On Comments and "Great Reviews"

Friendly friends, I'm not going to lie to you; in fact, I endeavor never to lie to you, even when I have to tell hard truths. I unashamedly love comments. When I wake up and check my email and have a bunch of comments, I am ecstatic. A thoughtful comment is approbation. It tells me that not only did you read my post, but it in turn inspired thoughts in you. This is the start to a discussion and I LOVE bookish discussions, because, hello, book blogger. Comments can be such positive affirmation that I do not suck at what I'm doing.

This is how comments make me feel.

However, I'll admit that there are some comments that I would rather not see. All of the bloggers in the audience can surely relate to this. Some comments seem like empty gratification, intended to blind you to the fact that they didn't read your post with flattery. I regularly get comments that say "great review" or "thanks for the post," but that don't say anything else. While I'm sure it's not always the case, such comments often feel like an inducement to get me to comment back on that person's blog.

Here's the thing: I don't think I ever need to hear great review from anyone. If you have a meaningful response to my post, whether it be on my blog, on Twitter, or on your own blog through a discussion post inspired by and linked to mine, I can tell that you actually appreciated what I was doing. Without any thoughts to back it up, the "great review" comments look like a nicer way of saying tl;dr. Of course, some of this is my fault, because most of the comments like this are giveaway entries, which, by the way, will not count.

Edit: For clarity's sake, I'm speaking to comments that consist of those couple word comments that say nothing but "great review" or something similar, or the ones that accuse you of not liking a book you gave 3+ stars to. Adding "great review" to reflections on the review is totally legit. :)

Comments don't have to be essays to be meaningful, but they should be reflective and suggest that you've read at least some of the review, and considered it. Heck, I even like getting comments saying that the reader only looked at the rating because the book's at the top of their pile and they're excited or concerned. I get that. I've had brief comments that were thoughtful, just a short sentence. It is possible to be brief but still indicate that you really did read the post.

Personally, as a commenter on other people's blogs, I try to comment only when I have something to say, usually something either terribly weird, wordy or both together. Almost never do I use the phrase "great review." I guess I would need to ask some of the blogs I comment on the most to see how they feel about my comments and whether the lack of a specific complimentary phrase leads them to believe I think their reviews suck and I comment for RTs or something, but I doubt it. I think that taking the time to actually respond to a long post shows your interest in the subject matter. I personally try only to say that a review or post is great when I have been just completely blown away by its awesomeness.

Posts that make me go like this, basically.

If you've commented with a "great review" on my blog, don't feel bad. Now that I'm coming to the end of my rant, I'm not entirely sure where to go from here. I don't want to tell you that my way is the right way. I still will appreciate the fact that you took the time to comment on my blog, even if you did it for a comment in return. Just know that I personally, unless I'm really bored that day, only return comments on meme posts, because that's the deal, and to ones that are incredibly thoughtful. If someone comments with a standard response, I would only feel like putting that much effort into returning the comment, and I would rather not comment at all if I can't leave something funny and thoughtful.

Other bloggers, how do you feel about comments on your blog? Readers, what are your commenting strategies? Thoughts, anyone?

I'm so glad you wrote this post, because so often I feel like I'm doing the whole commenting thing wrong. I just don't comment that often, because a lot of time I don't have something to say unless I've read the book/books in question. I hate making "great review" comments because to me that feels like writing "have a great summer" in someone's yearbook. You know? So I wait until I have something constructive to say, like now. (At least I hope it's constructive!)

That is such a good comparison. I was totally that kid whose yearbook said "HAGS" over and over, because no one knew me well enough to say much of anything else.

This comment is constructive, and I know any others you've left here have been. I try not to comment unless I have sometime substantive to say, even if it's just an off-the-wall reflection that I know will make the blogger snort. Jenni and Giselle get a lot of those.

Great post! Yes, I did actually just say that ;P. But I think it's okay because I read your ENTIRE post, and completely agree with everything you said. I am a fellow blogger, and I too think people just go to a post, don't read anything, and post a comment with a link to their blog that says absolutely nothing about the post. I only comment on posts if I feel like I have something to say. I usually only read reviews of books I've read, and if the reviewer has the same opinion as me, I say so. Now, I will admit, I DO leave a link to my blog when I comment, but I feel like that is okay for me because I try and write a medium, meaningful comment, because I don't think it would reflect on my blog very well if I pulled a one-liner. I think it looks bad when someone has one line of writing and then their link, and I don't usually comment on their blog in return.
I'm really glad someone finally wrote a post like this because, honestly, it really needed to be said. If we, as bloggers, work hard to read and review a book, or put any other kind of post together, we would like people to actually read our work, and not leave a short comment. Once again, I will say great post :P

(This is the part when I usually leave a link to my blog, but I don't think I'm gonna do that this time...)

I'm guilty of not always commenting on what I read either. I want to be witty and insightful, and I agree "great review" just doesn't do it. So as a reader, if I can't come up with something that would lead to a discussion I don't leave anything at all.

On the flip side though, as a blogger I get all disappointed when something I spent a lot of time on gets no comments. It feels like a swift kick in the shin. Sometimes I feel like I would rather have a blanket comment than none at all. It's a catch 22 I guess.

I like this post, I'm always excited when a blogger puts up a post which can spawn a productive discussion. I admit, I like comments as much as the next person. Its so exciting to know when someone actually reads my posts. I LOVE comments which make me feel like my post had content which interested someone enough for them to read it all the way through. Its difficult to make meaningful comments, it takes time. I believe its best to only comment when you really have something useful/constructive to say about the post. That way its a lot easier to speak your mind.

I guess my favorite kind of blogs are the ones where I post a meaningful comment and the blogger posts a meaningful response. Those are the kind of blogs I tend to revisit. I don't really like making a meaningful comment and then never getting any type of acknowledgment. I sort of get the "why bother" sort of attitude.

You know, as someone who doesn't get a lot of comments on her blog, I do appreciate something as simple as a "great review." I'm not a very discussion-y person but I do like to take note of the blogs I read regularly and let those people know that hey, I read and appreciate their posts even if I don't necessarily have something enlightening or praiseworthy or controversial to add other than "great review." Now, I don't generally limit myself to simply "great review" and then sign off but that's pretty much the gist of it and it simply comes from feeling like I should at least occasionally be a little bit more than a lurker on my favorite blogs.

As a blogger, you pretty much summed up how I feel about the subject exactly. And when I read comments on my blog, or any blog, I like to see that there's a discussion, nothing makes me happier.

On the flip side as a reader, I'm guilty of leaving short comments that don't necessarily generate discussion. I don't comment a ton because I want to say something meaningful, but there are times when a post makes me think of a book in a new light or really makes me want to read it and I still can't think of something meaningful to say. Those are the times I resort to the that was a great post, thank you for drawing my attention to this book kind of thing. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm torn.

wow totally agree about comments and they actually read the review , but I also know that people are busy and some times all they can say is good review.

But I have noticed that those people who also write good review always have a link to their blog and they are finally commenting on the blog. I can be a don't care mood too about leaving comments on books I have read and there I can leave thoughtful comments.

I wish I commented more, I often find myself with nothing to say. So I don't comment at all. I'm guilty of using "great ___" in my comment, but I always follow up with WHY I think it's so great.

I've gotten some really strange comments that sounded sort of like the beginning of a spam message, but turned out to be an actual person actually commenting. Like "Useful" or "I'll think about this." What? What? I don't get it.

I love getting comments too. It's awesome seeing a nice thoughtful comment on your review that lets you know that someone actually read what you wrote and took the time to say something back. This was especially gratifying way back when I was a newbie blogger.

I've pretty lucky that most of my comments haven't involved a one sentence like "great review". If people do leave a comment like that, I don't bother responding back. Otherwise, I will comment back ... even if it is days later :)

Hahaha, nice! But you didn't JUST say that, so I'll let it slide. ;)

Yeah, I typically read reviews of books I've read or books I have no intention of reading or books I've not heard of, in hopes that they'll convince me.

General rule is not to leave a link, except one of those as a signature that just links to rour blog, unless you've left a really thoughtful comment. I don't really know. I almost never leave links, even on WoW posts. I am too lazy.

I know a ton of people read and don't comment. I guess I would rather the person save the time they were going to spend writing a comment reading some of the review if they hadn't actually read any.

I can find your blog through your Google ID. I'll stop by tomorrow. :)

Very true. I find it's easier to comment on blogs I'm really familiar with too, because I know what sorts of jokes would be appreciated, so it's a little easier to make a quick joke comment and move along, knowing it will bring a smile, even if it's not full of meaning.

Truth. I love comments, but I don't know. It makes me sad when I can't respond to them. If all I can say is "Thanks" or "Yes" in response to a comment, I don't bother.

Comments can make a day brighter. I really love discovering that someone read my post. It gives me a little thrill. Someone thought it was worth their time to read my post; it's amazing.

I actually do go back and check on some of the comments that I leave on other blogs. If I leave meaningful comments, I like to go back and check occasionally to see if the blogger responds to my comment or the comments of others. If they never do, I might keep reading, but I don't bother commenting, because it's a vacuum.

Good to know. I'm not trying to speak for everyone by any means, and they can be nice to see, especially if that post hasn't been getting much love and you feel really good about it. I suppose what I was thinking was that we might get more creative with our praise or something. Transitioning from lurking is tough, and I think leaving quality comments is as much, or more, work than review writing.

February 11, 2013 at 8:12 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Oh man, what's better than when someone actually returns to continue a discussion in the comments? I know it's not especially easy on blogger, so I am always so moved by that.

Hmm, well, if a post convinces me to read a book that wasn't on my radar before, I usually get a little thrill. I think that is a little bit more personal, and if you added in a brief reference as to why, it would be pretty quick and easy to make a sentence about why they made you want to read the book. I'm pretty sure most of us love to hear that our posts will make someone give a book a chance. I'm not saying "Great review" doesn't have it's place, but I want it to be used only when it was a review the reader loved and wants to praise, you know?

Ahaha, I'm ashamed, Christina! :))) I usually end up my comment with "great review" but I don't just say that! (I hope) I don't, right?
I have two points to deliver. First, I don't mind any comments apart from spam because I understand why people do that. Imagine you have 200 posts to go through each day on your Google Reader and limited amount of time to do them. What do you do? You skim through the posts and only comment on something that caught your eye. Now imagine you know few bloggers that comment on your reviews religiously. You want to pay them back but the books they read are not to your taste. What do you do? Leave a generic comment. It's fast, vague and you don't feel guilty anymore. A lot of people do that and it creates a vicious circle because then that blogger has to go to their blog and try to comment at something they might not read too... :) Fun and games all the way!
Second point: some people are just shy, and not good at commenting, some are foreigners who are afraid to say something wrong. So, yeah it happens, but I personally don't get annoyed. I find it amusing.
Anyway, I have to remember not to end up my comment on your blog with anything "great" anymore :D It will be fab!

Bekka, if someone comments like that it's spam. I've seen plenty of random comments before when I wrote for a commercial blog. They are spammed like mad. On Blogger it rarely happens though.

Blogger Christina said...

True, but if they're that busy, I guess it's a bit odd they're reading blog posts and taking the time to comment at all. I'd probably just scroll through Google Reader.

February 11, 2013 at 8:22 PM
Blogger Christina said...

That's totally fine. If people say great review and explain it, I think that's legit.

Blogger does get the occasional real comment looking spam, but I've also gotten some really mind-boggling comments by real people.

February 11, 2013 at 8:24 PM
Blogger Christina said...

Oh yes, I so rarely got comments back when I first started, and for over a year afterward that it was like magic. A Hallelujah chorus would break out every time.

Yup. I had to make that policy. I get a fair number of one sentence, personality-less reviews because of giveaways, so it gets a bit old. At least read a sentence and respond to that!

February 11, 2013 at 8:26 PM
Blogger Christina said...

You don't! You usually mention Percy too. There's nothing wrong with complimenting the review. I'm speaking specifically to the instances where people just leave those two words. Not especially convincing for the most part, unless you already discussed it somewhere else.

Spam is dumb. It's the freaking worst.

I don't know. I see that, and I did that for a while, but I just can't anymore. I feel more guilty when I leave a bullshitted comment on someone's post than when I don't comment back. I really like to be honest and telling someone that their post I haven't read is awesome makes me feel like a jerk. I do try to comment back with people who comment, but if they haven't posted anything I feel like I can respond to, I don't.

Awww, well, second language is another issue. Usually they're perfectly comprehensible when they do say more though.

Bahaha. I can see it now. You're going to end them all with: "shitty review, as usual." lol!

I love comments, but like you I love them even more when they are substantive. I often do include the words "great review" or "thanks for the post", but I try to say more than just that. I only leave comments when I have something I actually want to say. I read waaay more posts than I comment on in any given day. I do try to comment on the blogs of people who comment on mine but I don't always because sometimes I have nothing I want to say.

So basically...what you said. Great post! ;-)

This is very true, though, admittedly, I have commented on other blogs with "Great Review" or "thank you!" as well. Sometimes I'm not sure what else to say and leaving it at what I had somehow feels... inadequate? Although maybe ending a comment on an empty platitude like that isn't always the best either--I suppose it really does depend on the post...

"Personally, as a commenter on other people's blogs, I try to comment only when I have something to say, usually something either terribly weird, wordy or both together." I agree on principle with this. Now, though, I am trying to comment on every post I read--trying to find something meaningful to say every time. Whether I'm successful with that is another matter entirely.

Don't really think I have a commenting strategy except in trying to relate to the post in some way...

I do know what you mean, though, about there being empty comments. There's one commenter who makes me wonder if the person is a spam bot... it's the same "Thank you" or "great post" type of comment, except with like 5 different posts. Have you kept those comments on your blog, or have you deleted them? What is your policy about deleting comments?

February 11, 2013 at 9:04 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the most "meaningless" comments I leave are ones to the effect of, "I've been looking forward to this book. Thanks for the review." Because if I haven't read the book, I don't always have much to say, but I do occasionally like to let bloggers know, at least, that I stopped by. Just so no one feels as if they're talking to the air.

So, in general I would say I leave the most "meaningless" comments on blogs I haven't commented on in awhile, and I want to say SOMETHING so the bloggers know I am still reading!

I am one of those people who regularly leave "Great review" or "Thanks for the post/review" and even "Been looking forward/can't wait to read this" (as mentioned by pagesunbound above) on my comments. I probably left quite a lot of those here... >.>

Those posts are ones I did read and really think their review is good. I do try to leave something meaningful with the "Good review!" but sometimes I don't have anything constructive to say but I want them to know someone's read their post.

I was just having a discussion the other day with a blogger friend about how commenting on lots of blogs is the most burdensome part of blogging for us. Or at least the most time consuming. But I think it's because I love comments so much and like you, I get so happy when I have lots of notifications in my email inbox. I think I assume that people who write comments like "great review" or "thanks for the review" just wanted to be nice and comment back or just let us know she read the post. (except for giveaways, I am always skeptical if anyone reads any of those posts) I try to leave thoughtful comments and I can usually think of something to say, even if it is just random jokes that have nothing substantive in them. Really, though, many times a lot of bloggers (me included!) read a lot of the same books so I often end up saying something like, "I'm so happy you loved this as much as I did!/I hated this one as well" or something generic. Of course I try to add something else in that's more personal. I think I would be pretty happy if people just left me Parks & Rec quotations instead of meaningful comments:)

I try not to leave two word comments like that...even for giveaway entries. I get rebellious with giveaway entries though "hmph, I'll comment when I want to, you don't have to bribe me."

I find it is easier to comment on a review for a book I've read (but then again, I rarely read full reviews on a book I've have yet to read.) Or perhaps an author I've read...so I have something to say. And hopefully I can start a discussion or a friendly chat that way.

Usually I'm just too lazy to comment. lalalalalala.

I personally only comment on posts I'm interested in, and I believe saying "good review" or "awesome review" because I find nothing wrong with that, it is a compliment, however ONLY if that isn't the only thing in the comment. However that could mean the person didn't read the post or that is the only thing the person could contribute to and I personally would prefer such a comment rather than no comment at all. As for the commenting back. I always comment back to people who comment on my blog because thats the whole point, to grow friendships in the blogosphere.

I admit to saying "great review", "great post", or "thanks for sharing the post" pretty often in my comments--but that's usually AFTER I've said my piece. Haha. I have a bad habit as it is when it comes to commenting on blogs. (In other words, I don't comment as often as I should/would like, and I'm trying to work on this...really, I am.)
I'm usually just a lurker. I always feel like by the time it gets around to my turn to comment, everyone before me has basically said the same thing I've thought and the owner of the blog probably wouldn't care about it by that point anyway. :/

I don't get many comments at my little space of the web. When I do, I'm usually lucky to get some more well-thought out ones, readers that I know read my posts, and that makes me feel good. I admit though that I'm also pretty bad about replying to comments there most of the time as well. By the time I remember to respond, I end up not bothering because I'm sure the person hasn't come back to the post to check anymore... So instead, I visit their blog as soon as I can and comment on something of theirs. Which really isn't a problem. But I know I need to work on my own commenting and I'm trying. :)

The only time I might have a problem with getting the slightly aggravating "great post, come check out my blog now?" comments are when I'm participating in memes like TTT and FF.

A little note: I'm always dropping by and reading/lurking--even if I'm not always commenting. *hides in the shadows* :)

The gifs are awesome as always, btw. Especially love Sally.

Well, I think it's fine to include a compliment like that at the beginning or end of your comment. The important thing is to react to something within the post to show that you were actually engaged with it and aren't just expecting me to come give traffic to your blog for taking the time to type 9 letters on mine. Not that I think you would do that AT ALL. I'm just speaking generally.

I try really hard, and depending on how motivated I am that day, it can be a real struggle. I'm getting a bit more selective and being more open to scrolling back through their blog history to find a book I've actually read to comment on.

Yeah, I have a couple of those commenters who never leave more than say five words at a time. I guess it's nice to let me know you were there rather than lurking, but it's weird. I don't delete comments unless they're spam. I would delete trolling ones too, maybe, but only after screencapping, and, thankfully, that's never happened to me before.

I get some of those. It is nice to let people know someone's seeing. I guess it might depend some on how many comments there already are? If my post I'd worked hard on didn't have any comments, I would be happy to hear something, anything. But if there's already a substantive discussion, a two-word comments seems out of place. Not sure on that, but maybe.

Awww, well, from that perspective, it's very nice.

Yeah, I see that that can be a hardship. Usually if I take the time to read through it, I can find something to respond to, but there are days where I just can't.

Oh yeah, commenting takes hours to do thoroughly, and I'm like...I could have read a book with that time. But it can also be really rewarding, because you can build new friendships.

Yes, when I get a new comment in my email, I'm like AWWW YEAH, especially when I see the name and I know they always leave thoughtful, funny comments.

I'm thinking I'll get rid of the giveaway entry review commenting option, because there's usually only one or two who actually leave a valid comment,s o why bother.

There's nothing wrong with "I'm glad you loved this as much as I did." in my book. That's solidarity and a sign that we have similar tastes. Totally fine with me.

PARKS AND REC! I respond to most people on Twitter, because rarely do people check back on blogger, since the subscribe option if flawed.

That was not a good time for hair.

Precisely. Part of a comment, cool. All alone, good review doesn't seem to mean much of anything. As part of a comment, it comes across as a real compliment.

That's why I do comment back in response to thoughtful comments, but if I feel like they're merely fishing for blog traffic by leaving a comment without reading even a sentence of my post, I don't reward that.

February 12, 2013 at 9:55 AM
Blogger Christina said...

Pretty much everyone who's commented so far admits to saying that as part of their post. Look at pretty much any blog's comments and you'll see that in about half the comments. But, seriously, doesn't bother me as long as there is other content. Standing alone they're like a house made of straw, easily torn down.

Commenting is hard. I don't blame you. I go through periods of time where I don't do almost any commenting. Lurking is fun.

Most comments do make me feel good. I think shutting down that option on giveaways will make me feel better about them again. Considering that it's optional, you would think lazy people wouldn't bother, but they sure do.

Oh, yeah. I don't like those on TTT and WoW, but it's the deal, so I go leave a half-assed comments. Though, to be fair, it's really hard to comment on WoW posts. Like REALLY hard, especially if the person doesn't even put comments about why they're excited.

I will. Hugging him is fun!

I am totally guilty of this...lol. In my defense, I often do it because I'm pressed for time but I still want to let the blogger know that I enjoyed their post. I don't do it with the expectation that they comment back on my blog, though I can see how it would be interpreted that way (and I'm sure some other people do it for that reason). However I do try to write at least ONE other sentence beyond just "great review" to show that I actually did read it! :)

As I've said in the comments, I think it's fine if you add something else to it. I just don't like the two words alone. Maybe I should add an edit.

That is NOT true. I go through phases where I get overwhelmed and I just don't bother. If you go to some reviews a couple weeks back, I never responded. I'm trying to stay on top of it!

This is awesome! So I do use the words "great review" a lot, but I always add a sentence or two after that, cause I'm like you I love seeing that I got comments, but then I get all sad when all I get is "great review."

In regards to meme's I realize they are what they are, but I have seen quite a lot of comments lately (not just on my blog, but others as well) that the person is just copy/pasting to drive traffic to their blog. Comments like "Great list. These are all my favorite too" or the one I've seen a gazillion times on WoW's "Sounds good. Adding it to my TBR." and these really irritate me. It only takes like 5 seconds to at least put the title of the book for WoW in the comment and maybe 30 seconds to say something about it. It doesn't have to be long or anything, but just an acknowledgment that you actually looked at the title (or list) would be nice. I don't enjoy copy/pasted comments.

Also, I second what Lenore said. I try really hard to respond to comments on my blog, but sometimes (like this week) I fail. You however, are awesome at it.

Exactly! I open my email and I'm like "A COMMENT!" and my eyes get all sparkly, but then I see it could be a comment on ANYTHING and I have to wipe a tear.

Oh yeah, I've seen/gotten some of those. It's not cool, but I still comment back, because that's pretty unavoidable with these things, and I'm going to be the bigger person. If they pop that on a non-meme post, though, I will happily ignore them.

Woo! I'm awesome except when I'm not. It's best if I respond as they come in. If I let them build up, I fail because they become too overwhelming.

Well you already know I love your comments so much and they are the best ever because I always have so much I want to say back!

I prefer more thoughtful ones because I truly DO like to start discussions..not just talk to myself! So those kind of comments allow me to do that. But I will say I don't mind if a friend says OMG I LOVED THIS TOO because i know they are busy/we will talk about it later on texts or email or Twitter. But the solo "great review" is really hard to reply to. I ultimately and thankful they read my review but wished I could have engaged them further I guess.

I try to bring out something I liked in the review, but I say great review a lot because that is just my way of letting people know I stopped by.

*pats self on back* I try to open the door to a dialog, even if it usually moves to Twitter because of how easy the notifications are.

Oh yeah, I sometimes do just go AHHH I LOVED THIS TOO and generally flail about how glad I am I don't have to judge them now. :) Yeah, I wish I believed that most of the ones that are just two words long actually read it, but I usually don't. Obviously if it comes from someone who regularly comments and usually says more, then I know that they were just busy, but if they continually stop by with two words, they get my skeptical face.

Great post.

...

Oh yeah! More to say ;-)
It drives me bonkers when I get a super brief, empty comment. Makes me wonder why they commented at all, except to try to get me to visit their blog. I hate leaving comments when I have nothing to say, which is why I comment so infrequently (also, because I'm crazy busy and can barely find time to blog, let alone comment). I 100% agree with you on this one, even though it might be too much for me to want people to actually be thoughtful and stuff.

OH! The other thing that gets me is when I post for It's Monday, and all the comment says is "All of your books are new to me. Come see what I'm reading at ..." I want to delete those, but like the wimp I am, I don't. But it feels like spam.

Totes agree! I seriously wonder if they really did read it. SIGH. Especially since, when I'm on my game..which is not often these days, I like to comment back with wonderful comments myself! :)

Ha ha ha... I can definitely relate to this. I've had my share of "great review, Faye!" and while I appreciate the short comments, I would've opted for a more... thoughtful remark. I want to have discussions, I want to talk and argue (intellectually) and debate over ideas, but a comment doesn't leave a lot of opportunities for that when the comment doesn't really say anything else...

Agreed. And while commenting back is nice, being forced to do it seems a bit sketchy to me. If someone leaves an awesome comment, I do want to check out what they do, but I'm not going to do that by default, you know?

Ugh. There are tons of those for WoW. Oy.

Precisely! At least if they put your name in there, it seems a bit more likely that they actually did read but didn't know what to say. Still, discussions are what it's all about!

First, you are the world's bet blog commenter. I love getting your comments.

Second, please try to make me laugh too. I love when you do it to Jenni and Giselle and I want some more, please??

Third, I completely agree with this post. I am fed up with meaningless comments and when I get them on my blog, I won't even go to that person's blog and reciprocate. It's no sweat off my back. If that's the type of comments they are going to leave, I'd rather not get them at all. For me, a lot of them are meme comments and if you can't say something meaningful, I won't comment back. Even if you are supposed to. Because that is some BULLLL SHITTTT. Thank you for posting about what I have always thought.

I'm the best blog commenter, but I need to comment differently? Lol. That says a lot about the calibre of blog commenting.

Yup. I'll only comment back if I'm inspired. That shouldn't be what commenting is about.

Great review!

Okay, bad joke. Anywho, this was a large part of why I quit book blogging, to be completely honest. My comment section was littered with comments that read "Great review! Follow back!". It was so discouraging. And a lot of the time, it felt like publishers didn't take me seriously because of people like that, ruining it for everyone else, attempting to boost their numbers for free books. I may be reading too far into that whole scenario, but truly, that's how it felt to me.

Oh wow. That's so sad that it made you quit. I just ignore those as much as I can, and I don't reward that behavior, figuring if I never comment back, they'll eventually ignore me or step up their comments.

KIDDING. I am just being an a-hole.

But for serious, I like super long meaningful comments as well. It's funny people always apologize to me for leaving long booklike comments on my posts and I am like no no I cherish THOSE ones the most -- like your comments. They are very cherished on Books And Wine. Like I legit smile when I open a comment in my inbox from you, because I am weird and creepy like that.

For me, sometimes I leave comments that are on the shorter side because I can't think of anything good to say that doesn't sound stupid or awkward or because I don't have much experience with the thing being reviewed -- like your review of the MASH guy's audiobook. Like I've never seen MASH and outside of my parents calling this crazy guy in town Klinger, I just don't have much knowledge of it. However, I am still going to write up a comment because I read the post and want you to know that I'm still listening even when I don't have much to say.

ALSO. I agree with Kara that you are one of the best commenters ever.

Also. I really want to switch to one of those commenting systems where you can leave images and GIFs in the comments --- I feel like that's an acceptable comment. Like, on goodreads when people leave GIFS on status updates, I am all yes I know exactly what you mean.

Blogger Christina said...

Lol. I saw that first comment come in and I laughed, assuming something else would follow, but this all too a while to type, so I was getting ready to sass you on Twitter. :-p

Yeah, people totally apologize for long comments. I do if I'm on the blog of someone I don't know or if I get REALLY insane, but I know I love getting them! They're also more fun to write than "Oh cool. Glad you liked it."

True, but even your shorter comments are substantive, like they include a clear reference to the post. Even if you drop a sentence on a book haul, you don't just go "nice haul," but comment on a specific book or two. You know?

Go me!

YESSSS. I love gifs. They're amazing.

For real, I love writing long comments if I have something to say or a good story that relates to the post. And speaking of that -- how much does it suck when you leave someone a long and awesome comment and you come back and NO RESPONSE? I'm like really? No response to that awesome story? FINE. Although I am also guilty of that too.

<3 GIFS FOREVA.

It super sucks. I know responding sometimes gets away from me or can take some time, but if I leave (what I think is) a really awesome comment, I'll check back several times on several posts, and if the blogger never responds, on their blog or on Twitter, I stop commenting. I don't comment to talk to myself, yanno?
