we give that cover artist a raise!

I have A Witch in Winter at home, and it’s cover is actually quite lovely when you’re holding it. I haven’t read it yet, so I haven’t gone out looking for the sequels. Boy are those bad covers! If I love the first book and buy the other two, they will be hiding in the back section of my shelving.

Deadly Sting has too much red for me. I do like the skanky outfit, though.

Skipping… Skipping…

Ooo! There has been Death Collectors cover improvement. I’m with you on the title treatment – they just need to fire the model.

Losing It’s cover is awful, and that’s as far as I’m going with that one. O.O

I could make a lot of jokes about the title and cover for Dead Rise Shore, but I’m not going there at work. (I deserve a cookie.)

Skipping…

I likey The Rithmatist! Very cool!

I would like Between’s cover a lot better if the model untucked her shirt. Girls with strange plagueish skin marks and pet dragons don’t tuck their tight shirts into their tight pants! Well, they don’t in my mind anyways, and that’s just how it is! :-D

Dear Awakening Cover Artist, What in the world possessed you to pick the duck face shot?! Make it STOP!

Skipping… Skipping…

In the Shadow of Blackbirds is cool, but I think I would’ve liked it to be a little more antiqued. Is that a word?

I think Mr. Human has the right to be Mr. Kitty’s bitch and is feeling very dirty about it afterward. That being said, I am going to have nightmares, and I wish I could take back ever seeing that. :-P

I'm with you on Opal's cover! My first thought was, "Damn it, Daemon, didn't anyone ever tell you it's wrong to drug people--especially your love interest? No, I don't care how they did it on Lux and whether or not it's a way of saying "I love you." You live on Earth now and that is NOT EFFING COOL here, m'kay?"

Something about Abbi Glines and her books leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I've never read them and I don't really want to; I've seen some very persuasive negative reviews. Hell, I had the bad taste in my mouth even before I saw those reviews.

I have to keep wiping away a bit of drool when I look at Sirens. It's my favorite cover out of all of these too!

I'm not sure I'm going to comment on all of them this week. There are a few that I think are acceptable, so yeah...

1. I hate these covers, but the third one is the worst by far. I think I made clear in the chat party how I feel about the girl's wonky eye.

3. I agree with you. Like the first one more but under normal circumstances, I usually am not a fan of covers like these. I like COLORS!

4. But not these colors. Holy bad combos. The only one that is decent is book one, but even in that one the girl just looks like she was photoshopped right on top of the cover. And the titles aren't great either but that's not cover related...

5. That better be a rebranding. It doesn't match at all! It's okay. But I actually like the old covers, so...

6. I don't know about these but they are overly girly for even me. And as for the author? I've heard awesome things and HORRIBLE things. I'm really afraid to read any of her work.

7. That bouquet is awful. I agree.

9. Meh. I actually kind of like this one. At least it's different!!

10. I actually really love this cover but I agree, what is with the watch?? It looks like a man's watch to me!

11.That's not a photo, that's a drawing. Right? RIGHT? God I hope so. That's awful.

12. I like it, but I am underwhelmed.

13. Okay. I actually think this one is kinda hot. Though I understand what you are saying, I think it just appears to me like they are having sex but split apart by the bar in the middle. Now I want to read this. *flustered* LOL

14. Yeah. I'm not sure there would be time to do the nasty on a beach in front of a lighthouse during a zombie invasion but that's just me. Not exactly sexy either.

17. That looks like dirt on her arm. I know it's not but still. Bad rendering, IMO. Though I do like the dragon in a ball.

18. It looks like a FACEBOOK mirror pose! What the hell!

20. This is MY personal favorite of the week. Though it's not my type of book, I really think this is a unique and eye-catching cover! The colors work for me too!

21. Are the goggles supposed to let us know that this is a steampunk book? LOLOL. I can't with this one. Funniest of the week.

23. OMG. Is that for real? Are they proud of that cover? Are you effing kidding me? That's just...speechless. Embarrassing.

My goal is to do them all!

I very much hate those JLA covers. I think Opal is the worst offender. First of all: that girl is way, way tiny. Second, I bristle at the idea of him carrying her. kdjfhjkf

The Alex Hughes covers are boring. Urban fantasy for men. It even sounds boring on the inside, too.

I definitely agree with you assessment of Star Dwellers. I would probably watch a movie that looked like that, but not read a (dystopia) book with that cover image. But for self-pubs it's great - I never would have guessed.

I was thinking the same thing about that girl's dress on A Witch Alone! From far away it just looks hide her head floating in the air. Did she steal a certain cloak from Harry?

I really like the Deadly Sting cover, and if all the rest of the books looked like that, I would have been more inclined to see what they were about a long time ago. But if I were a long-time fan I'd be pissed - it matches not.

I never would have guessed that all those Abby Glines books are a series. AT ALL. One has nothing to do with the other. And what's with the big old tumbleweed? That cover is too highly saturated with color to even want to blend it with the rest.

Is that a cactus in her bridal bouquet? And seriously? It's been two books and she still isn't done getting married?

Is Beyond the Cell is a self-pub? I feel like with a better designer choosing a much, much better font for the title, the cover could look great. But it's got a western gunslinger kind of font which throws me off of all the pretty colors.

The cover for Pantomime is just boring. I like Kat's better: If you have to mime, must you pant?

The Gayle Forman cover cracked me up! That girl has a pervy look on her face. Didn't whatserface from If I Stay like coffee a LOT, too? Am I crazy? There are other beverages, Gayle!

Another Jessica Sorensen cover I hate. At least they used the same model.

While I do love the cover for Sirens on so many levels, I really wish publishers would get it together and start making series actually look like series.

I think you might be looking a little too deeply at the Losing It cover. Being on the bottom does NOT mean being submissive at all. Although, he is the professor and she is a virgin, so more than likely she is shy, scared and submissive. What I do want you to look at is this: THE GUY'S NECK. He is looking directly down and his neck is stretched so weirdly and it seems like he's got a whole LOT of head left that wasn't included in the picture.

This was my reaction to Dead Rise Shore. Is that YA?

I'm still too traumatized by the fact that Jenna Fox sequels even exist, to comment on the covers. Whyyyyyy.

I think those are scales on the model's shoulder on Between. If there are dragons, I wish they could have come up with a better title. And also, if she is a dragon shape shifty thing, I feel like the red hair, red dragon deal has all ready been done by Sophie Jordan.

Awakening is just AWFUL. Her hand placement, her facial expression, the tired, old pose the two are doing. YAWN and LAUGH. But I really love the background, NGL.

I really didn't like the notion behind the title: If He Had Been With Me. It sounds like a whiny girl with no dignity crying over a guy who would rather be with someone else. Then I read the synopsis and now I really want to read it.

I really want to read In the Shadow of Blackbirds. I am seriously creeped out by that cover.

The new Empty cover would be perfect if not for the use of a tagline. Can we please stop it with the taglines? Please?

And finally, I will gloss over that last cover and pretend it didn't happen.

To me, Sting was the best of the spidery cover things, because I didn't like a lot of the cover fonts and stuff. But she looks not unlike a hooker.

Dead Rise Shore: lol is it just me or is her butt glowing?
Fox Forever: I like them, but it looks like part of her nose is coming off.
Between: I would like this, but tagline. Ew.
I actually do like Bruised. It took me a couple minutes to figure out what the thing being cut apart was, but yeah.
LOVE both covers for Empty, actually. Just that the second one is better.

XD... what IS that. seriously. Do the author/designers look at these and go: "Omfg, that was JUST what I was looking for for!" or "perfect! a work of art!"? Yes? No? I'm honestly curious.

Hey, I found you through the FNC's blog. Love this post, although I won't comment on all of the covers (Dead Rise Shore made me giggle, but most of them are just plain ugly). And totally agree that the new cover for K.M. Walton's EMPTY is miles above the original design. I'm happy for Kate (yes, she's a friend).

Human Rights is the perfect cover for what it is: Cheesy Gay Porn. It doesn't matter what you or I think of it, it is signeling to its audience what its contents are all about.

On a couple of your comments you noted that you didn't like a cover because it looked like it was of "x" genre. That would only be a valid complaint if the book signled the wrong genre.

1. Yeah, I've seen a couple pics of him not on the cover, and he's an attractive guy, but he skeezes me out on these. She does look horrifying too.

4. Her skin DOES have a purplish tent. WHY?

5. Yup, I agree with you. There's still a full front cover style under the front flap, so you still get a whole sassy lady.

6. True. I like some beachy covers, though. These are like the worst of beachy covers.

7. NO ONE.

8. Kat's so were!

11. Nope, it's a cool dress.

12. Nope, doesn't match, but I don't care.

13. That's what I'm saying.

14. BAHAHAHA, that The Rock. Lol.

15. I do like the covers, but I wish it had stayed a standalone.

17. I love the TINY DRAGON. ADORBS!

18. I think he's going broody, and she's going for sexy pout, but it's not a good combo.

19. Awww, glad you like it.

20. AND HOW?

21. Right? I think it's partly because of how hard she's gripping the chair.

23. Pretty much.

Out of all Abbi Glines books the only one that has a cover that interests me was Because of Low. The other covers look like cheesy romance novels, though While it Lasts looks just plain cheesy.

That bouquet is definitely one of the worst I've ever seen. Are there prickly leaves for a reason?

Losing It - that guy is so not old enough to be a professor, and that looks like an erotica cover. If' it's erotic it gets a pass, if not a huge fail.

The last cover is just... There are no words, so it's ok that you didn't have them either.

Yup. I'm still curious about the books, but the Lux covers are terrible.

Yeah, I don't have a big issue with the Sharp cover. It's sort of boring, but does what it needs to.

The Evolution Trilogy does look nice, even if not my style. Get them that raise!

Oh, I like the A Witch in Winter cover, but this latest is a hot mess.

*proffers cookie*

Yay! I think Rithmatist is cool too, but I don't have anything specific to say about it, haha.

OMG, Kayla, WHY IS HER SHIRT TUCKED IN?

QUACK!

Yeah, that would have been cool. Make it look like it's been through a fire. Maybe sepia tone?

3. Colors are great.

4. Nice transition. Those colors suck giraffe balls.

5. I like most of the old covers, but not quite all. I definitely don't think they need to be rebranded.

6. Oh no, is she an attacker?

9. I like Pantomime. I'm just annoyed by how the did the reveal.

10. I like it, too, but it bothers me when I can't tell what's happening.

11. I think it's a photo, but I can't promise.

13. Haha, see, now this is why Cover Snark is great. Even if I make fun of things, people still add them to the tbr. It's magic. :) We all have our own tastes and it's beautiful.

14. SAND EVERYWHERE.

18. Hahahaha, it does look like a lame fb pose.

Agreed with you on all points. JLA was better with the flowers and colors. Actually, I agree with you on the first three.

HAHAHA, I love that you couldn't find her dress. Making the background the same cover was a questionable decision.

Hmm, so they maybe redesigned for you?

I didn't think they were a series, either, but that's what GR said. Maybe linking them to get people to buy more if they like one? I don't know. Or maybe same universe?

Getting married properly takes time. I plan on having a three month wedding. Expensive, but will surely set us up for good luck.

It is a self pub, and the font should be reworked for sure.

Kat's are fantastic. She should design covers for reals.

I don't remember if she was obsessed with coffee. Seems like everyone I know is. I rather like her expression. She looks like a shit-stirrer.

Are these direct series books? I sort of thought they were more indirectly linked, but I may have made it up.

He does have a bit of a lizard neck.

Nope. It's not, I don't think.

The sequels make me sad too.

The title does not help matters, no. ORIGINAL TITLES, PLEASE!

Yay for the background. Her hand placement is awful. Is she pregnant?

Agreed on the title, but I want to read it too.

Oh man, at least it's a sneaky tagline?

I am not in the market to be a professional cover critiquer. My opinions ARE valid, because I am stating what I think about it's aesthetic according to me, not for everyone.

I do believe it's erotic, haha. Or chick lit. I don't know for sure.

:-p

No, she's not an attacker. I just find that usually I'm not a fan of indie authors that everyone fangirls over. Usually I am underwhelmed so I am hesitant to read her books.

How did they reveal the cover of Pantomime that you didn't like? I read what you put in the post but I still don't understand completely.

Oh my. That last one. O.O I was not ready! I agree with you about Obsidian's cover. I never liked that one. Onyx is actually my favorite out of the three, but I like Opal's too. And the eyes thing is important to the plot!

I'll have to come back for more of this feature.

This week is probably the best! I agree with them all. I think that the Lux series does have some serious issues with the covers, even though I do love them. I thought the last book in the Elemental Assassins series was a big WTF! That last book was just... you are right there are no words.

I agree with you. I haven't been a fan of Armentrout's covers at all. Of course, that's not her fault in any way. And I've heard excellent things about the series. But I think that's why I've been wary to pick them up (the major hype and the awful, kind of creepy/bad covers). Lol. I do plan to get around to them soon though. She's awesome. :)

My favorite covers from this batch: Sirens, Fox Forever, and Between (but I hate the tagline--love the dragon!). I want to read them all now. They look so good! ^^

Erm.. Human Rights... WTF is that shiz?? O_O Yeah, I have no words either.

Totally agree about SIRENS being the best. It's gorgeous! Love, love, love! And yeah, I agree about the Jen Armentrout covers. Poor girl has yet to get a really good cover, even though her books are awesome. It's funny you say that the cover model on book #3 looks weak (the girl) because I'd say Katy is one of the stronger female MCs I've seen in paranormal romance. She's not just snarky (as many of them are) but she's also pretty independent. You should try reading the books! They're crazy funny :)

Hahaha, No one can be ready for that last one.

Onyx is the best one of the three for sure. He's not being a creeper around her arm. I figured his eyes were important, but they still scare me.

Is that the last one in the Elemental Assassins? Why change now? WEIRD.

I agree with you completely on all counts.

I've heard Katy's really powerful, but that makes the covers rather worse for me. Why depict her that way when she could be kicking ass? Sigh. I do really want to read them, though, but I don't get much time for non-review book reading.

Hahaha! I thought the same thing before I read the book. I was all, "Geez, why is he looking at me like that???" *bites lip* HA!

Yep it's me, the one that's always late to comment!

The Lux guy always freaks me out - I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thinks that (I was always too scared to say it in case I got lynched).

Sharp and Clean just remind me of Sci-Fi TV episodes. The shows I never watched because I'm just too cool (ha!)

I really like the covers of the Star Dwellers books, but agree that book 2 needs more.

Winter Trilogy are just *bleuggggggggggggghhhhhh* and I'd shudder to put them on my shelves.

I've never read Abbi Glines but from what I understand the covers appear to the fit the stories, which is a good start.

Bouquet for Brides you despise?

I actually quite like Beyond the Cell because it screams creeeeeeeeeeeeppppyyyy.

Don't like girls in masks. Almost as much as I don't like faces (almost).

I'll bet my firstborn (which I don't have, but that's beside the point), that the Gayle Forman will have a radical cover change very soon.

Death Collectors - I just peed my pants. And not with laughter.

Faithful are all pretty covers, but you're right - nothing ties them together

Scrolling right past Losing It - see ya!

Dead Rise Shore - zombie porn. Just, no.

Jenna Fox - big tick!

creepy, wierd, hate, odd, ok, good (not in that order, I just ran out of smart-arse comments).

*spits tea all over keyboard*

The End.

Nope, you're not alone. All of us creeped out by the Lux covers have gathered here.

We do know how you love your creepy covers. Creepy or historical fiction. ;)

Masks have been overdone, I agree.

Haha, I would so be willing to bet my firstborn on like anything, since I don't want kids.

Poor keyboard.
